Pointing out that McVay, before the ink dried on his contract, was able to land a DC that many say is top notch. While Gruden, in now the beginning of his 4th year, still hasn't found one, doesn't look so good on Gruden.

And, on top of finding a DC, we now have to find an OC. Even if it's nowhere near as important as DC.

And wondering how all this MIGHT affect things going forward....should be topics of conversation on a team loving message board.

I actually agree with 'doesn't look good'. But as you well know, conventional wisdom is as often wrong as it is right. Only time will tell.

Reminds me of the guy who walked into work, and the first person he saw asked, "Are you alright? You look bad."
He said, "Well, I feel good."

He then passed another coworker who asked, "Man, are you ok? You look bad."
Again he replied, "But I feel good."

He then walked up on his boss, who told him, "Good Lord you look bad."
"But I feel good", he said again.

So, starting to worry a little, the man went to his desk, got on his computer, and googled, "Look bad, feel good".

He was shocked to discover, that he was a vagina. ;)
 
Honestly don't think it matters who we hire as DC until we commit to upgrading the talent and depth on the DL. Wade could scheme something to make things better but not enough to better to truly matter, not with our talent level on that side of the ball.
 
I do find the whole situation worrying.

It's kinda a weird situation. We're lacking a DC because the Defense was so bad. Yet we're lacking an OC because our Offense was so good.

As much as I disagree with some of McVays calls we did at least have an Offense trending in the right direction. Depending who we get now we could see a drop off in our Offensive production.

While frankly on the other side of the ball... we couldn't get worse.

So... with an upgrade of talent on the D and a new Co-ordinator... we could push the defense up to maybe below average in year 1

While on Offense with a new OC and Garçon and/or DJax leaving we could slump back to just above average.

Which evens out at... average.

So another 8-8 type season.

Now I'd be ok with that if it's a STRONG 8-8 with a feeling that in 2018 we could make another step on both sides of the ball as we get more talent on D and settle in on O.

But I don't like the feeling that we're standing on a knife edge that could go either way.

These hirings and the upcoming draft are critical!!

I honestly think this team is not in a position to attract top line coaching talent until we prove that we're a good organisation. I feel like that is why we got Gruden in the first place.

The way the Shanahan years ended hurt our credibility to hire coaches severely. There was blame all around and it was a mess. The whole debacle was handled awfully. If I'd have been a top flight coach I wouldn't have come anywhere near this job. The way we took Barry when Wade was the better choice just compounded the problem.

That stench lingers and it's why we'll struggle to get top flight coaches who have a good track record here.

I think we need to prepare to be thoroughly underwhelmed by whoever we recruit. Lol

Knight we do have Cavanaugh and Callahan on board to be OC, plus Gruden could take over play calling duties. A few coaches do this. I believe with Cavanaugh and Callahan we may be a more run oriented offense, if they feel Fat Rob can be the guy.

You are right Gruden is on a slippery slope with these hires. Make 2 good hires and he gets contract extension. We fail and he is gone.

I'm personally hoping an internal promotion for the OC role so we can keep some continuity.

fans here would revolt at 8-8. Teams as dysfunctional as the redskins won't attract top coaching candidates till the talent improves. Which offensively it has. Defensively it hasn't but that will change over the years. Rome wasn't built overnight.

I don't know about cavenaughs past times as OC but Callahan has been knocked as 2 conservative afraid to have that killer instinct.

not now but in the past players with instant access to snyders office coaching carousels, no clear leadership. That has been rectified for the most part since 2014
 
Some buzz that Skins may be looking at Jim Tomsula (former 49ers coach).
 
So the Redskins are thinking of hiring Jim Tomsula, former 49ers HC, to be a position coach on defense.

Sure, after hiring the 0-16 DC, let's go this route.
 
He and Manusky worked on the same staff for years w/49ers...wonder if he is also in the mix? Why all the negativity BB?

I do actually think for the first time in a very long time we're not a dysfunctional franchise.

But I do think our track record in that respect is a short one and for employment purposes we're generally distrusted.

Will Blackmon pining for Gus Bradley

I played for Gus in Jacksonville and worked out for him when he was in Seattle. He's had the most recent success in terms of building solid defenses. Obviously, Coach Pettine had the defense with the Jets and did really well with them.

If I had a preference, I'd pick Gus. I already know what I'm going to get because I've seen it. I just know he brings a competitive atmosphere where the best guy is going to be on the field. He's going to challenge everybody, motivate everybody and inspire everybody. He's an uplifting person and I think you need that out of a coach. The biggest thing about him is he's genuine. He genuinely wants to see you succeed.

Some rumors that Lynn (new Chargers HC) is keeping defensive assistants (that may be a $$ decision imposed by owner?). That might make the job a lot less attractive to Gus Bradley. Skins may be a bigger player in the Bradley competition than we think?
 
That's a bit surprising given McVay had a first row seat to view Barry's skillsets.
