Everyone has to play good teams and bad teams. The record evens it all out. And right now our team with Cousins at the helm has the 28th ranked offense in the league. It has the 24th ranked pass attack.
After three-and-half years and 19 starts, Cousins appears to be a fair QB that can lead his team to victory against bad teams at home. There are worse things to be, but I wouldn't classify him as 'the first truly decent QB we've stumbled upon in a long, long time.'
Forgive me, but I'm really stuck on that phrase. I honestly thought you might have been referring to Griffin, because even though he's only a shell of the player he once was, he was at one time a 'truly decent QB.' The 2012 season may be a distant memory at this point, but THAT was something we hadn't seen in a long, long time. Not another year of plodding along beating bad teams and getting crushed by the good ones.
Cousins this year? I'd say he's an ok QB with a talent-level and effectiveness similar to Jason Campbell or Gus Frerrotte. The Redskins could go 4-6 with this team and this schedule with either of those guys. I suppose compared to Grossman or Beck or Danny Wuerffell he's a 'truly decent QB'. Compared to the world? I wouldn't go that far.
Cousins is 27. You want to keep him until he's 28 or 29 to see if he turns into something special? We could do worse. But this team does not collapse without him. I wouldn't open up our wallet for him simply because he's not terrible. We can find another not terrible QB if we have to.
