It just depends on who becomes available, what McLovin thinks of our roster, and how much value he puts on Riley's ability to teach.

As far as Riley specifically, he's been on the roster since 2010. We now have younger, much cheaper guys like Compton, Foster, Spaight and Cravens on the roster. Is it worth it to pay $5 million to Riley? Has he hit his ceiling yet? What is his financial worth to the team, and how many snaps will he play?

As far as players to sign, if McLovin believes we have a top-2 CB group, he may believe that another top pass-rusher could put us over the top.

I don't believe we're about to invest any big dollars into a RB, but I do believe he'd drop some money on a serious pass-rusher, and maybe invest more money into the O-line.

If that player, or those players become available, then Riley's contract may be viewed as a "source of funds."

Riley gets my vote for surprise cut of the year.

If we are going into the 3rd week of the preseason, and are still planning on spending 11.5M plus, then I have to think Tr1's cries may not be as invalid and stupid and some want to believe.

Let's stick to reality. :) I don't see any reason to believe we'd take a step back this season. The only concern that might be valid is the tougher schedule.

As far as planning to spend, maybe or maybe not. But being prepared to spend in case another Norman type suddenly becomes available, of course. In a split second.

We're now at that time of the year where good players may have a falling out (Bosa as one example) and other teams are getting hit with serious injuries.

Granted, we're talking about New England in this case. And just about anyone can play RT in New England. That's not even a major cause of concern for them.

But if the right opportunity presents itself, I believe McLovin will pounce on it.
 
We're not cap-strapped. We're not going to make cuts for the sake of cap space. If we do, we're idiots.

If some magical player magically becomes available and we need to pay him $12 mil this year, yes, we should talk about who we'll cut to fit him in. Until then, I don't see Riley as a cap casualty. Players get overpaid all the time in this league. You don't get a trophy for being super-duper under the cap.
 
For years we've been lamenting how the better teams in the NFL know when to cut bait and replace expensive older players with younger, less expensive ones. If Riley gets cut, it won't be just about the money--it will be about going with younger and cheaper with comparable talent and the potential for more upside.

Sure. If he gets beat out he gets beat out.

I just don't think we're going to cut him because of his salary. Not if we don't have to.
 
The other consideration is Riley himself.

Is a guy who has been starting the past 4 years going to readily accept a backup role?

The feeling in the building may be that Riley may not simply be a 'good soldier' if Compton and Foster are confirmed as the starters.

Meanwhile, Martrell Spaight appears to be a guy with some upside at ILB as a #5 draft pick last year and both he and Terrance Garvin are guys that are going to produce on special teams.

I do believe he'd be the first person we look at if another Desean or Norman type becomes available and we need to clear space.

He has a lot that's not working in his favor--McLovin didn't draft him, McLovin drafted his position hard since coming here, and he's older and more expensive. He may also become a victim of a numbers game to keep an extra DB or WR. Others also play ST better.

And therefore, he gets my vote for the surprise cut this year.
 
I wouldn't see it as a surprise. I think Spaight is nipping at his heels right now. Two more solid preseason showings and I'd say he's a lock to make the team. Riley could be a numbers casualty.

Gotcha. I haven't gotten a sense that Riley is playing so badly that he might not even make the team, though I do sense a lack of enthusiasm about his future. He's in the final year of his contract, so I'm guessing they'll let him play it out and then just not-re-sign him.
 
They've got what, 14 or so active LB's in camp right now and will carry somewhere around 9 to the final 53? I find it hard to believe he'll get outplayed enough to be pushed off the roster. If he's outplaying enough guys to stay in the top 9 (he is) and cap's not an issue (it's not at the moment) then he should stay employed. If he's getting outplayed by nine other guys (he's not) then he should go. It's not a cost issue it's a performance one.

I agree he should not just squeeze into the final 53 so I should've said more like in the top 6 or so at least. All I would say is that if he is playing at that level he should be positioned on the depth chart without a salary factor and so long as he fills a need overpaying him not the worst thing. Currently cash isn't the main issue for the team, performance is. I guess the key part of that is 'fill a need' and if a player fills a niche he probably stays around (not necessarily Riley but any player). The Meriweather fiasco a few years ago. The Redskins ran out of options in the preseason and wound up with a need at Safety. Washington got pretty much raped for what they did, briefly, get filling a need.

BTW, I'd like to apply for reinstatement now for mentioning the name of the former Redskin noted above ...:hail:

Riley has been both injury prone and inconsistent during his NFL career. At 28, he is a liability in pass coverage. That is not going to change for the better going forward. There is no upside. What you see is what you get.

When you look at age, experience, salary, etc. it just doesn't look like Riley is a good fit for this team in 2016.
 
I believe Toler appears to be a lock to make this team, barring injury in the final two ps games.

It doesn't appear likely that Ziggy Hood gets cut after Jay Gruden went out of his way to last week to talk about the toughness and athleticism Hood brought to the DL.

The uncomfortable truth may be that Stephen Paea is McCloughan's first real failure as GM. The free agent hasn't show us much in Washington after coming over from Chicago.

He had a good year in 2014 with the Bears when he started all 16 games but outside of that what he did last year is pretty much who he's been the other 4 years doing fill-in work so yeah the Redskins paid quite a bit ($21M/4 yrs) considering his body of work hoping he could come in and nail it as a starter last year and that didn't happened. Now it looks like he's sliding the wrong way on the depth chart and a good chance Ziggy zags around him. As far as Scot goes; even Barry Sanders fumbled here and there - he still was given the rock. I expect a few more as time goes on. I suspect the good ones will outweigh, though.

They'll clear under $1m if they cut him this year but save about $12m over '17 & '18.
