Agree. McL screwed the pooch in not addressing the Dline. It starts with the lines. It's stupid simple IMO. It may be a passing league to score, but the running game is a great form of Defense. Stopping the run is critical. If your line can't do that, say good bye to safety help over the top. This team will be mired in mediocrity until it fixes the lines.

Exactly, if we focus all our attention on the secondary, simply because it's a "passing league", then they'll still be able to run it down our throats. Pittsburgh did that with a backup RB, too.
If we had a half-decent DL that could stop the run, we could have easily gotten back into the game, when Pittsburgh put the game away, with a heavy dose of run.

The other solution would have been to zone Brown and let Norman go man on the other side.

But we did a jumble of things, none of which worked.

When you have new faces on defense starting in the opener it's often best to rely on your elite players and ask them to step up not step down.

So.....maybe......just MAYBE.....the defense makes adjustments after this game, and this game is not a microcosm or a reflection of how the team will play for every game, the rest of the season - which makes it silly for someone to completely update their season predictions just based on the first game.
 
I well remember Gibbs, and Petitbon being roundly criticized for the way they handled Wilbur Marshall when we first got him. He wasn't even on the field on many 3rd downs. Not worth hyperventilating over.........................................yet.

And, if we say we trust McCloo, then we have to accept that he's still looking longterm/big picture. I'm sure he sees everything we do, and much, much more. How many years did we wait for a real GM? Need to give more than a fraction of that time to fix shit.

Boy, a comfortable lead by halftime, ending in Victory Formation this Sunday would be a shot of fresh air, huh?

It's just tough to see a team this soft up front on the lines and see how we beat quality teams.

On defense we have old players on the line, these guys aren't recent picks that are going to get better down the line.

Jenkins (35), Golston (33), Francois (29), Hood (29), etc.

We only have one quality DL in Chris Baker and I imagine at 6'2 and 325 he would be a better DT in a 4-3 than a DE in a 3-4.
 
It appears we are still a team that will beat the really crappy teams, compete against the .500 teams and get our lunch handed to us by anybody headed to 10-6 or better.

So, if form holds we will be competitive the next two weeks against similarly flawed teams from Dallas and NY.

The Seahawks don't use guys to pass rush the way most teams do. The really leave it up to their front 3 for the most part. So three good DL means you don't really need to blitz as long as your secondary can keep their guys covered. It's what they do. I'd rather have three Bakers versus drafting a new pass rusher every year.
 
We're going to be having the same conversations many times this year because of the DL. Not that the other positions are unimportant, but we have the equivalent of several Tyler Polumbuses on the DL. These bums couldn't kick the teeth out of a mosquito even if they tried.

If Norman isnt any better than Breeland we spent way too much on him. Maybe Brown would have torched Norman, but we should have made their best guy beat our best guy. I dont understand how thats complicated.

Im not worried about Breeland at all. He's still the same young guy full of potential that he was two days ago. But he's our second best corner. He should be on their second best guy. If not all of the time and darn near most of the time.



I had this game chalked up as a loss all along. I assume we'll rebound. However, I am concerned that we made some guy the highest paid corner in the entire league and we cant scheme the defense so that his primary job is to shut down the other team's best WR. If that truly is the case, its a collosal waste of money. In my opinion.

Heard on NFL network, R wayne saying sometimes the defense will put two covers guys on the best receiver (one over the top), and use the best corner to cover the #2 guy. Said it was effective way to shut the passing game down.

Except when we did it you saw Deangelo Hall running in from bfe after the ball was caught for a TD.
 
Does everyone notice that Revis isn't covering Brandon Marshall tonight?
 
So Revis isn't covering the top WR, Sherman just started covering the top WRs last year, and Norman stays on one side of the field.

None of those guys are top corners, right?

And their coaches all suck too?

Um...Just have to say...they both play for the Jets. And it isn't practice.
