Random Commanders Thoughts

I'm okay with the three firsts. Not bringing that up for any reason except that we were gambling with the franchise QB. Colt, not so much.

I'm just going by the eye test. At halftime of that Seattle game, RG3 looked like toast.

On the first drive last week, McCoy looked pretty healthy in comparison.

Big gamble when you risk the health of the franchise QB. Gamble not only monetarily--even if already paid--but also in terms of what other players may want to come play with him in the future.

At halftime of that Seattle game, or at latest in the fourth quarter, RG3 was visibly limping. Not in good shape.

Colt looked pretty good physically prior to being knocked out last week. At least to me.

As others have said, you really can't compare a knee injury to a neck injury.

Or upgrade the Oline in the offseason, run with Griffin next year and see if he develops. Make a change after getting an Oline together that can keep a QB alive. Not of the guys you listes is worth a look. Jameis is a headcase and the others are not worth serious effort, IMO.

If we trade up to draft Jameis, I swear I may be done. Not only because the dude is a headcase who has incredibly poor judgment, but also because it would be neglecting, yet again, the OLine, which we cannot afford to do. We've already sacrificed one QB behind our piss-poor excuse of an OLine, why sacrifice another one?

1) I have posted about discipline, etc., many times - the stuff a coaching staff is ultimately accountable for.

I had a long response on stats. will skip it and head for the punchline: stats, the way you use them, are descriptive. they aren't explanations. they can be used to support an argument, but then the burden is on you to establish relative weighting. no one is denying multiple factors are in play - the kick is in how they inter-relate and which dominate. throwing stats against the wall to see what sticks isn't a causal analysis.

here is what I will acknowledge: this is a fan blog and everyone is entitled to an opinion. there is no unwritten rule that we must post doctoral level theses to express a pov. we'll all simply have to be content with our respective perspectives/opinions and not worry too much about the rest.

That I can agree on. I also agree with Coach Parcells, who famously said....."I don't coach penalties".

Correct. That's another part of the question. Or more specifically, do you want to invest a lot of money into a rookie pocket passer who has already had two major knee injuries?

There are only a few alternatives: Draft Jameis, trade for Sanchez or an also-previously-injured Sam Bradford, start Colt or Kirk, or draft another in the middle rounds.

Yes...especially because this team and the NFL in general enjoy such a terrific track record in developing QB talent generally. by all means...I think we ought to dump talent quickly as possible and work a volume concept. then again...I hold the same belief for coaches as well!

On the first drive last week, McCoy looked pretty healthy in comparison.

Disagree. McCoy does not have a cannon but on that first drive he was just not getting much on his throws at all even by his standards. He bounced a couple of balls and it just looked to me like he was far from 100%. We cant put percentages on it and I agree that the decision to keep RGIII in against Seattle was much worse but McCoy should not have been playing against the Giants either IMO.

So the band is coming back.

Gruden and Griffin on a do-over in 2015.

My gut feeling is neither is the answer we need.

But Snyder owes Gruden $15M in guaranteed salary and dropped three first round picks for Griffin.

I guess this drama has to play itself out like the Haynesworth situation in 2010.

Sports owners and executives would rather continue to suffer than admit the mistake.

I actually like the decision. We need to stick to our guns a little longer than we used to & see where it leads us. Patience has been the key. It needs to continue to be. In a time where patience is wearing thin, I know. But, I like it.

yup. play the string out.

1) This is it for RGIII - he either learns to anticipate and lead receivers...or he's done.

2) Gruden better learn how to coach at the NFL level. He's allowed, I guess, a year of OJT.

We have been too patient and slow to move.

The Redskins should have tendered Orakpo and traded him for a second or third round pick in 2015.

The team should have cut ties with Moss and Robinson at WR at the end of last season. Neither contributed here in 2014 after showing they were spare parts in 2013.

We came into camp in 2014 with four of the starting five OL from last season despite the unit being a continuing trouble spot.

The safety position has been a mess for 3-4 years.

We could afford Orakpo, afford to sign Shawn Lauvao and Jason Hatcher but we ignored safety because the options were 'too expensive'.

Ironic because a credible case can be made that the team overpaid Orakpo, Lauvao and Hatcher to begin with!

I don't see value in many of this team's transactions.

Free agents with the exception of Jackson are frequently disappointments.

Draft picks are often slow to get on the field despite the gaping holes in the starting 22.

The discipline and accountability isn't there week to week.

The Giants game was a joke. 10 penalties, veterans being thrown out for touching the refs, a rookie cb getting 4 of those penalties and saying he has no regrets, the botched onsides kick after the half, etc.

I have seen enough of the Gruden movie.

He can't manage a 53 man roster.

Same issue that usually causes successful coordinators and assistants to fail at the next level.

They are used to working with a limited group of players in one or two units and depend upon the HC to maintain structure and discipline.

That's why Norv is a great assistant but a failure as the head man.

does every point you make have to be compounded with the same point about Orakpo?

Seriously. Its to the point where you have said the same thing now in no less than 3 threads. I don't think anyone disagrees that the Rak signing was a bad move but it shouldn't be your springboard move for every single post just to add something negative.

Well, Mike the problem is when the failure to shore up many positions of need is brought up the team comes back and talks about the limitations of the cap.

But it's not really the cap but our management of it that is the issue.

When you have $13M invested in 3 aging defensive linemen - Cofield, Bowen and Hatcher - for 2014 there isn't a lot left to acquire younger FA that can help us.

There, I made an argument about the team's choices and never mentioned #98.

Oh, I get it. I just dont get why you hate the signing of Rak but dont get that we didnt have any other option at the time. Nobody was out there and he was up for FA. We signed him to a 1 year deal to keep him here and he is as good as gone now. There was no safety option out there to go with except Clark who nobody would guessed was going to fall off as much as he did.

The cap HAS been a huge issue for us and now that it is over...hopefully the problems with getting depth and quality will be as well.

I think sitting him down actually did Griffen good we might not win but he will play better
I dont see everyone complaigning about the decision to franchise Orackbo?

I'm not furious about the Orakpo call. It's only one season. I think it was worth franchising him to find out if we need him or if we cut him loose. I think it's pretty clear now we cut him loose unless he signs cheap. Franchising him really wasn't a bad move long-term - yeah it was a lot of money but no cap ramifications or obligations past this season.

If Rak will sign for cheap I'd be willing to resign him, to put ON the line. Depends on if Olivatti wants to run a 4-3 tho.

Don't know what exactly would be fair, $3M per yr? Idk

@MarkMaske: NFL told Redskins 2 of Breeland's penalties shouldn't have been penalties? Now, if only 6 of Beckham's catches shouldn't have been catches.

I'd like to find the details of this. Jeff Triplette's crew strikes again.

Breland is a keeper. Liking his play more and more every game. Long time player on this roster.

What do we do with Murphy? He's one of our better d-players now. but he simply isn't much of a force as a pass rusher. like how he has developed in run defense. Not sure where he should play. either move him to an inside LB position or find some d-line players with pass rush capability to compensate for Murph's lack of speed/quickness in that regime.

Safeties? first blush is sack the lot....but overall secondary play makes me think bad coaching plays critically in all of this. first priority is get rid of the DC and secondary coaches. then....draft secondary. not convinced on Amersun. he seems to get beat to the inside a lot.

d-line? aging. no pass rush. no one stands out in my mind. replace ALL of them over the next couple years.

lbs? Kerrigan. check. robinson check. murphy. check with caveats. the rest? ummmm...nope.

I dont know if we NEED Murphy to be an elite pass rusher in order for our defense to be successful. In fact, with the way Kerrigan has been playing, the argument could almost be made that Murphy's MORE valuable NOT being AS effective in the pass rush, and focusing more on run defense. I agree that in order for it to still be effective as a whole, we need more pressure generated from the line and from blitzing, but if Murphy is above average in Rush defense, I'm more then happy with him being out there, even if he is middle of the road when it comes to a pass rush.

We also can't forget that Murphy has been matched up against LT's which are arguably the best O-Linemen in the game... he's a rookie facing the anchor player of the O-Line... he's got time to get better.

Cooley made a pretty convincing case yesterday that Breeland will be a top five corner for years to come, and that when Hall gets back they should make him the nickel corner. Amerson is okay but he is nowhere near aggressive enough IMHO. He seems to play scared to me, laying off receivers way too much. If we get Hall back and draft a stud safety (could be our first pick), we could have a pretty tough secondary.
