Random Commanders Thoughts

Meh...the tie just means we won't be using the tie-breaker when we win the division.

Perhaps not, if the current game keeps going, the way it is.
Philly and Dally may be headed for a tie, as well.
So there could potentially end up a 3-way tie for 1st place - with all 3 teams having a tie on their record.

The season as I see it right now.

Dallas are going to the playoffs with the NFC East championship.
Cinci is a incredibly dirty team. I counted 3 Helmet to Helmet contacts, 2 late hits, 3 facemasks, 1 roughing the passer. All uncalled despite 4 of those being directly infront of a official.
Philly is collasping as predicted.
Giants are still able to beat chump teams.

Thats what it looks like right now. My redskins prediction is 9-5-1

Yep. Goodell will find a way! But I didnt notice my math was terrible so I am changing it to 9-6-1

I said it in the chat. Kirk may not be Manning or Brady, but we haven't had QB play this good in forever. Coaches need to scheme better in the redzone. We always seem bunched up with no spacing. I look at other teams and there's tons of space.

At the end of the year, Kirk's numbers will look awfully good for a new contract. But lost games like the Cowboys, Lions and now the tie will not be in his favor. We will forget his stats in those and only look to those games as reasons for no playoffs. And I can't say we would be wrong in doing so. We sign him up and its due to the stats that yielded no playoffs. Hope he can get us to the last game playing for something.

Seems Kirk's got us at #2 in passing as well as total yards so far. Sitting at #11 in offensive points as well as rush yards. scored.

Once those items convert to points we'll be cooking with gas!

Eh, Minnesota is 32nd in total yards on offense.

And they're 5-1

Stats mean squat. W's are the only stat with teeth.

MN is also #1 in defense though, every category at that.

True tho sbout the w's, only thing that really matters.

Yep, stats are good for individual comparisons and often shows production... W's & L's give more appropriate indication of how a team is actually playing.

Red zone failures can be attributed to most anyone but the fact that Kirk is putting up those numbers at least indicates that the opportunities for red zone performance are there for the taking.

Skins are roughly #5 in zone attempts per game (4), really bad in TD % (41) and middlin' in points per game (23+). One could say that's what our W/L record indicates.

If we can improve to say 3 TD's out of the 4 red zone attempts, that puts us at 60% where the 'big boys' like Carolina, Tennessee, San Francisco, Indy, Cleveland reside.

Stats be fun.

It would help our TD efficiency if Gruden and McVay would actually call some plays for the end zone when we are in striking distance.

We should be abusing safeties and linebackers with Reed and Davis running routes to the goal line and end zone from the 20-25 yard line.

we should be exploiting matchups outside by lining up Chris Thompson as a receiver and having him do what Brian Westbrook did for 7-8 years in Philly, score touchdowns with yards after the catch.

But we aren't aggressive. Instead we play around with short field position gains and losses of 4-5 yards and seem to be waiting on the 'inevitable' field goal attempt.

These 2 stats make me wonder how the hell Marvin Lewis could not win a championship with these 2 coordinators.

AFAIC, it's not how the QB performs individually, but how the QB uses the players around him. Kirk seems to be taking the easy way out so as to get a big dollar contract next year, but to the detriment of the likes of DeSean and Pierre. Anyone can throw to a player that is wide open, but will that player then gain the necessary yardage, or score a TD? Kirk can get us to the red zone but tends to go in to a bubble once he does.

One stat that is missing (conveniently?) is the red zone to TD conversion. I'm guessing it would be very low.

Found this little nugget:

Improvement in key red zone stat helped 2015 Redskins | CSN Mid-Atlantic

Basically, it all comes down to the running game and ours is lacking. No revelation there, but until we find a back we can lean on, we're going to continue to struggle in the red-zone. Getting turned away on 4th & 1 foot should tell you all you need to know. Improved red-zone efficiency is about putting a hat on a hat and grinding out a 1st down on 3rd & 2 or 3rd & 1.

is there an echo in here?

So far, those red zone problems are ..... coaching, QB choices and no stud RB, anything else? :)

Actually that sounds about right. :)

Last year Cousins was awesome in the red zone. He threw 22 TDs and no INTs and his passer rating was something like 110 or something.

Since he's come back down to earth, he's struggled in the red zone. 7 TDs, 4 INTs and a passer rating in the 70s.

Our coaches have not been able to adjust to Cousins' play levelling off like that and seem to be still relying on him to do all the work ... which is not working.

If we had a solid run game, we would have an effective Plan B for Cousins not being Amazing Forever. However, that possibility apparently didnt cross the mind of anyone in the front office. We went into the season with a very questionable RB corps and a lousy rushing scheme in an unbalanced offense.

Our passing game is still good enough, even without Amazing Kirk, to be competitive, and we will win games anyway. But hopefully the run game will get figured out eventually, because even in a passing league it turns out that its still kind of important.

You missed a factor - and that is stupid and unnecessary penalties in the red zone. We have more than our fair share of those turning 3rd and 2's into 3rd and 7's or 12's.

Agree with you pretty much Henry, but it still boggles me how we bog down inside the 15 yard line or thereabouts.

It's certainly not that we can't pass...

Cousins is playing pretty well. We have weapons to pass to all over the field. Reed, Vernon (I'm loving his addition to this team by the way!), Garcon, Crowder can all be short yard receivers and are great at finding space. Even DJax who is supposed to be our deep threat can catch them pretty reliably short.
I don't necessarily blame the O-Line either, as it's much improved over recent years. Cousins is rarely sacked these days (especially now he's learnt to throw the ball away instead of taking the sack) and even when the pocket does break down he's looking way more comfortable on the roll out with every passing game (that 3rd and 13 to Crowder was a thing of beauty!).
I like watching Cousins play to be honest, I like watching him learn and grow.

While we're not a great running team, we can do it well enough when we need to. Look at Sunday. Our first TD was a run from Kelley. That right there should have put notice on the Bengals that we will run for the Touchdown...

The problem is that our run game is horribly inconsistent. That needs to change.

One play we'll get 7 yards. Next we're minus 3. And then when it's not working we get pass happy. Which then makes us one dimensional and predictable, especially in the red zone.

Sunday was a classic example. We looked like two different teams. First half and second half.

In the first half we started out trying the run, got a touchdown, but then as the Bengals defense was spritely and we were struggling to pop out more than 2 yards a carry we went straight back to the Pass.
Kelley ran 10 times for 29 yards. No threat there so the Bengals would naturally key onto our passing game. As the field compresses our receivers struggle for room as there's no run threat to keep the defense honest and out of Zone. Plus, Defenses are now super wary of the Cousins to Reed combo.
Result... 10 points in the first half.

Second half Kelley runs 11 times for 58 yards, good for 5.3 yards a pop. Coincidentally we look like a better team in the second half scoring 17 points (ok so a little better!)

Point is that this game could have easily been a win. We could EASILY be a 6-2 team right now. Dare I say even 7-1. The only game I think we were outclassed in was the Steelers game.

The Skins have a tradition of good workhorse running backs. We've never really had an Eric Dickerson or a Herschel Walker. We've had the likes of John Riggins, grinding out yards consistently. That's what we need right now. A grinder. A smash mouth running back who is ALWAYS good for 3 or 4 yards a carry. That would do us wonders. It's what we had in Morris, and I'm still a firm believer that alternating him with Jones last year did us no favours. I think he'd be a reliable grinder behind this O-Line. So now I'm hoping we just put Kelley in now and just see what he can do as starter for the year. I'm over Jones I think. He's always been inconsistent and fumbling is an issue.

Lord yes! THIS!

The end of that game on Sunday after we got the ball back right at the end I thought we were headed for Hopkins Redemption! But got pushed back via a penalty again...

We really need to unload the gun we keep pointing at our feet.
