Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

I look back at this season and I don't see Kirk as the issue, at least not enough of an issue to really worry about. With a defense that can really stop someone, an earlier emphasis on the run and switching out Matt for Fat Rob earlier, this team wins 3 more games and we coast into the post season.

I highly recommend listening to Kirk's interview yesterday on the Grant & Danny Show for those that have not yet heard it in its entirety Audio « CBS DC The first part talks about the last game, the later part about his future here.

My take from listening to it, is if offered a substantial long term contract he may or may not take it. If they low-ball him again he is out of here this year unless they franchise him again, in which case he is definitely out of here in 2018. Absolutely no sense at all to franchise him IMO unless the Team thinks it has a trade partner.

I am truly hoping that the team and Kirk can come to terms for a long term contract fair to both parties and not use the franchise tag for a one year rental. After-all what would be the purpose in that other then deferring a set back from year 3 of rebuilding to year 4?

Is a sign & trade out of the question? Why let him walk?

Man, talk about target rich.
Very true, but if we're looking at singular games then it was the Defense that cost us wins against both Detroit and Cincinnati. And probably one of the Cowboys games.

Point being that if the Defense had stepped up earlier in the season then we wouldn't have NEEDED to win that Giants game. Or the Panthers game. Or the Arizona game.
With all due.............poppycock. Absolutely nothing that happened before this past Sunday mattered. Spilled milk. Whatever.
Win and you're in (barring a tie). The offense pooped in their britches, and then played in it.

Wasn't it an interception by Kirk that ruined our chances in the 1st Dallas game?
Didn't the offense fail to score TD's early in the Cincy game? Wouldn't that have meant we wouldn't have NEEDED the missed field goal in overtime to win it? As is often the case, stats are cherry picked nonsense used to argue a point after simply failing to get the job done?

Stats aren't flowery shrubs. They're facts. Hard cold facts.
Jay Gruden is a loser head coach. Fact, right?
Cousins interception ended any hope of the playoffs this season. Fact, yes?
All the pretty passing numbers failed to put us in the playoffs. Fact, yes?

But facts and stats always need context.
Of course they do. when it suites one's argument.

I totally agree that we put up lots of fancy yards, but we under performed in the redzone and in scoring. Not arguing that the offense could and probably should have done better.
Good. Cause it's a losing argument.

However what you're doing is taking individual games totally out of the larger context.
Yes, and you're lumping them all together because you know that individually your assertions don't hold up half as well as they do lumping them together. Thereby skewing the results to favor your argument.

The FACT is that this team scored more than enough points on average acorss the season to win more games. But the Defense left us in holes to large to climb out of. Including needing a run at the end of the season to make the playoffs.
Horse Hockey! Your stats whitewash the FACT that some of those points the offense scored were due to the defense getting a turnover. Or that some of the points pinned on the defense were due to our turnovers. Some points were given up by the offense. Some of the points given up were by the special teams. And over 100 point came from three games against the Packers, Bears, and Browns. Talk about padding stats.

We didn't make the playoffs not simply because we lost to the Giants. But because we lost to the Steelers, the Cowboys, the Lions, the Cardinals, the Panthers etc. And honestly in alot of those games it was the Defense that was subpar, not the offense.
Wrong. If we beat the giants last Sunday, we are in the playoffs. Even with losing all those other games. That's a FACT you choose to ignore.

We ranked 12th in points gained per game across the season. Only 5 of those teams are from the NFC.

Ranked on the POINTS we scored alone we'd be the fifth seed. But we're not. Because the Defense let the opposition score more points that.
No, because stats don't determine who makes the postseason, or what seed they are. Can't change the rules to fit your wishes, my friend.

The reason... we were 19th in points allowed per game. There are only 12 playoff teams. Our Defense was at least 7 places away from posting the requisite number to allow what our offense did to get us in.

It's really simple math.
No, it's statistical gymnastics. That's all you've got. But thanks for playing.

The defense was the reason we were IN those high pressure win or go home games in the first place.

You're getting cause and effect mixed up.

The EFFECT was that the Redskins offense messed the bed in an important game.
The CAUSE was that we were in that position in the first place because our Defense couldn't come though all year.
No, you're mistaking hocus pocus for reality. Because your argument, based solely on cherry picked stats, is weak.

I am still shaking my head over the decision to call a time out on our last drive with so much time on the clock, moving the ball with such ease against a defense that was worn out. Why did they think it was a good idea to give the defense a rest?
One more thing about this specific incident.

My wife just starting really watching football with me about 5-6 years ago. And let me tell you, I have to calm HER down now. Sounds like a pissed off trucker during rush hour.

Anyway, being sharp as a tack, with a memory for rules to rival anyone, and an good understanding of in game strategy, when they called that time out she screamed...

"WTF did they do that for!!!"

Maybe it's just me, but I haven't seen Kirk claim he wants to be a skin for the rest of his career in a convincing interview. You guys get all the local team press and all but it sure seems like he's meh about a long term contract now. Sure, you dont wanna seem too eager for contract negotiations but still.

I'm on the fence with Kirk at the moment. If it's long term deal okay, but if someone like Cleveland or Houston offer a few 1st's then see ya.

Oh my God Ax honestly....

I'm not gonna stoop to retaliate. Things are starting to get nasty and I don't want to go there.

I respect your opinion, just don't agree with it.

Nuff said.

Aren't you familiar with the 'Ugly American' by now?

It's just a shame that unlike the Raiders, Cowboys, Seahawks and Patriots (Brady), the Redskins seemingly are never going to get that starting quarterback on a rookie deal that they can parlay into major investments elsewhere on the team to build a Super Bowl winner.

Kirk Cousins may end up being a top 10-12 quarterback if not cracking the top 10, but at every stop of the way the Redskins are going to have to pay through the nose for his performances.

That's the circumstance you end up in when you keep a clear bust like Griffin around until the end of the 2015 season and get a very late start planning your future.

Cousins is going to be 29 years old during the 2017 season.

Fans have to hope that not only will Cousins be a late bloomer that ends up 'continuing to bloom' but also is a guy that will head into his 30's and avoid the injury bug.

Well, I know you can't refute. But retaliate? lol

Hey BB, or anybody else that may know...

If Scot decides to let Kirk walk, what's the best compensatory pick we would get?

3rd is the highest possible, right? But are we limited to the 4th where he was drafted?

lol I agree that we lost a game that was 'win and in'

The Offence screwed that game up and screwed it badly. As did the coaching.

But I still maintain if our D had been even average during the season we would never have needed the 'win and in' game anyway.

If we have any hope of success going forwards the lesson from this year is the Defense needs fixing. We all know that.

I can blame the Offense for losing that game. But I personally am not going to blame the Offense for our missing the playoffs because the damage to those hopes was being done all season on the other side of the ball.

Maybe it's just semantics.

Anyway... moving on...

What does everyone read into the comments by Kirk on his contract? He's been asked at least twice now if he'd resign and he's been very noncommittal.

Just business? Or something else?

Well, the truth of the matter is, we don't really know what would have happened if the D played differently. It's too simplistic to retroactively assess what would have happened because of cause and effect. Everything would have played out differently. Might have been better. Might have been worse. We can all fancy a guess that sounds probable. But we really don't know. All we really know is, after everything that happened leading up to it, the offense had our destiny by the balls on a downhill pull. And they lost their grip.

No question the D needs to improve.
Also no question the coaching needs to improve.
No question the running game needs to improve.
No question the QBing in big games needs to improve.

I have no problem with a player playing hardball in contract negotiations. However, Kirk going public this early with what seems like a "You need me more than I need you" attitude is a little distasteful. I wonder how he would have felt if Scot met him at the tunnel after Kirk threw the loss clinching interception screaming, "You wanna ask me how I like you now!".

I'd have paid good money to be a fly on the wall and heard what (if anything) Scotty said to Kirk after the Giants game.

But yeah it's leaving a bad taste. It's not like I need him to pay lip service to wanting to come back but his attitude concerns me.

It kind of jars with what we know of Kirk. I do wonder if this is something his Agent is telling him to do. *shrugs*

It depends on who we bring in also. So it could balance out.

i think he is playing the game really. If he says he wants to be here but the offer isn't good then he gets at least 24 million if he franchises. The same thing goes also if Shanahan gets the job he could pursue Kirk which could lead to some draft picks. Also MCvay if he gets a job he could end up wanting to pursue Kirk also. I think MCvay is to young yet but who knows with some of these teams

Negotiation 101: Start high

not so high that you price yourself out either. Cousins seems to think that he is actually worth what hes asking. I say he was a good place holder, but we need to put together a great Oline, a Great defence and then go hard after a qb. not overspend on a guy who is a good bus driver
