Random Commanders Thoughts

we overachieved last season nothing to indicate we would win the division coming off a 4 win season. We didn't regress we are right where we are supposed to be maybe a little ahead of schedule. There was games we should have lost but won early in the season.

I simply disagree, we were good enough to win 10 games this season...and should've. We may still have flaws, but we played the same weak schedule Dallass and could not take advantage of an easy FG to win on OT in London, a poor throw from Cousins as we were trying to put the 1st Dallass game away when a FG would have been plenty, a total collapse on defense giving Stafford 78 seconds to win the game with a TD, and losses we should have walked away with wins, i.e, the Panthers, Cards and Gnats games.

there was a couple of games we won that we could have lost also. You have to look at the big picture of things not just certain aspects. I think we played the 5th toughest schedule this year.

According to a little blurb in the WP, Callahan is not interested in the OC job.

Good! No feelings to hurt there, if true.

And, if true, and since there is no cap on staff, he should be given a big fat bonus check, just to say, "Thanks", and keep him happy here.

I read where Callahan is happy just coaching the OL. As OC would probably have to give this position up.

1 thing to keep in mind: if you're a wanted DC do you go to team w/coach in 4th yr who might end up on hot seat or w/1st yr. job security.

And to the contrary, our OC position must look really attractive. We seem to be churning out head coaches from that position, consistently. Our last 2 OC's have gone on to take their first HC job, now that Shan-man's hiring with SF appears imminent. So if Cavanaugh has any desire to become a HC, he must be giddy about the prospect of being the next Skins' OC.

In retrospect Redskins might've been far better served by firing Barry and Gruden and handing reigns over to McVay. That would have put us on far better position in a lot of ways. Secure HC who's not on the hot seat, much more attractive opportunity for OC and D.C. candidates and increased likelihood Cousins signs a workable long term deal. If the Redskins believe in Gruden and he's not really on the hot seat, I believe another option would e been to make that clear with an extension before letting Barry and McVay go.

If we lose Cousins and are unable to upgrade significantly at Vacant coaching spots, essentially this is a total do over which in which case holding on to a 4th year HC makes zero sense.

It's very difficult to see any kind of a coherent plan here.

And if they sign someone from one of the playoff teams who is considered to be good hire league, wide, all this hand wringing is for naught.

This is why I'm not freaking out. If the playoffs were done and all other vacancies were filled and this was the only one open, then I'd be worried. I don't know who is out there on the playoff teams or other teams, etc. But I'll only panic if the Redskins are the only one without a coordinator after all the dust settles. Or if they hire Rob Ryan.

We played the same teams the Cowboys did. Your "big picture" comment was rather insulting, too. I have looked at the big picture with this team for over 40 years. This team regressed, maybe not significantly, but they gave up against the Giants when they could have earned a playoff berth, where the year before they soundly beat a division foe to win the division in the last game of the season.

I agree with you El. I'm a big picture guy but not when it comes to football. This league is all about winning now, you select QB's in the draft and expect them to perform and play right away. There's no development like in the old days. Same with position players, its best to play them. They learn the scheme quicker than sitting on the bench. That's invaluable. You have to play with a sense of urgency from game one. We usually start slow and that's got to stop.

Boone got it right. There doesn't seem to be a cohesive plan. There's a little chaos there, but we liked it when Snyder stepped back. That was a huge positive. The promotion of Allen was a huge positive, but in that process we have learned Gruden gets the assistants and McClou the players. Well, we see those three guys, Allen, Gruden and McClou are not really on the same page. I read every post by Boone on coaches comments. And what stood out was a little fear and trepidation on how they all meet to make decisions. I never got a sense of confidence with our process. Then add to that Gruden confessing too many times that he didn't know why things weren't working. So while I saw huge positives in the front office processes, at a more micro level, there's still dysfunction. Somehow, they have got to get their act together and work toward the same goal. I haven't had that feeling yet. So I'm a little disenchanted with how we are going about building the team. Best player available doesn't cut it in that scenario. Targeting impact players to complete your scheme plans seems to achieve your goals and objectives better. All three of those front office guys have swung and missed imho.

It's crickets out of the park since McL came aboard for the most part. All of this is conjecture and panic because the team didn't immediately hire a replacement for Barry. I think I'll wait to see how this all settles out before pre-judging it an incoherent mess. It's more likely there is a desired outcome but they are also preparing in case it doesn't work out the way they want. Time will tell.

When Gibbs first came here all the players were selected by Beathard. Gibbs hired the assistant coaches. Basically same set up as now, except for Allen.

In reading about Gibbs hire the one thing he asked Cooke for was to let him get the best assistants and pay them well. Cooke agreed and rest is history.

Years later there were reports of a power struggle between Beathard and Gibbs. Eventually Beathard left.

The lack of a true GM (Cerrato will never fit in this category) hurt this franchise for years. It will take McCloughan a few years to turn around.

minus Sanfran and Tampa. Last year they beat Philly to win the division then soundly beat a Dallas team that didn't show up. NFC was weaker last year only 6 teams with a winning record this year it was stronger with 8 teams with a winning record

I still think the Redskins are interviewing DC candidates to stall until someone else they have their eye on in the playoffs is done.

The current crop of candidates to date does not include any real up and comers or proven top echelon guys.

Most have worked UNDER good coordinators, but how much does that count for?

If you are the 30 year old McVay it may be significant.

For these DC coordinators, most of whom are over 50, their own stints have been less successful than their original bosses'.

ESPN was reporting that Jim Tomsula would be considered for the DL coaching job.

But one would think a new coordinator would want to hire his own staff and not run with Manusky, Olivaddotti who are holdovers and another guy that was pre-selected by McCloughan.

The only other thought here is that if the Redskins are going to hire Manusky, then it would make sense to be lining up a DL coach and perhaps a secondary coach in Dennis Thurman.

Today's CSN article on Cousins potentially going to San Francisco if/when Shanahan is named HC.

There is no blue chip, can't miss quarterback prospect to draft for the 49ers and you aren't going to go into next year with Kaepernick and Gabbert as the candidates.

The more I look at this situation, the more I like the idea of putting the non-exclusive tag on Cousins and letting him negotiate with the 49ers if need be.

If Shanahan convinced the front office to trade that #2 overall pick and a #2 next year for Cousins I would have to seriously consider it.

Unfortunately for Kirk, the team took too long to figure out that Griffin was a bust and by the time he got on the field and started playing, we had to almost overnight go from paying him $1M a year to $19M a year.

We never really got those nice early, cheap years from him that Seattle got from Wilson or the Cowboys are set to get with Prescott.

As soon as Cousins proved he could play at the NFL level, he wanted to get paid immediately.

Nothing wrong with that from his perspective, but the thought of giving him $23M a year going forward to me is a risk.

Kirk is not an overwhelming athlete or passer. He is a good athlete who for whatever reason refuses to use his mobility to best effect during the season at critical times.

He is the classic case of a guy that was able to work and work to finally reach his true plateau.

But the guy we saw against Green Bay in the playoffs last year and against the Panthers and Giants at the close of 2016 is evidence that his 'best' still does not translate into a top 5-7 position.

Right now, it's an argument whether going forward you would want Wentz or even Prescott instead of Cousins.

You might come to the conclusion you want Cousins. But it's not a slam dunk.

And for $23M a year, if it were me I would want to be able to say 100% I want Kirk over any of those other players.

I just can't say it at that level of conviction.

If Kirk did get those early years.....

1: You think Skins fans would be patient enough to let him develop? I don't.

2: If he did take off like he has now, Mike Shanahan is still here,IMO. Alot of you wouldn't have liked that either.

If Shanahan had not had to draft RG3, and brought Wade Phillips in when Dallass dumped him, we'd be a lot better off. I am now convinced Shanahan was not the problem here. He created some of his own drama, but the problem was in the FO and behind center.

Shanahan's a total dick. I'd rather lose without than win with that douchbag. Sorry.
