Cheatin Bill is certainly a great coach in terms of winning. But...among the greatest? What is he associated with as a football mind (ala Walsh) that numbers him among the greatest ever? He's 3-2 in SBs. And the Pats have been in a weak division forever. Seems to me the core strength of the Pats has been the organizational structure they set up. Don't know what role Cheatin Bill played in that.

Now that we're thinkin about it: how should this person be looked at from an ethical pov?

This is what I told my wife after the Packers/Seahawks game today...

Am I off base in having that cross my mind? I could not imagine having to go through what Packers fans experienced today after getting so close to the Super Bowl.

I think I would not have the will to want to watch football the following season.

I'd give him a 5 on a scale of 1-10 in terms of predictions. Maybe a 6.

Today's events are a pretty good example of why I'd give him a 5 or 6. And that's a pretty good rating. Meaning that in the 8 years or so that I've read his predictions, 50-60% actually come true.

Well, given the healthy cynicism BGO members display toward the reliability of sports "journalism" I have no worry that this will disrupt things much hereabouts.

I didn't say anything about overlooking it. But discounting a GREAT coach's achievements because he's a 'cheater' is ridiculous. You hate him - and it's coloring your assessment. I'm not taking anything away from the legendary Joe Gibbs, but the '3 QBs in 3 Super Bowls' argument is overblown imho. We could also look at 'who were the strong teams' and lots of other factors (including a strike-shortened season, key injuries to other teams stars, etc...) which may have made it easier for us to win some of those games. Again, I'm a huge Gibbs fan, but he's not in the top 3 greatest coaches of all time. He's just not.

I would be humming a different tune if he'd taken us to the Promised Land in Gibbs II. But I think he knew he couldn't do it and that had as much to do with him retiring again as any of the other reasons we cite (ST's death, his grandson's health, etc...).

Boone, I don't get the argument here. Parsells is the only other coach to win a Super Bowl with 2 different QBs, much less 3. Noll only won with Bradshaw. Landry only won it with Staubach. Walsh only won it with Montana. Belichick has only won it with Brady. Lombardi only won it with Starr. Shula only won it with Greise. Shanahan only won it with Elway.

Parsells won it with Simms and Hostetler, but Hostetler only played the last 2 games of the regular season and the playoffs. The defense and Otis Andersen carried that team to it's wins.

I don't see any way Gibbs winning with 3 different QBs, considering how big offense was to the Skins (we aren't talking about dominant defenses here), can't be a major talking point as to how great he is.

I didn't say it wasn't a major talking point, but it's not the only talking point. It takes more than a great QB to do what any of the coaches in this discussion were able to do. And my position is less about denigrating Gibbs and more about those minimizing a guy like Belichick's accomplishments.

Dude has won a ton of games and showing ZERO humility doing it too. Shit I still hate them for the 52-7 run up on Gibbs.

Funny that you say this because I don't see him as arrogant. For him it's another day at the office doing his job. I have never seen him gloat or get excited over a win like Carroll or Harbaugh. He is steady and even keeled.
