let's press gents/ladies....this one will be resolved in training camp/preseason.

in a separate dept....or moving on to other not entirely on target subjects: I never get the feel that Gruden is an "all in Redskin". you never really hear him talking abt our history, brand, etc., with any sort of emotional conviction.....like it's what comes first and last for him. maybe he was just overwhelmed by his first season. but you don't hear that sort of leadership messaging from him.

Our history? You mean twenty-something years ago?

Fan, you know the feeling you get when you see the Dan Marino jersey at the end of the bar on a Sunday afternoon? Do you actually want to talk football with that guy?

How about a Jim Plunkett jersey? Do you think they know football?

I and many others disagree with you...many others. Indicative of the whole. I always enjoy someone making the claim, "No matter how many times you say it". You keep saying the same thing too...doesn't make you anymore correct than I.

While I firmly believe rg3 has every right to social media, I sure wish he would see that he can't ever come out positive while engaging in it. Just leave the shit alone and enjoy all the perks that come with his career that most can't enjoy. Leave the regular mundane stuff to us hoi polloi

I get the mindset pov....on the part of the fans. you are right. I'm talking abt the coaches. win/lose or draw......among leaderships' missions is building the culture, instilling loyalty, submerging some individual instincts into the abstraction of the "corporate" personality. in this case, the "corporation".....is the team. I would argue that it is precisely in periods of uncertainty and under-performance that appeals to the past matter most. the Skins were emphatically a team of excellence and achievement in the past. these are not values that change with the prevailing winds. just saying that even absent references to better times.....I don't think Gruden is all that invested in the Skins as an enterprise with 70 years of history. I don't think...at least from a distance...that he himself has the mindset one would want the players to demonstrate. it's subtle. it's the difference between "let's win today" and "let's win to restore the tradition and pre-eminence of this Super Bowl winning franchise". Just reflecting that somehow....Gruden doesn't strike me as steeped in the Redskins as a team with traditions, a proud history, etc., etc. He wants to win....no doubt about that. where he wins....may not be all that important when he does his personal rank ordering.

simply put...and it's just my take: he doesn't strike me as passionate about our franchise. he's in it as a job. he's in it to win....as a marker of professional excellence and personal accomplishment. but the Redskins? they just happen to be the vehicle of the moment. is he a George Allen or Joe Bugel kinda Redskin? make up your own mind.

almost forgot: the players (or a lot of them) will follow the coaches' lead...even in this age of "me first" players.

Again, I'm talking specifically about a twitter exchange here, so if you think I'm speaking to more than that, then I wasn't as clear as I should have been. I couldn't believe that people were using that as anything at all. You answered my question, and I should have left it there. I find it amazing the reaches that people make, especially when there's no reason to. Oh well. I'm looking forward to something real to talk about.
 
Gruden was considerably overmatched his first year. Nothing seemed to go right from the get go and confusion seemed to reign.

Part of this is the result of not having a GM to help provide structure and work on the roster.

Most GMs pick their coaches and have a vested interest in seeing them succeed.

I don't think McCloughan would have drafted Murphy or Long early on or sign Jason Hatcher to a free agent deal.

I also think he would have found a way to deal Orakpo's rights and recoup a second or third round pick for him and avoid tying up $11M in cap space on a frequently injured player.
 
random memory:

for the time that I could stomach dialing in Comcast: saw a clip of Pat Fischer....drum roll...tackling Riggins when he was with the Jets. pretty cool clip. typical Fischer...went in low/submarined...lifted the RBs legs and flipped him (more or less).

Somebody tell me again how 2nd & 3rd rounder's are expected to be 1st year starters.
 
2nd and 3rd rounders become starters in camp. They must beat out who we currently have, and from my perspective, they should. Oherwise you are drafting for backups, and failure. Ideally, you want a roster of "starters" who must backup and therefore provide you depth. "Next man up" doesn't mean plug and play. It means the backup must start and perform like a starter.

And I say draft a middle rounder for QB. As far as I'm concerned we are back to square one with looking for the franchise QB before this team can compete. But I don't want my next "franchise" guy to be drafted first or top ten, then is annointed the starter. I want my middle rounder to become the franchise guy through his performance and because he won't start right away, he can learn a little first without all the high expectations. Griffin was annointed the franchise guy without earning it. It had to happen that way, but I don't like it. Now we are where we are. Trying to find out what to do with him. By bringing in a middle rounder, then bring him along, and hopefully he will prove himself. When he makes the starting lineup, due to injury or performance, he won't be so raw. I want Mclovin to find the next Brady in a low round. Even Wilson was not the projected started out of the draft. He earned it in camp. Let's get a guy who earns it, then we'll see results.
