Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

Tandler gets into a valid question, will Kirk live up to a new contract or fade into oblivion as some others have.

First of all, it should be stated that there is never any guarantee that a player will perform well after he signs a big-money contract. Some players live up to them, some don’t and past performance does not guarantee future results.

That said, let’s look at some single-season performances of the three quarterbacks that you mentioned and compare them to Cousins in 2015. The seasons for Cassel (playing for the Patriots) and Kolb (Eagles) are the ones right before they got their big contract extensions. Foles’ (Eagles) numbers are from two years prior to his extension since that season was the basis for the contract the Rams ended up giving him.

Tandler cautions about nothing being certain but read on why Kirk might be different

I think we all know that he could flame out. I think we're hopeful he won't based on how he's gotten here and how hard it is reported he works on his craft. He is still growing and learning, so hopefully he'll continue to improve.

Whatever deal we decide to give him, it should definitely be one that gives the team an out after 2 or 3 years. Think that's the smart way to go with the unproven/still developing QBs.

If Cousins wants a 5 year deal that's not friendly to get out of as Matt stated above if he falters after 2-3 years, I'd be in favor of the franchise tag, here's 20 million, put up or shut up. Kirk had a good year, set some records but still has yet to beat a winning team in his career, I have no desire to see a Cassel or Schaub situation in Washington.

Leaving ... consults abacus ... 12 Super Bowls, 25% of 49 played, won by guys taken rounds 5 and later?

I'm okay with that.

Just for fun I went back and made my own tally.

Superbowl-winning QBS taken,
1st round, 1st overall: 16
1st round, 2-10 overall: 6
1st round, 10+ overall: 5
1st round: 27
2nd round: 3
3rd round: 5
4th round: 2
5th round: 0
6th round: 5
7th round+: 6
Undrafted: 1
Rounds 2-12: 22

If you look at just the past 20 years, since free agency and the salary cap have really taken hold, the number look like this:

1st round, 1st overall: 5 (Elway x2, Manning, Manning x2)
1st round, 2-10 overall: 1 (Dilfer)
1st round, 10+ overall: 4 (Rodgers, Roethelisberger x2, Flacco)
1st round: 10
2nd round: 2 (Favre, Brees)
3rd round: 1 (Wilson)
4th round: 0
5th round: 0
6th round: 4 (Brady x4)
7th round+: 1 (Brad Johnson)
Undrafted: 1 (Kurt Warner)
Rounds 2-9: 10

This season there are three first overall picks (Manning, Newton, Palmer) and Tom Brady in the finals.

Looks like taking a QB first overall, if he's there, is the way to go. Barring a 'sure thing' with the first overall pick, you may as well wait a bit. I don't know that reaching with the fourth overall, as the Dallas Guy thinks, is the best way to go ...

That, and don't ever take a QB in the 5th round. :)

Tandler cautions about nothing being certain but read on why Kirk might be different

I read this article... I would've expected more from Tandler, really... There are reasons to think Cousins isn't the next Kolb, Foles or Cassel, but he probably will be if he goes to a new team and a new offense. We basically saw the best and "almost-worst" of Kirk Cousins in this last season (his worst was final 3 games of 2013 and NYG of 2014). He was a mediocre QB at best for the first 7.5 games of the season, and looked bad-to-average in every game against good competition. I think Tandler was really half-asleep when writing this piece.

Anyway, as for Kirk Cousins, there was a lot of improvement and he could very well be our QB for the long-haul. However, it's time to really find out what the Redskins think of Kirk & what he thinks of the Redskins. Here are the scenarios that I layed out a while ago:

1) If Kirk does nothing in negotiations, then the Redskins' options are:
a) Franchise tag him with exclusive designation (~$24M this year... if they franchise tag him again the following year, it will be ~$28M). The own his rights exclusively and no other team can negotiate with him. He can work out a long term deal or sign the FT.
b_ Franchise tag him with non-exclusive designation... Same money, but other teams can negotiate with him and Redskins would be able to choose between letting Kirk walk and receiving draft compensation from team that signs Kirk.
c. Transition tag him... ~$22M and other teams get to negotiate with Kirk. Redskins get to choose to match (franchise or transition) or let him go to other team, no compensation received by Redskins if they let him walk.
d. Let him hit the open market and try to work a deal... Redskins would have to beat the market here.
2) Kirk's Agent will likely negotiate based on the Franchise tag. Kirk will likely sign for no less than $24M guaranteed in the 1st year of his contract. The agent will argue that in order to retain him for 2 years, the Redskins might have to franchise him twice which would push his guaranteed salary to $52M over the 1st 2 years of his contract.

If the Redskins sign a deal with Kirk Cousins, the guaranteed money in the 1st 2 years of the contract will likely be somewhere in between $24M & $52M...

What I think happens might be interesting here... I've been saying for a while that I would Franchise tag Kirk Cousins and then try to work a sensible deal and see how much he is committed to being the QB of this team long term. However, I think it's likely that the Redskins will NOT Franchise tag Kirk Cousins... They probably should offer the Andy Dalton deal and see if Kirk & Agent bite (Andy Dalton is 6-year and $96M, but only like $17M guaranteed). That is a respectable QB deal and one that won't get laughed at. Kirk will not sign that deal while the FT is an option. There is a period of a few days prior to free agency that players can negotiate with other teams. This is probably where Kirk's "open-market" value will be determined. Of course, his agent is probably going to be well-aware of his value on the open market.

The Redskins risk losing Kirk Cousins this way, but the deal that Kirk Cousins gets may be less than say an Andy Dalton deal & the Redskins should swoop in on anything less than Andy Dalton...

Again, one thing about the Dalton deal... It was similar to the Nick Foles & Colin Kaepernick deals... There was one year left for Dalton to play on his rookie deal, so the team held the upper-hand. Cousins has the upper-hand until his open-market value is determined.

Anyway, this is going to be interesting... We'll really see how the Redskins feel about Cousins & Cousins feels about the team.

I'll leave the contract talk to those who are clearly more knowledgable than me. The only think I'll add is that I seem to remember consensus when Dalton, Kapernick and Tannehill were signed that all three were going to get massive, enormous contracts because the players had the leverage of the FT to work with. Yet that did not happen for any of them. The teams got the better end of the bargain by almost all accounts.

I will be interested (duh) to see where this ends up, but I would caution against prognosticating too much. Recent history suggests we may get a better deal than we are thinking now.

All bets are off if Bradford gets the $25m/year his agent purportedly wants from Philthy... :stooges:

Bradford is the last unicorn of untethered rookie deals, he's still dreaming in la la land. Reality should settle in and become more value based on his actual worth per the market.... but this is still the NFL so who knows what will happen.

Not sure of the actual significance of this 'award' but is does garner some national recognition for the kid, not bad in my estimation.
Would be nice if he was named the same next year.

His tremendous year-to-year rise was recognized on Friday, when the Pro Football Writers of America named Cousins their 2015 Co-Most Improved Player of the Year award winner, an honor he is sharing with Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman

If we are forced to franchise tag Kirk Cousins, and Carson Wentz is available at #21... I'd be tempted to pull that trigger. However, that's for another thread.

He seems to be projected in the top 10, even as high as number 4 by some.

For what, The Cult of Carson Thread ?

Sorry, this is the Cult of Cousins thread... I shouldn't have considered alternatives in case Cousins wants a bigger commitment than the Redskins are willing to give.

Carson Wentz has won as many games against teams with a winning record as Kirk Cousins has, and you'd have him as a development QB for 1 year while you get another year to see if Cousins is worth a huge commitment...

Anyway, if we have to franchise tag Cousins, Carson Wentz would then become "Plan A/B" and we see how Cousins handles the pressure. If he can't handle it, we move on. If he does, we can be patient with Wentz.

Honestly? You probably should look at a little tape or be a bit more informed before you pull out a "Cult of xxxxxx" comment. People are talking about Wentz going in the top 10... I've been talking about this guy since September. I think @RedskinsCult was talking about him in July. He was largely viewed as a 2nd-3rd round pick back then. I just hope he doesn't go to the Eagles or Cowboys. Comparisons have been made to Flacco, but I think of him as a Cam Newton with better mechanics coming out of College. His knocks are level of competition (North Dakota State) and some question his accuracy, but people said the same about Cousins until week 7 this year (and also week 18).

Methinks Kirk may be trying to tell us something ...

So, who's this new guy Wembley?

He's apparently doing all kinds of stuff over there to promote the game. I do like, as is inferred, that he intends to be there for the game.
