PFT: Donovan McNabb is headed to the Washington Redskins

After this, it's almost a given that we're going with Okung or Bulaga at #4. I also wouldn't be the least bit surprised if we signed Flozell Adams, another guy I don't really like but is STILL better than anyone we currently have on the roster.

Another thing this trade does is it lowers Jason Campbell's trade value. He may be tendered at a first round level but we'd be VERY lucky to get a 3rd round pick for him now. A 4th or 5th round pick is more likely.

Well, looking at the bright side of things, he usually does play well at Fed Ex.

Now, where does the line form to help JC pack his bags?

What was the alternative? Clausen better than McNabb next year?

Tebow better than McNabb?

No thank you.

We now have a real quarterback. It has been a decade since we could actually say that. How excited do you believe D Thomas and the crew are right now?

McNabb is a pro. And with Shanny? We actually have a potent passing attack.

Even if we now move to get Bradford, this is a win/win. We are better now than we were two hours ago.

Shanny with Elway. 34
Shanny with McNabb. 33

It wouldnt surprise me if they still get a QB in the draft.

Apparently the Redskins tried to unload Haynesworth -- and/or Landry -- as part of the trade for McNabb.

Not surprised. Haynesworth no longer fits in this scheme of ours. And Landry, well, is Landry.

I have been away for a few days and come back to this.....wow!!!

I am in shock right now. McNabb is definitely better than Campbell and I think we landed a darn good QB with minimal compensation. I have always liked Campbell, but I have found myself fantasizing winning games ever since hearing about McNabb. At 33 years old, he can still play and hopefully Shannahan does not expect him to win games single handidly like the Eagles did for so many years.

I know it is easier said than done, but if we can add two solid book end tackles, then we may have a chance this year. I am 50/50 on whether or not McNabb will be traded again. It could happen. Somehow move up to #1 in the draft for Bradford. Who knows really. Whoever saw this move coming?

One thing that I know as well as every other Skins fan out there is that Campbell's career in Washington is over.

After finding out how McNabb pretty much strong-armed the Iggs in order to get dealt to the Skins, I'd say his chances of being traded again are slim and none. Like it or not, he's our QB for 2010.

I'm just hoping we can get SOMETHING in return for Campbell.

Everything is on the table right now. Just think about this for a second:

4th rounder for JC. Our conditional pick for McNabb next season is taken care of.

Names like Al(unlikely imho), Landry, Cooley or Fred Davis, Carlos.

We may actually end up with two first round picks this year, and a team rebuilt overnight.

This is huge. No more living on past glory. We actually mean something again. This could be the greatest offseason in history.

It's not a stretch to say there are a few guys on pins and needles right now.

Not sure about 2 first round picks -- Haynesworth has a huge contract, and who else would be worthy of a 1st round pick? -- but don't forget about our army of over-the-hill running backs. They can't all make it through training camp, can they?

It would have to be a package deal of some sort.

But names like Cooley, Carter, Rogers, Landry and JC in some combination could certainly garner us more high picks.

I love the aggressiveness of Shanahan here. And that doesn't even begin to mention the fact that our divisional games actually mean something again--something more than us simply hoping to ruin their playoff dreams. The Skins/Eagles rivalry just kicked into another gear.

This is absolutely huge. And for those thinking McNabb is too old:

Peyton Manning is eight months older than McNabb. Is Peyton a fossil?

Favre is 7 years older.

Warner did wonders in Arizona for many, many more years than where McNabb is right now.

We have a franchise quarterback. When was the last time we could honestly type such a thing?

Anyone a little bummed that the 2010 draft hasn't happened and we've already traded a 2011 pick away? Think we'll ever have 7 or more picks in a draft?

We'll get that right back when we trade JC.

All we have really done is use our second round pick on a proven, "sure thing" QB. Low-risk move by the team here.

see ...i just dont get this take.

i have the opposite view....this just put us in the ULTIMATE cat seat. we can STILL get one of the top rate O linemen...trade down....or trade up with donnovan as bait with the rams.

I just don’t see this happening Mugsy. If it is really a 3 way trade, why not just pull the string now? If the Rams want DM that bad, why didn’t they just make a straight up trade with Philly for him? After all it’s not like we gave Philly a player they coveted, we gave them draft choices which the Rams also could have done.

Maybe Shanny is thinking that all McNabb needs to put him over the top is a running game, just like his running game put Elway over the top. So we market Campbell for a 3rd or 4th, let our space cowboy backfield handle things this year and concentrate our draft on the line and the holes in the defense both this year and 2011.

It could work I guess.

Bleh. Another high pick for another old guy. Wonderful.

Didn't we do this exact same thing on '04?

The more things change the more they stay the same.

Please define "old" Henry.

I guess Peyton Manning is old? He is 8 months older than McNabb.

Manning has started every single game of his career. Every single game. He's a freak of nature.

Favre is 7 years older.

Another freak of nature. Besides, at this point I wouldn't trade a second rounder for him either.

McNabb is not freakishly durable. He's played a full 16 games once in the past four years. Mere mortal QBs his age generally start to fall into backup roles.

Warner did wonders in Arizona for many, many more years than where McNabb is right now.

When Warner came to AZ at the age of 34 (the same age as McNabb) we went 2-8 as a starter. The next year he went 1-4. The next year he went 5-6. And this with the best WR tandem in the league in Bolden and Fitzgerald for 5 years.

2004. We traded a third rounder for 34 year-old three-time pro-bowler Mark Brunell.

"Old" is probably a little harsh Henry. He really isn't old compared to the others above. He is very experienced, and a proven winner in our division.

And I don't believe anyone considered Brunell as a franchise quarterback. Except possibly Gibbs 2.

The careers and success of Brunell and McNabb are apples and oranges.

We had three choices as a team:

1. Continue lying to ourselves that JC was a starting NFL qb.

2. Take a gamble on Bradford or Clausen, and possibly have to give up a lot to get Bradford.

3. Use a second rounder on a proven winner, with likely many good years left. The conditional pick next year can be lessened by a trade of JC for a pick.

Solid decision making imho. Low-risk, and we didn't give up much at all. We still pick fourth in this draft.

How so? What's the big difference? Brunell was an experienced, proven winner too. He was a franchise QB too.

A second round pick is a lot. Especially for a 4-12 team that should be in full rebuild mode. And not just any second round pick, but the 37th pick overall. That is a steep price to pay for a guy that may be here four years, five on the outside. A huge price. And that's if we mitigate the 2011 pick with getting something for Campbell.

I'm not convinced McNabb has a lot of good years left. Maybe he has a couple. Warner did eventually pull out two good years after the age of 34. Maybe McNabb will too.

And hey, maybe he'll have a few Elway years. That would be worth a second round.

But let's not pretend this is a low-risk move. This has to pay off immediately or it was a waste of a pick. (God that sounds familiar. I'm sick of saying that about this team.)
