Kirk Cousins Development Tracker

How is he developing? His stats scream mediocrity, he's making the same stupid throws as he always does when he gets nervous, and we can't even win 2 in a row.

If it's not about winning games then we shouldn't even worry about it. But, it is. It always is. You play to win the game. And that is exactly how it works.

so...both mike & steveaa make credible arguments IMO.

steveaa: does your position also mean that QB picks and fumbles...even if they lose games or demoralize the team...are trumped by game time experience? the development line of thought has merit - but at what cost?

It's not an excuse. It's a fact, and a relevant fact.
How many starting QB's in this league, have more turnovers than their part-time RB ?
I'm gonna confidently say, every single one of them.

we have 9 fumbles between 6 different backs in stats. Cousins has 3 of them.

Cousins has 10 interceptions by himself.

Its pretty safe to say that his 10 turnovers are more than the 4 fumbles lost by our entire running back committee.

To be fair, he's played two undefeated teams, perhaps the best teams in each conference, in the last 3 weeks.
No other QB in the league has been able to beat those 2 teams.
Also, he should be judged by his intangibles, and not just his won-loss pctg.
And definitely improving. Why cut the cord on a guy who is constantly improving ? Because no-one can definitively say what his talent cap is yet.

Everyone has to play good teams and bad teams. The record evens it all out. And right now our team with Cousins at the helm has the 28th ranked offense in the league. It has the 24th ranked pass attack.

After three-and-half years and 19 starts, Cousins appears to be a fair QB that can lead his team to victory against bad teams at home. There are worse things to be, but I wouldn't classify him as 'the first truly decent QB we've stumbled upon in a long, long time.'

Forgive me, but I'm really stuck on that phrase. I honestly thought you might have been referring to Griffin, because even though he's only a shell of the player he once was, he was at one time a 'truly decent QB.' The 2012 season may be a distant memory at this point, but THAT was something we hadn't seen in a long, long time. Not another year of plodding along beating bad teams and getting crushed by the good ones.

Cousins this year? I'd say he's an ok QB with a talent-level and effectiveness similar to Jason Campbell or Gus Frerrotte. The Redskins could go 4-6 with this team and this schedule with either of those guys. I suppose compared to Grossman or Beck or Danny Wuerffell he's a 'truly decent QB'. Compared to the world? I wouldn't go that far.

Cousins is 27. You want to keep him until he's 28 or 29 to see if he turns into something special? We could do worse. But this team does not collapse without him. I wouldn't open up our wallet for him simply because he's not terrible. We can find another not terrible QB if we have to.

Well...you're entitled to believe that. That's cool.

I see it as momentum changers and the fact that every time he does that our defense has to get back up and go out there to try and stop someone.

At times yes, and I think this is one of those times. I think it's critical to this team to know what they have in Kirk. I realize many on the other side of this discussion have already decided, and that is fine. If Kirk was the only, or even the main reason the team was losing(my opinion of course) I might think differently. But I view this as a young up and coming team (please, oh please Mr. McL. :) ) that needs to get settled at QB sooner than later. We don't have a better option we can put in at this point. I just see no upside to sitting him, even if you wanted to consider it punitive. I think if his play was such that it was demoralizing the team, it would be so bad consistently we wouldn't have this discussion.

'truly decent QB.' He was far more than that. :) I think if Cousins doesn't establish himself strongly the rest of the way, I'm only interested in keeping him as a stop gap if we can't do better right away. If he doesn't, I think Gruden is gone, McL goes with a guy of his choosing and we go hunt us up a QB.

I don't get it, we played one of the very best defenses in the NFL a week after Kirk Cousins was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week, and he had a poor performance...now he should be benched?

You know what he did after his last 2 poor performances? He went out and won the NFC Offensive Player of the Week.

He will and should start the rest of the season. At the end of the season, he'll be judged.

How in the name of all that is holy did we revert back to the idea that someone else should start?

While I agree he shouldn't be benched, being it could easily cause Gruden to lose what he has as a team, winning O player of the week really doesn't mean all that much in the grand scheme of things. He hasn't played even close to that level on a semi consistent basis. In fairness, he needs to finish out the season so he has a full season to be evaluated on, not because he won an award.

The rest of your comment is good too, but this if I could double like this part I would. He needs the rest of the season and then he can be evaluated on the entire season. Fans get too high or too low after a game. Take the season as a whole and then make the decision.

Yup...consistency has been lacking, for sure. But there are a couple on this board ready to throw him out with the bath water, right now, because of the shitty performance against Carolina. The same people who were lauding his accomplishments for winning NFC Player of the Week, last week.

Again, I think most agree...judge Cousins at the end of the season, like I mentioned.

Wasn't he benched last year for lack of performance?

It's not one game he's lacked, it's several and it's helping cost us games. If there were no issues putting in McCoy last year I'm not sure what the problem is now. He hasn't improved enough to say "yep, that is where he is better"

He still throws it short
He still throws stupid picks
He still gets rid of it too fast instead of trying to extend

But now all of a sudden me mentioning "benching" him seems crazy.

It's not all of a sudden, you've mentioned it after (and during in some cases) every poor performance he's had this year.

He's not a perfect QB, we don't have anyone who is better on the team right now, they want to see what he can do long term. He gets the rest of the season to do so. Like Pete and others have mentioned, at the end of the season if it's been yo-yo like it has much of this season...judge him then. But to think benching him at this point will solve anything, it doesn't. There is a plan in place, they are following it and we are showing overall improvement in some areas...we are not winning a Super Bowl this year, but we are beating teams we should beat, benching him in favor of a career backup does nothing for this team, right now.

No, I haven't. I have never brought it up before.

And, honestly, I only brought it up because I was curious what it would take. We benched Jones for fumbling and we benched Cousins last year. I wasn't saying we should...I kind of got talked in to defending benching him.

At this point we know who Cousins is and we know who he isn't. He is an average QB who can win at home against crappy teams with losing records. That is not what you want behind center. He is too quick to checkdown, get rid of, and make poor decisions. We don't need that either. Why not see if McCoy can maybe get some reps in, get the younger guys like Carrier, Crowder, Ross, and Jones some good work on the field instead of continually struggling with the guy who is going to throw the 4 yard dump off?

He still throws it short >>>>> Takes what is given, but has shown he will go deep when we have a receiver that can get down the field.
He still throws stupid picks >>>>>> This is an area he has definitely improved in. Every QB does this occasionally, but he's trending down significantly
He still gets rid of it too fast instead of trying to extend >>>>>> I agree with this and I think it comes with playing time and getting trust in the Oline. One that wasn't great in pass pro this game. I also think Gruden fails to take advantage of his ability to get it out quickly. We are missing some traditional quick hitting West Coast plays in this offense.

He was benched last year because he crumbled mentally every time he made a mistake. He's demonstrated repeatedly this year that he can forget a mistake and bounce back. He also was starting last year under completely different circumstances. If you are going to blame him for Costing us games, you need to give credit for wining games too. The entire team is inconsistent and it doesn't appear to me that Kirk is to blame for that. The entire team is on a roller coaster ride and I put that on the shoulders of the HC to figure out how to fix. I can understand wanting him benched if you've decided he's all he'll ever be. At that point, all that matters is winning games. But when you are trying to develop a QB, all that matters is developing him. Yes, you want to win, but you don't sacrifice the QB for the wins. That's short term thinking. It's what this organization has been doing, short terming, since Snyder took over. Every one here wants to see the losing come to an end. But after 2 decades, I'll suffer a little longer if it means taking time to develop the team correctly. He's shown he can perform well when things are going well around him. That INT this game is what I see new QB's do when they are learning. I realize he's not a rookie, but I still contend there are things you have to learn and experience in live action. I see a guy who can be pretty good when the team around him is good. I think Aikman is a good comparison and there are parallels there. Looked horrible until the team started to build around him. He would have been horrible without the team he had. Take a look at his stats if stats are your thing. He's were about as pedestrian as they can be. Dude had a .85 int/td ration. Bradshaw was even worse. There are two QB's who don't belong in the Hall based on stats.

I have not seen him hit ANYONE deep...he has hit them around 20 yards and then the receiver goes deep. But I have not seen a ball travel accurately without floating or looking horrible that was deep.

10 interceptions in 10 games. that is not improvement. The only games we have won are where he didn't turn the ball over. But that doesn't seem possible considering the teams now know we don't run for shit and dump the ball short every single down.

I guess I don't see him bouncing back and learning from his mistake. Interception vs Carolina is a perfect example. I do give him credit for winning us games...that second half against TB was good on him. Especially that last drive. I have never had a problem complimenting him when he does well. I also don't have a problem calling a spade a spade. I see a guy who can beat lousy teams...but only at home.
