Looks like most are grading us an A- for the draft. Unusual territory for us.

I started looking at McCloughan well before we chose him to right this ship...I know he is going to draft according to the style he has chosen to follow for years. However, we need help on the interior of the line...a 5th round pick next year is not what we needed in a draft so deep in talent on the interior of the DL. We should have used that 4th rounder on a big ugly. He has the ability to find later round talent, that was a chance to do so.

I was calling for McCloughan to be hired long before he was, I want him to build something here like he has been a part of in other cities, but that doesn't make me think he is beyond reproach either.

Read the Gruden post-draft comments. He is taking seriously about Matt Ioannidis adding 15-20 lbs and playing NT. I really think that's the plan :)
 
I had Ioannidis mocked a lot of the time this offseason. Watching his tape and seeing his attitude was the reason I had him pegged as a player that Scot could pick. Slotted him in the 5th, but I think we got something of a steal.

We were able to get a 5th rounder next year and need to keep in mind that the Redskins had no picks that round (Derek Carrier trade). We got it back - in a manner of speaking.
 
Also need to keep in mind that Trent Murphy is moving to DE. He is only 25 - so we've gotten younger on the line as well.
 
BB, how many future draft picks did we pick up from the draft?

he has always been excellant against the run. With The pick up of Matt we have at least 2 guys that will grow and help our against the run. With our top 3 picks we addressed future problems and immediately problems also. With 3 solid drafts in a row it looks like we have started to build a really good team
 
There were more holes and needs than this draft was going to fill. Our backfield has been as atrocious as our line, if not worse. He needs 3 drafts to really start righting the talent gap we've suffered for so long. I think the key point is there is an actual plan in place and they are executing on it. Gonna be fun watching it all come together.
 
If the first four picks are solid contributors, as the first four last year were, our defense should get a nice infusion of talent on all three levels, and we'll have one hell of a WR corps. Ultimately the positions don't really matter. Whether or not the picks hit matter.

McLovin seems to pick guys that hit more often than not. If that holds this year we should be in pretty good shape. The one big hole we really still have that wasn't REALLY addressed was RB. I guess McLovin really does still like Jones. Let's hope he's right. (I would have liked to have seen a center too, but when healthy I think Lich is serviceable.)

We'll see.
 
I look for Long to move to Center and Lavaou and Kouandjio to battle it out for LG

Beefing up a kid who is a natural DT/DE to become an NT is an uncertainty, much like Trent Murphy beefing up to become a DE in the 3-4...we have no idea if that will work. Reports say the kid is strong, but is he a NT? Murphy has been good against the run as a OLB and has had a few sacks, but he hasn't gotten any push on the interior the many times we used him there over the past 2 years in different defensive fronts. I mean seriously, beefing up 20 pounds is not going to make Murphy all of a sudden compete on the interior of our DL.

As many of you were saying during the chat, what about that kid from Baylor? You telling me a 4th or 5th round pick next year is worth more than Billings? I don't know enough about the kid, looks like a situational run stopper more than anything, but are you telling me that teaming him or another strong DL and Ioannidis is worse than Ioannidis and a 4th round pick next year?

Like Henry said, we beefed up all 2 levels of our defense, but we could have shored up the DL a little more with another mid-round big ugly. That's all I'm saying. Next year's 4th doesn't matter this year when the "talent" at DL was so deep.

I'm less concerned that we didn't get a center in the draft. The only one I think was worthy of a top pick was Ryan Kelly and he went 2 slots before we had a chance to pick him up.

Not sure what long will be able to do, but Lichtensteiger had some success last year. Another year with the RT and RG to gel, Trent is still a beast and Lavaou back will hopefully help the under sized Licht. It seemed like our run game shut down with Lavaou out...I am more concerned about the LG position than center. I just thought Kelly was an instant upgrade at center.

I won't question the 1st 3 rounds, they chose players that appear to be worth the value of the pick. However, the rest o our draft seems quite odd.

Well, I was going by seeing somewhere that it takes roughly $5mil to sign a normal draft class. And, that we currently had just under $5mil to work with. It doesn't matter what they'll make over their 4yr contract. Only this year. As any signing bonus, no matter how small, would accelerate to full payment this year, if they don't make the team. For whatever reason.

As much as we all like for players to renegotiate their contracts, they don't have to. And, with Garcon and Jackson, we may not want to. So, approaching it from worst case scenario, I see it as possible that the team could be planning on riding out the year with G&J's contracts, as is. And that even if we cut Roberts and/or Culliver, it just barely gets us to the available cap space McGloo wants in reserve entering the season.

Additionally, we'll never know if McGloo believed this draft was really so deep in the Dline, as many have stated.
At least not Dlinemen that he wanted on this team. Even if he said it was, there are no bigger liars, than football GM's concerning the draft.

Andre Roberts will be released on June 1 ($4M saved). Chris Culliver will be a June 1 cut as well or he will do a massive restructure.

We should have about $12M in cap space after the draft picks are signed, maybe more if there is a surprise cut or two. And this is not taking into consideration a new contract that Cousin Kirk may sign by July 15. That would add several more millions to the cap.

The team is still going to have at least $40M in cap space next season - perhaps as much as $65M.

Very true. But we don't no that it won't either. And if the majority of added weight is muscle, then it seems likely that both players would have to improve.

Add to above statement, that a healthy, disruptive Galette will be lined up next to Murph. With Murph already pretty darn good against the run, passing downs could be quite scurry for the opposition. Especially if they forget that Kerrigan feller coming from the udder side.

No way to know. But Scot thought it wise to pass on him. I do know that every year, there are a handful of can't miss Dlinemen that fail to meet expectations. And as my good friend fansince always reminds us (where the hell is he BTW) team and scheme go long way in determining a players success. Even if Billings lights it up, it's not a given he would have done it here. The reverse is true as well.

Cool. I was thinking that they might be planning on only cutting Roberts. And not counting on Kirk signing a long term deal. I'd think they have to plan for that, in case it happened.
