Well here we go, Defensive changes?

You guys may scoff at the idea but if I were in charge, I'd bring in Olivadotti and Lou Spanos for an interview,

Two guys who are well thought of as LB coaches who might surprise you.

Olivadotti worked under Marty here and Spanos comes from the LeBeau defense tree.

To be honest I think the Redskins still have that stink of a bad organisation on them.

The place has been pretty toxic for coaches in the past, and while I do think that's changed recently for the better, there must still be suspicion amongst the coaching community (especially the better coaches) about how stable we are, how much Snyder is going to interfere, whether we can put talent in place, what the media attention will be like here, the fan reaction etc. We're only a couple of years removed from the mess of the ShanaClan era and have yet to prove we're truly a professional organisation. We could very easily backslide really fast if this year turns out to be a disaster.

Snyder has a track record of spending the money required to get things done, but even with that I don't think we're a 'desired' coaching destination.

The Rams (for all their faults) offer, for starters, the LA Climate, a fanbase that is nowhere near as rabid as ours, a media that will split it's time now between them and the Chargers (and lets face it The Lakers are probably still the biggest sports team in town!). Any Coach there can fly a little under the radar (as much as anyone can in the NFL) especially while McVay will probably take any heat for a bad season (coach hired too young) and as has been mentioned, there is bound to be Coaching stability for at least a couple of years while McVay gets his shot.

Until we prove we're a GOOD organisation to work for, I tend to think we'll always be picking up the middle of the pack Coaches at best. The best ones will always have better options.

I wouldn't scoff at that at all. :)

For the reasons detailed above I think we'll struggle to get a top drawer DC.

It might be time to think outside the box.

I'd be ok with this.

Yep, there he goes.

No one wants to work for the inept fool we have as a head coach.

Get ready for a new HC and staff after 2017.

Honestly I never really thought/felt he would consider coming here.

It was nice to have him on our wish list, but I always though the actual chance of getting him was very low, even if we threw money at him.

To mimic Rich Tandler's $100 bet riff...

I'd have put $5 on Wade.

I'd have put $10 on Pettine

I'd have put $25 on Bradley

I'd have put $10 on something coming out of left field

I'd have pushed the remaining $50 on the rest of the field.

LOL

I'd go with BB here.

Coming in for what appears to be a "Dead Man Walking" head coach, is the most unattractive feature for established DC prospects.
Not the organization itself.

Speculation is also Bradley will go with Lynn to 49ers. Thing that sticks out is how quick these new coaches are naming their coordinators. Like with McVay it seemed he had a plan and is working it. Gruden is somewhere in la la land.

Also read an interesting perspective. If you are a hot DC commodity would you want to go to a team where HC is in 4th year and on hot seat or with a first year HC that has some degree of job security?

Correction...Lynn is in negotiations with the Chargers, not the 49ers.

Not sure it matters that much as long as you get the right contract.

Look at Chip Kelly.

I know he wasn't a co ordinator he was a HC, but he is now essentially being paid by both the Eagles and the 49ers for doing sod all this year. Still cashing them cheques for the next two years!

Any Co-ordinator that comes here would be wise to have the same kind of contract being as Gruden status could be shaky next year.

Wade Phillips was ready to come here in 2014 to be the DC and we didn't have demonstrably better talent on defense then, in fact it was worse.

What's the difference between then and now?

Beyond the McVay hiring, it is what folks are mentioning - namely, that while McCloughan has elevated the team from last place awful to competitive/playoff wildcard, there is a general consensus that Gruden is not doing an effective enough job to elevate this team to the next level, namely that of legitimate Super Bowl contender.

For a team that finished in last place so many times in the past decade, it is difficult to fire a coach that has at least helped to make the team respectable.

But with 9-7 and 8-7-1 records, Gruden is heading down the path of Norv Turner. Turner had the same records in 1996 and 1997 before going 6-10 in 1998.

Norv lasted here for 7 years because he was able to sprinkle in enough hope to go with disappointments to keep people saying they could see over the mountains to the Promised Land.

It never materialized. We were churning our wheels.

The same thing seems to be happening now.

The 'there's no talent on defense' argument in re Phillips once again IMO is plain BS.

If Gruden was fired and Andy Reid was hired to come to Washington when his contract expires to be the Head Coach, Phillips and the others would be interested in the DC job.

Because they would realize they had 5 years to build a defense from the ground up and would receive adequate support from the HC not only in free agency but also the draft.

When you have the 29th rated defense in the NFL and ignore the defense in free agency almost completely and use your #1 pick on a shiny toy at wide receiver who even if healthy was going to play a niche role in 2016 you show folks you aren't really serious about improving.

Well, I believe Phillips had zero interest in coming here now. After being told **** off 2 years ago.

I also still believe the biggest reason he was told to **** off was that Gruden didn't want a bigger name than his in the room.
His ego, then, may ultimately be the reason he fails here.

But, since it doesn't appear he's going anywhere this offseason, we should all hope that he...
a) Hires a DC that takes us to the middle of the pack, or better, this season...
b) Keeps the offense moving forward at the same time...
c) While developing, and properly using a respected running attack...

Do this, and a contract extension, will get he.

Do it not, and back to coordinating, it shall be.

This team is stuck in re decision-making because while we have moved on from the period where Dan Snyder was at the controls making football decisions with Vinny Cerrato, we are still in an uncomfortable configuration where Bruce Allen/Scot McCloughan/Jay Gruden/Dan Snyder ALL have some input on what happens and its really hard to move forward and gain consensus when there are that many votes in the room.

When Joe Gibbs and Bobby Beathard were winning Super Bowls here there was no Bruce Allen role.

Beathard ultimately determined who we took in the draft and HE was the one that went to Jack Kent Cooke to recommend Jack Pardee's dismissal after the 1980 season.

Right now, we don't know that McCloughan has anywhere near that kind of power or access.

Bruce Allen seems intent on retaining a say, and he is very cautious bordering on stagnant at times. He doesn't like change.

So, he sticks to hires that come from where he has been before, namely the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Nobody here seems creative enough to go outside the box and find their own Sean Payton or Mike Tomlin.

Jay Gruden comes off the Tampa tree, Joe Barry came off the Tampa tree.

While these coaches are 'new' to us when they come to Washington they are in fact 'retreads' for Bruce Allen.

The irony is when Allen was in Tampa the team was 4-5 years PAST that 2002 season when they won the Super Bowl and blew out the Raiders 48-21.

Fickle redskins fans would have wanted Sean gone after the second season and his third season.

Yea, I don't get it either.
He was the whipping boy all season long, due to his highly persecuted play-calling and refusing to run the ball, calling the fade routes in the end zone to min-receivers, and overall "cute" play-calling.
But now that he's gone, we're in shambles ?

Splain that to me, Lucy !

I was talking about Sean Payton going from 10-6 his first season to 7-9 in his second. But you are right the same thing in this situation except we only dropped off 1 game in record

Haven't seen anyone claim we're in shambles.

Pointing out that McVay, before the ink dried on his contract, was able to land a DC that many say is top notch. While Gruden, in now the beginning of his 4th year, still hasn't found one, doesn't look so good on Gruden.

And, on top of finding a DC, we now have to find an OC. Even if it's nowhere near as important as DC.

And wondering how all this MIGHT affect things going forward....should be topics of conversation on a team loving message board.

Exactly. And of course, the growth of Sean McVay has occurred despite being shackled to an 'inept fool' of a HC. His success was all in spite of being shackled to incompetency.
