Official Game Thread - Steelers @ Redskins 2016

Considering the schedule 7-9 might be optimistic.

You can't be serious, can you?

Did you see our run defense tonight?

The Steelers ran it down our throat. We knew it was coming and still couldn't stop it. And Newsflash: signing 35 year old Cullen Jenkins will do very little to fix that.

We got run off the field,in Prime Time,at home, again.

2-15 at Fed Ex since it opened on MNF....and one of those victories belongs to Gus Ferrotte.

7-9 this year if we're lucky.

7 and 9? We should have 5 or 6 from our division alone. Then add the Browns, etc.

Antonio Brown caught it. Breeland missed it. Norman gave up 0 receptions?

I don't share the worry. It's week 1.

If Dallas is smart(not saying they are) we'll see a steady diet of Morris and Elliott this Sunday until we prove we can stop the run.

Outside of the Browns, there's not a gimmie win on the schedule.

I'd hold off on ordering playoff tickets.

I respect Alfred. I especially loved his tweet tonight that has Dallas fans upset.

He had 35 yards this weekend.

Even if he has 70 yards that shouldn't stop us.

Dez had 6 or 9 yards?

I don't see the worry here.

I still believe we win the division. Yes, it's only one game. Losing to the AFC is no big deal during the regular season. No panic here.

Doesn't change the fact that we were out-prepared, and out-coached. And it wasn't even close. Tomlin is clearly better. Much better. Period.

We looked completely unprepared. We were the JV team being used as a punching bag by the seniors.

Gruden CAN come up with some good Plan A's. Last night, didn't look like there was a plan at all. And as we all know, there is no Plan B.

Ever.

Beat Dallas!!

And that's bad? Is 35 yards bad? Do we not have to worry if a RB only gets 35 yards?

I only ask because that's 11 more yards than anyone on our team rushed for last night.

Of course, in Dallas' case Morris was the second back. He only carried the ball 7 times. If he gets 70 yards against us that would mean Elliot ran for about 150. And yes, i think we just saw that stops us pretty effectively.

Yes. Dak is not Big Ben and Garrett is not Tomlin. I expect a better showing next week. If not, I think 8-8 was probably optimistic.

But I dont think that means the concerns voiced about the Redskins all offseason long are unfounded. Until proven otherwise, the holes we all thought we would have, and have to cover for, are actually there.

And thats the worry.

Lmao. Good Lord.

It was one game. Yes, down by 8 in the fourth and losing by 22 sucks, but it's not the end of the world.

A few early season penalties will be fixed. The only things I find concerning are Breeland and Cousins needs to be sharp.

No biggie, onward to week two.

We're still fixing the same "early season" penalties for 3 seasons now..... no concern ? We had more then 100 hung on us on the ground by a back up running back.... no concern ? We gave up on the running game, setting up their D for an easy outing once again.... no concern ? Our secondary got abused because of scheme... no concern ?

Yup, no biggie.... onward to the week two spanking Dallas is going to lay on us.

I... Uh... Agree with McD.

:twitch:

It's a long season, this is one game that is virtually meaningless if we ever have to think about tie breakers.

My concerns about the running game appear valid. Tr1's concerns about our rushing defense also appear valid. Criticisms of coaching lacking adjustments appear valid.

But Cousins looked off to me last night. If he stays like that the whole season, we're screwed and he won't be signed to a long contract.

Bit I would guess he settles down after playing very limited minutes in the preseason. And the procedural penalties will stop also.

I don't think we're going to the SB (sorry McD), but I think we win the division. Maybe even make things interesting in the playoffs.

A lot of the sloppiness will be corrected.

The run games will have to be addressed in the off season with a vengeance.

Don't hold your breath.

Scot and the team knew about those issues last offseason and did nothing to address them.

You look at the last draft and think: deepest dline draft in ten years? Awesome! Surely we'll finally get a difference maker at that spot.

Nothing. zip,zilch,nada.

Our new Front Office talks a good game (Big man's game, you win upfront, etc) but so far, has continued the Redskins tradition of being dline adverse on draft day.

When you have to go back to Charles Mann to find the last impact dlineman we had on the roster...........

I agree this last off season as a whole was disappointing. I'm hoping we can learn from those mistakes, as I think Scot is a legit NFL GM and is not the second coming of Vinny.

I'm willing to attribute the over all sloppiness and "offness" of the offense to rust. I suspect Kirk will get sharper, the penalties will disappear, etc.

I'm also hopeful that could possibly apply to our run D as well.

(I have little to no hope for our own rushing game - Gruden seems antithetically opposed to having a run game)

I won't be shocked if our Run D looks a little better next week and better still the week after that.

It's disappointing that it doesn't look lik our coaches got everyone as prepared as we would want, but I'm hopeful things can be corrected.

Well that was a bad dream. Sad thing is woke up this morning to realize it wasn't a dream.

Kirk needs to relax and realize it takes all 16 games to earn that big money contract. He wasn't on and the Steelers baited him by playing soft to force him to be patient. Had he just kept dinking and donking we would have done a little better.

Matt Jones isn't a feature back. Something about him doesn't give me confidence. I get nervous every time I see him on a run.

I was very disappointed in our run D. Plus, we ran out of gas in 3rd QTR. We were not in good condition and it showed when starters played a full 60 minutes. Late in 3rd and 4th QTR the effort, especially on tackling, was pitiful.

Gruden and Co. were out coached. The Steelers D didn't blitz and baited us to be patient, much like the Patriots did to the Cardinals. The Steelers offense made sure to keep Brown away from Norman.

We can only hope things get better this week.

A few thoughts.

Basket of Deplorables comes to mind.

This game was just a continuation of the playoff game against the Packers. Not ready for primetime. An average team vs. a more physical and talented one. Coaches coached scared. Redskins hung in there just enough for 3/4ths of the game to make it look like they had a chance, when in all reality, there was never a chance we were going to beat the Steelers with the effort made. Tons of mental mistakes both by players and coaches. No pass rush. No run defense. Enough said.

I like angry Kirk Cousins a lot better than anxious nervous Kirk Cousins. Another shaky game like that from Kirk and I'd bench him for a game. That'll result in angry Kirk, who plays at a different level. Cousins really needs to learn how to handle the spotlight of big games against big opponents better. We were likely going to lose this game no matter what, but without Kirk stepping up there was zero chance.

Roethlisberger played an incredible game. He just owned us in so many ways, there's no value in describing it beyond that. We had no clue how to stop him.

This team seems to be incapable at times of rising above shaky officiating (and it was pretty shaky), and plain old bad luck. The bounce of the ball after the Kerrigan strip/fumble, the Arena League karom-shot interception for a Steelers TD... This team needs to ball out, and get some breaks from the officials and universal karma to even have a chance at beating a team like the Steelers. The lack of discipline by some key veterans was particularly concerning. Someone needs to put a boot up Trent Williams ass this week - I'm sick of him killing drives with just flat out inexcusable false starts and penalties.

And the secondary. That's where I was most wrong last night. I hope I'm not wrong about it for the season, as I do think our defensive backfield is loaded with far greater talent than we had to utilize last year. But it looked like a mess last night.

Positives were few and far between. Our kickers look great. Our WRs, when catchable balls were thrown their way, look great. And even pass protection by the OL looked fine. Everything else looks suspect.

And as I told Goaldeje, yes - it's still a passing league :) But that doesn't mean you don't have to be able to stop the run. It seemed like the Steelers were in 2nd and short all night long. That gives your QB a lot more options. And yeah, I do get it - if we had a better running game (or perhaps it's more a better commitment to the running game), our QB would have more options too.

Bottom line? It is just one game. We've lost our home opener 4 years in a row. Last year, it didn't keep us from winning the division. Truthfully, we had no logical expectation based on history and what we already knew (fanboy optimistic blog entries aside), that we were going to whip the Steelers. But we are a better team than we displayed last night. And let's hope that makes itself evident soon.

I don't care about the loss. It's one game. But what I saw speaks to bad coaching and that worries me. It's one thing to be outplayed by a better team, which Pittsburgh certainly is, but all of the mistakes, errors and gaffs just aren't acceptable 3 years into this. Very disappointed.

Cousins’s stat line against the Steelers wasn’t bad. Washington’s franchise-tagged quarterback threw for 329 yards and completed a healthy 70 percent of his passes, ranking him in the top 10 in the NFL in both categories after one game. Jay Gruden’s team picked up first downs between the 20s, put together four scoring drives in the game, and dominated the first quarter of play.

But the accumulated mass of those numbers belies their relative inefficiency. While Pittsburgh moved the ball in great leaps, Washington was stuck pressing forward in small steps; while Pittsburgh increased its production in the red zone, Washington repeatedly stalled near the edge of scoring range.

Kirk didn't look awful. He looked like he did at the beginning of last season, when he needed a heavy dose of the run game to support him.

Now, is that the real Kirk Cousins, or is the guy who lit up the league at the end of the year? I don't know. But I do know that when Old Kirk shows up, we NEED to be willing and able to run the ball. And I'm not sure we're either.

So hopefully New Kirk is the real Kirk. Otherwise it's going to be a long season.

I re-watched the majority of the first half this morning because I'm a sadist and early riser.

Kirk looked beyond shaky to start, the low balls early in the game were do to his release being so far in front of his body - that can be fixed, I attribute that to jitters. My bigger concern was trying to figure out some of the drop backs, numerous times what looked to be 5 step drops Kirk continued to drop further back out of a clear pocket making a 5 yard completion a 20 yard throw, that is not good, that's playing scared and quite frankly forces a ton of wear on a qb's arm, Kirk doesn't have a cannon, not smart. Also, he missed several easy reads like he was only siphoning in on his first read and then immediately going for the checkdown. Now some of this I think is the large amount of zone the Steelers D played but the coaches should have preached that during the week. Also, I don't understand if it was the coaches or Kirk but we could've run Jackson or Garcon on 7 yard crossing routes all game against that zone, pitch and catch let em run with the ball. I tend to believe Kirk's over reliance on Reed in his mind was a detriment overall here.

Running game - It's not even vanilla, it's all the ingredients in separate bags before being put in the mixer, it's just atrocious, no second level blocking, no initial push, I almost feel as if the O-line doesn't practice the running plays at all, maybe they don't. We don't have the personnel to run right at people, maybe not the athleticism to run traps and pulls either, I don't know but it's bad. Jones continues to run way too upright, you're not Earl Campbell, get lower.

Defense - Actually started out well and I think this defense is one that has confidence drastically shaken after some bad plays, miscues, refs or lucky bounces for the offense. The defense was gassed by the end of the 2nd quarter, I mean gassed, conditioning is part of football right. I won't get into scheme here because I couldn't figure out what exactly we were trying to accomplish in our coverages and blitz packages. Kerrigan needs to learn to swim inside more, his reliance on outside technique is stale, one trick pony doesn't win the show.

My overall assessment from last night, I haven't gone back to re-watch the second half yet, don't know if I will it was bad enough watching it once

Qb play C-, I stated above
Rb's - C- , I can't figure out how much their at fault for this pompeii like atrocity of a running game
Receivers - played well when given the opportunity B
0-line - B+ pass protection, Run blocking - Z for zero, Overall D with the penalties

D- line - F it, let's just line up everyone standing up we get blown off the ball anyway
Lb's - C, made tackles nothing spectacular to talk about
DB's - F, Breeland, Breeland, Breeland

ST's - B, No miffed punts, a weird fair catch, kicking was good, coverage was good

Coaches - F, holy jumping johosephat wtf, we made no adjustments, it doesn't even look like we put together a game plan for the the team we were playing against

Overall performace grade, D

My prediction against Dallas - better score early and often otherwise their going to rush for 250 yards against us

HAIL !!!

Trying to protect against injury in preseason hurt and it showed last night. Often the throws were low or behind receivers. I can't say it was a timing issue or Kirk was throwing at versus to the receivers.

In preseason we saw a lot of pre-snap penalties and holding calls. It continued last night. I believe the only OL without a penalty last night was Scherff.

Pass blocking looked good, but the Steelers didn't really blitz us. They knew we couldn't run, so dropped back to force us to have long drives via dink and donk. Thing is early on Jackson and Reed took 3-5 yrd passes and broke tackles for a 10-12 yrd gain. But we got impatient and tried to go deeper. When if continued success with short throws they would have had to come up thus opening up deeper throws.

The Steelers dictated everything last night. Where we should have dictated to them.

It wasn't Tomlin, it was Todd Haley and the freedom they've given Big Ben behind center. He is easily the most under rated QB's in the last 25 years. He is Peyton and Tom Brady caliber.

But you're right, I have no idea why our team looked so unprepared, but they did. I think Barry needs to get a little more creaqtive or we will have to score 30 points every game just to compete.

Continued neglect on the lines is the biggest problem. We have no chance at dominating anyone. I really miss that.
