PFT: Donovan McNabb is headed to the Washington Redskins

As I listened to the story on the radio on the ride home tonight, I joked with my sister (almost as Redskins' obsessed as me) than TO was coming next to get reunited with McNabb. :insane:

The more I read and from what I have seen of Okung, he is the best available, but read up on Bryan Bulaga. Iowa ran the ZBS and watching Bulaga dominate the potential top 10 pick from GTech DE Derrick Morgan in the Orange Bowl in January, I like him. A lot of draft boards have him going to KC at 5. If Suh or McCoy were to fall to us, a team could be willing to move up for them leaving Okung to the Chiefs and leaving us an opportunity for Bulaga, Williams or Davis plus an extra pick. I would really like to see Bulaga in a Skins' uniform. If he waited another year to become eligible for the draft, he could have become a top 3 pick.
 
You know I really want to give this new front office and coaching staff a chance but moves life this one really don't inspire confidence that this team gets it. In dire need of a youth movement we've replaced a young QB with a guy who turns 34 in November. He's better to be certain but that could be a curse more than a blessing in two years because odds are good we don't wind up in a spot to draft a top flight QB in 11 or 12. So we've once again secure years of misery in the name of winning now.

It seems that the Redskins will never attempt to build a dynasty style franchise it's one bold move to make a run after another. In between those runs are periods of misery in which the ancient roster just can't hold up.
 
I tend to agree Destino, but I think we need to wait to fully assess this move. There may be yet another shoe to drop, whether it's moving McNabb and other players/picks to the Rams, or to another team to acquire another first round/early 2nd round pick to get a young QB. Maybe Shanahan really likes McNabb and this is just wishful thinking on my part, but we won't know for sure until draft day.

see ...i just dont get this take.

i have the opposite view....this just put us in the ULTIMATE cat seat. we can STILL get one of the top rate O linemen...trade down....or trade up with donnovan as bait with the rams.
 
Yeah, I can see this move backfire big time. But it's way too early. We haven't even seen the Redskins run one play yet.

They gave up very little to get a player like McNabb, so for now, I'm still relatively positive about the move.

I absolutely HATE this move so I'm REALLY hoping another shoe will drop.
 
Of course I just had to complain about the off-season being boring, nothing interesting going on, nothing to get us Skins fans all in a tizzy about, nothing to start long thread debates and emotional roller-coastering. Where was all the off-season excitement I'd gotten so accustomed to?

I'll post something in a bit about "The Trade" but right now I'm just gonna let the dust settle a bit, ruminate over the possible implications, which at the moment seem numerous, and remind myself....be careful what you wish for...:juggle:

I don't think that can be stressd enough. A 2nd rounder this year and 3rd/4th next isn't 'nothing', but given McNabb's credentials, that's a steal. We're pre-disposed to hate losing any draft picks, but we immediately go from a huge question mark at QB to a very capable one (even if I don't like his act :)). If this is part of some larger scheme to make noise in the coming draft, even better. But its hard to argue we didn't get value. And although McNabb has some miles on him to put it mildly, at 33, he's hardly washed up. He could play another 5 years.

I'd agree with you if McNabb were a free agent we just signed. Unfortunately this position came at a high cost, a 2nd round pick and a 3rd/4th next year. That's realistically two young starting players on a team that is aging fast and known for it's utter lack of depth that's a huge price to pay. HUGE. We have no depth at linebacker. We have no starting tackles on this team. We have three over the hill running backs.

It seems to me that the best teams trade guys while they can still get value... the rest are the Chiefs trying to glean the last bit of magic off of Joe Montana. They have a few years where they look better and then collapse again when the price catches up with them.

Now there is a lot that still needs to be sorted out here. If McNabb gets us to a superbowl it was a worthy trade. If we get Bradford WITHOUT giving up next years #1 then it was worth it. If we get 5 years out of McNabb maybe it was worth it.

On a positive note consider this: We're going to have a Shanahan run football team with a a proven QB under center and a load of talent on the roster. There is really no telling how much of an upgrade this move represents. Think of what the Vikings receivers looked like prior to Favre's arrival. Thomas, Kelly, and Moss might look like monsters next season. McNabb always did like tight ends and we have two GREAT offensive weapons at that position.

I'm wondering if the revamped defense can improve a bit... if it can the skins have the weapons to make it interesting. Suffice it to say that regardless if we keep DM next season will be a heck of a lot more fun than 09 was.

I just heard an interesting side note. On ESPN News, it was mentioned that Elway was a year older than McNabb is now when Shanahan took over in Denver. I know it doesn't really mean much, but it is interesting.

Huge upgrade immediately.

Finally, the JC pain is over in DC.

I would have preferred Bradford, but McNabb still has 3 good years left in him.

McNabb's health behind our O-line is a huge concern.

His age is not a factor IF he's healthy.
 
I don't like the opinion that the Skins can "win now", which many are assuming why they took McNabb.

The O-line is in shambles. Our secondary has serious issues and we're changing schemes both on the offensive (somewhat) and defensive sides of the ball.

But what's done is done and I hope McNabb can get it done here and the Skins build an O-line to protect him.

As for this being part a for another super-mega trade with the Rams for Bradford.....if we have to give up more picks and a proven (yet old) QB to move up for Bradford.....I'm not ruling it out (stranger things have happened like the Eagles trading Mcnabb to the Skins) but is Bradford worth our 1st, Donovan Mcnabb and our 37th pick.....really? Same with the thought that this is setting up a major trade with the Bears for Jay Cutler. Is "the mope" worth that much?

I'd say no on both counts.
 
This move isn't as bad for the Eagles as I had orginally thought. They have a whopping 11 picks in this year's draft, and Kevin Kolb has looked strong when he's gotten playing time.

It definitely has the potential to be very, very good for the Skins, but the Eagles may not be hurt too badly overall.
