We've had enough conversations about this for you to have to see that I am on the correct side of this argument, have been from the beginning. You guys want to excuse the past 3 years for whatever reason...go ahead. The most important thing for you to understand is that the current head coach (who just won the division) sees it like I do. This kid will only succeed when/if he's mature enough to let someone take 3 years on him. That means he has to ride the bench because he's proven all he can do is run an offensive scheme that is now antiquated. And the idea he can learn is still...unknown.
Admit it Al, you were wrong about Griffin. He isn't even very good at politics, like you suggested when he was a rookie.
El....this is a complex issue. You're the one invested in being "right". most of us on the other side left the station a long time ago vis playing griffin. That doesn't mean we obliterate history and forget how disgusting the whole process was, how the organization failed the player as much as the player failed to mature, how the HC is an eff'ing mediocrity and always will be....it screams through the TV screen every time I watch and listen to that child. might as well get this out of the way now.....Cousins cuts it...great! He's earning it. but Gruden....I hope he fails and don't really care what anyone else thinks about it. I have been around leadership at very senior levels. I have been around great people. I had Joe Gibbs to observe. There is nothing special about Gruden. I know it when I see it...and he aint it.
I really don't give a hoot what the rectal orifices on 92.7 and other stations chirp about: it's a business and it's in their their self-interest to play things they way they do. we won...a nice departure from the last two years. but let's not leap into fantasy land. the NFCE was the worst in years.....we didn't register a win against a single quality team.....we are playing a GB team that is horrendous. the goodness is there in team improvements....but folks are over-evaluating the true significance. we will be drafting in a 20+ slot and will play a tougher sked next year. I'm looking forward to that next step. per previous, I don't really care that much about what is going on now. I like that we are wining. I like the progress the QB has made....in context...I like watching the games with my friends and hooting it up! but attaching deep meaning to all of this? nope. been there before. more interested in the goal line than way stations.
This team *ucked up a true talent. griffin didn't have a strategy from day 1. whether it was self-realization, too much business/celebrity action, or too many flaws to correct...he bears heavy responsibility for the outcome. he's bright. a good team player. a quality young man. I hope he moves on to another franchise and a better HC, puts in the time, develops into a top tier QB.
THIS IS A FAILURE OF LEADERSHIP AS MUCH AS IT IS GRIFFIN'S FAILURE.
I get it that you have been emotionally invested for years in his demise (just like I am in Gruden's) and that his off-field behaviors didn't meet your checklist. all understandable. it's not personal El. No one will ever change my mind that a fundamentally decent person with high upside was eff'd up by this franchise. no one will ever change my mind that a key part of the dynamic was people/media not liking the man's personality. no one will ever change my mind that Gruden lied and gave up early on developing this young man - a young man who has accomplished a lot more than Gruden has achieved in his coat tail life.
El....in the Navy I came across many young sailors who started off badly. I/the team I was on made success stories out of many of them...a high percentage. it is a process. it requires time and understanding. it requires commitment. it demands leadership......all missing in Jay Gruden.
