Random Commanders Thoughts

To me, it's all about the numbers and Scot's feel about the player, both as a teammate and a fit in the D he's building.

That we made a hard offer so quickly tells me Scot must already have decided the fit is right, so hopefully the numbers we've offered don't handicap us elsewhere. I like our numbers guys these days, so at this point ... if the deal does NOT get done, I'm going to chalk it up to Norman wanting more than we're willing to pay, in which case I'm good.

If he DOES sign, it changes the defensive landscape here pretty dramatically heading into 2016.
 
Norman is not going to pick a SF team that most have coming in last in the NFC West unless the money is WAY better.

Once you go 15-1 and play in the SB you don't want to backslide all the way to a team with an uncertain qb situation in a division where Seattle and Arizona are legit 11-13 win clubs.

All Norman has to do is look at how DeMarco Murray fared in Philly after being signed by Kelly.

Kelly is as big a question mark right now as Kaepernick.

I have a ton of work to do today, so I'm trying to stay off social media until this afternoon.

I expect two contracts. The agent's contract which will claim 5 years, $15.5 million a year.

And then the real contract, $13 million or less per year, and we can dump him after two years.

As far as the player goes, I think once the fans get to know his story a little better.....his upbringing, the fact that he walked on at a small college football program and kicked ass, where he was drafted, etc......they'll recognize quickly that this is definitely a Scot McLovin player. He's a fighter. He's also an All-Pro.

Also, I'm not sure who started this rumor about only one incredible season. in 2014, he was the 4th best rated CB in the league.

When was the last time we had an All-Pro CB entering his prime?

I changed my mind. I was originally against signing Norman. But the more I read the more I like him.

He has a strong work ethic and a nasty side which matches up well with Breeland.

Also doesn't seem like the kind of guy that will stop playing hard once he gets paid.
 
I'm completely with Ax and Henry on this one. This is the kind of move that can blow up in our faces, and I am hearing a lot of explanations and rationalizations that remind me an awful lot of what we heard when Haynesworth was signed. I am NOT expecting Haynesworth level-suckitude from Norman if he comes on board, but he's got a hell of a stretch of dominant WRs to start the season, and I would worry about fan reaction if he doesn't shut them down.

Scot has earned some trust from us, and I am not going to go back on that now, but if this doesn't work, a lot of that trust evaporates, imo.
 
Yeah, that flu bug is hard to shake.

Our money guys seem to make decent enough deals while still eyeing the future of the team so I'm not too shook up about any numbers that'll come out of this if we do sign him.

Just hope the 'read' by Scot is spot on and he gets his first 'big splash' signee right. (Jr. I know but he's a try me deal)

As soon as we fans accept notion of this type move and buy in, he'll probably go elsewhere....sigh.
 
Haynesworth though had a number of character flaws brought out in incidents in Tennessee which the Redskins simply decided to overlook at the time.

I don't get the idea this front office takes those kinds of silly risks, hoping for the best with questionable characters.
 
If this move DOES happen, it signals to me that Scot thinks we're closer than I think we are. No more excuses for Joe Barry's D - with a shutdown corner on one side and a young, could-be-shutdown corner on the other side, I want to see Dez throwing his helmut a LOT.

Signings like this aren't made if you think the team could possibly take a step back. To me, this kind of signing is made when you think you're on the brink of something.

Could also be seen as a chance to upgrade the talent level of an entire unit while still working on a talent pipeline allowing development of the young drafted guys.

Have or get an established top gun (or two), have current up-n'-coming young guns keep working and allow the gunsmith to bring up the new guys with less immediate pressure to perform.

Let alone the competition amongst all that can be had.

He is not a shut down corner you just sick on the best receiver. Will he be asked to do similar things he's successful at?

If he was coming in at $5M-8M a year, I could see that argument. Hell, I think I made that argument last year about Culliver. But this is going to be a big contract, no matter how it is structured. It's a massive risk and I can point to 3 FA failures to every 1 FA success you can find for this team (I'm being conservative :)) I don't see how this is anything but a win-now move for us. You don't bring a guy in at anything over $12M/year to help develop the younger guys, imo.

Since we both made similar arguments albeit with dissimilar price tags we might be closer to the correct conclusion than we think ;)

Perhaps the goal is to stay atop the NFCE and consistently get us into the playoffs over the next four or more years and this move facilitates while our D line and ILB's are getting drafted and developed.

But yeah, it's high ticket number to take that path.

Still not aware of any done deal yet anyway so we're all just blowin' horns and havin' some fun.
 
If our d-line can't get more pressure, there's little chance he will look much better than average.

highlighted part is all the more reason to sign him.....fan reaction doesn't matter, especially worrying about it ahead of time, or using that as a reason not to sign him
 
The faith in McLovin is pretty thin all of a sudden :). We have to rebuild our secondary. Someone we never had on the radar is suddenly available - and not just someone, one of the best at his position. If the Redskins weren't courting him - THAT would be incompetence.

As far as pass rush goes, someone a little while back mentioned an article where it described Scot watching us play the Packers and all he kept talking about is "we need more pass rush".

I believe he'll take care of that. :)

BTW, Listening to NFL Radio this morning, Booger and Ross were talking about DL prospects and pass rushers in this draft and Ross asked Booger, if you need one, who would you draft?

Without hesitation,Booger said Noah Spence or Chris Jones. Thinks both could be special.

Maybe one or both of those will be available at 21? Maybe BB can chime in on that?

Need draft day to get here!!!
