PFT: Washington may be in the Mariota business

The problem is, to run read option as any significant proportion of your offense, you have to have, not just an athletic QB, but one with a sense of self-preservation and one who can make great near-instant decisions consistently. I love the reckless Griffin we saw in 2012, but that guy can't survive that style of play. I also think the injuries have damaged his psyche - he frequently appears frozen looking unsure what to do. I think he's stuck knowing what his gifts and instincts say to do, but fearing injury (rightfully so) if he follows his instincts. And I have not seen a ton of evidence he can be a starter using another style of play.

I hope he turns a corner this season. But what I think we'll see is more struggles, more challenges staying healthy, and the Redskins moving on - and that's assuming they aren't already trying to work a deal to unload him.

bingo!

I think there is potential but agree with all of you that the statute of limitations is running out on Griffin. the last three years of drama have created many of these problems - Griffin's detachment the rest. I just want to see a coach who works to get the best out of his players and perform his level best to use the talent on hand to greatest advantage - not straight jacket/pigeon hole the scheme to suit his identity, ego, etc., etc.
Well, I think it's fair to say we all want that.

What I observe around here lately is that some are absolutely convinced Gruden didn't do everything he reasonably could last year to do just that. We have no objective evidence--zero--that he didn't work his little white butt off every day 24/7 from the day he got here to try to get Robert up to speed on the basics of a real NFL passing game to incorporate into the hybrid offense a guy like Robert could and should be expected to run.

No, I don't have any objective evidence of that, either ... but I do have common sense on my side of the equation. No NFL coach heads into minicamps and training camp and the preseason without exhaustively putting his putative starting QB to the test. There is no conceivable benefit for a coach--particularly a rookie--to try to "hammer a round peg into a square hole," as so many are wont to say.

Serv, no stat gives a complete picture.

Having the 13th most yards, with what some (incorrectly) believe is a bad O-line, and three pedestrian QBs is an accomplishment. That's a good offensive system.

Now if we could actually recognize when a WR is wide open, and throw the ball to him......we'd have a few more points.

The thing is, you said the same thing about the Oline last year. They changed 2 starters and moved another one to a different position. And no matter what QB we have used, they are in the 5+ sacks range in multiple games. I know there are stats you can find to say the Oline isn't that bad. We can also find some to say it isn't that good. Stats lend themselves to excellent cherry picking, and at the end, we still see that our pass-pro isn't very good, and that our runs on 1st down suck compared to the rest of the league.

I'm sure to respond to your image that you keep using about one play where receivers are missed, I can have a play where I make a gif of our QB being taken down in about 2 seconds. It's one play. It does show an issue, but it doesn't prove anything than that there was a busted play. That needs to be fixed, for certain. But to hang your argument on one play is rather silly, just like cherry picking a single stat to say there is or isn't a problem.

Shi....what may be surprising is that there are at least 10 others like the one above. And all in a period of only a few games.

I'm not sure what else certain units/individuals/players can possibly do.

Oh well, let's hope we see improvement.

Perhaps what any stat that has the Redskins rated that far ahead of the Patriots in 2014 is really telling us is that the stat itself is flawed at best ... utterly irrelevant to winning football at worst?

Is that the same game?

Single handedly the worst game he's ever had? Cherry picking things to support your stat isn't cool.

Analysts, stats and results would suggest that the O-line is average to above average. And that the system is very good.

Results would suggest there was very little on the team last year that was anywhere approaching average to above average. Including coaching, OLine, etc.

cmon now...how do we get from 13th in total yardage (caveated by Serv's thoughts and the knowledge that when a team is behind defenses play soft) to "that's good offensive system"?

as for recognizing when a receiver is open...you mean like the long-yardage passes to DJax that pumped up the stat you luv? see...it's easy to cherry pick!!

3 years in a row of making the playoffs against some of the toughest defenses in the league would suggest success, consistency and an offensive system that works.

I'm not sure how many decades we'd have to go back to point to that kind of success in Washington.

O.K., I'll accept the premise that a 13th ranking of total offense is indicative of a good system.

During the 2013 season the Redskins offense was ranked 9th in total offense with 5915 yards total offense- 4 spots higher and 177 yards more total offensive yardage than 2014.

The Redskins were ranked 23rd in points per game at 20.9 also-3 slots and two points better than 2014.

Would that then be sufficiently indicative of that team as having an even "better" system?

Oh, it isn't surprising. I saw Griffin playing crappy last year just like everybody else. But him playing badly does NOT exonerate the line from their issues. With our record, I'm fairly comfortable saying they both sucked.

Yes. Or that players were more familiar with the 2013 system after operating it for four seasons among other factors--strength of schedule, etc.

Both systems (in the top 50% of the league) were above average compared to their peers and showed the ability to move the ball.

my goodness! you just established that Redskins offensive football actually declined under Jay Gruden's system! stats don't lie :) bring back the Shanahans...

except at the goal line...3rd and medium to long.....and so on and so forth

Serv was right the first time: one stat doesn't capture a nuanced concept like "good offensive system". ironically...take away DJax and that yardage drops significantly.

Man, if we still had Ladell Betts, we'd be in our second year of Super Bowl 3-peat!

OK, Romo is impressive for an undrafted player and Griffin is disappointing for being the second overall pick.

How's that? 😊
