Wouldn't exactly be the first time this team had put in someone whose health was questionable. Why do you mess with someone with a neck injury, though? I don’t care what the team doctors say, especially with the season essentially over, you just don’t take that sort of chance. This is a neck we’re talking about.

So the band is coming back.

Gruden and Griffin on a do-over in 2015.

My gut feeling is neither is the answer we need.

But Snyder owes Gruden $15M in guaranteed salary and dropped three first round picks for Griffin.

I guess this drama has to play itself out like the Haynesworth situation in 2010.

Sports owners and executives would rather continue to suffer than admit the mistake.
 
Two different situations imho:

1. RG3, 3 firsts, one second and was visibly at like 25% or less when he went down that final time without even being hit.

2. Colt, no picks. Appeared to me at least to be 75% or better.
 
Those three first round picks weigh around our necks like the anchor of an aircraft carrier.

Look, those 2 things you 2 just brought up have nothing to do with now and the future. Haynesworth is gone and we haven't overpaid for anyone since then. As a matter of fact we have had players (Hall) cut and re-sign for cheap just so they can stay.

Those draft picks are gone...they've been gone. That has nothing to do with 2014 or the future.

And, McD, how can you say that an injured nerve in a neck is 75% better after 3 days?
 
I'm okay with the three firsts. Not bringing that up for any reason except that we were gambling with the franchise QB. Colt, not so much.

I'm just going by the eye test. At halftime of that Seattle game, RG3 looked like toast.

On the first drive last week, McCoy looked pretty healthy in comparison.

Hoping Bruce isn't coming back in the same role.
 
Griffin is under contract...there is no gamble when you have already paid for the product.

on the first drive? That is when he got hurt. He was obviously still injured if one sack knocked him out so badly that he is now on IR.

I'm not sure what eye test you are taking here but at the end of the first half against Seattle we had been up 14-0 and running it down their throats at will. The end of the first drive against the Giants Colt was sacked once, injured, and Griffin came in to go 6 for 6 with a TD.
 
Big gamble when you risk the health of the franchise QB. Gamble not only monetarily--even if already paid--but also in terms of what other players may want to come play with him in the future.

At halftime of that Seattle game, or at latest in the fourth quarter, RG3 was visibly limping. Not in good shape.

Colt looked pretty good physically prior to being knocked out last week. At least to me.
 
It's just my gut feeling. Bellichick was a very mediocre coach in Cleveland with no inkling he was going to go on to the success he has had in NE.

Gruden could surprise us I just think it's unlikely. To me he doesn't seem able to manage a 53 man roster. There's too little discipline and accountability.

With Griffin, yes he can be more effective if he rolls out. But are you going to run an offense that features a moving pocket as the staple over 16 games?

At what point does Griffin have to learn to play the position as Rodgers, Roethlisberger, Manning, Brady, Brees and the others have done to be consistently successful?

And if Griffin is moderately more effective in 2015 using that style is that good enough to win it all down the road or do we still need to upgrade?
 
oh, so it just matters how far up on the depth chart he is to determine if you risk his health or not?

Colt looked like he had hurt his neck and was injured against the Rams and magically 3 days later was "cleared" to play. I don't get how you think it is OK or that he was OK when he was clearly hurt to the point where one sack put him on IR and off the roster completely.

RGIII should have been pulled after tweaking his knee against Seattle. That's a given, especially as well as Cousins played that year. McCoy may have looked healthy, but who knows what he was shot up with or anything of that sort before the game. The same time, you just don't mess with anything the neck and up. All it took was a stiff breeze and boom... season over.

The only thing that is apparent is that whatever else happens someone is making sure Cousins never sees the field again.

With the team at 3-9 why was starting Cousins off the table?

I don't see Colt or Robert being ahead of Kirk at this point.

Kirk's biggest problem seems to be that he was the Shanahans draft pick and favorite.

The way this team has been run I wouldn't be surprised if that doesn't factor into who plays.

1. Gruden's been managing rosters for over ten years now. I'm not concerned with that in the least. Even with the DC media and the drama here. He specializes in going into the worst organizations and being successful.

2. Obviously we can't roll RG3 out all the time. Defenses won't allow it, and it cuts off half of the field. It's not realistic. However, he did show great improvement, and that time off on the bench may have really helped his ankle recovery. He's a rookie QB imho.

I think the bigger question is can you really build around a guy who already has two major knee injuries? How realistic is it to think he'll be playing three years from now, and how much money are you willing to invest into it?
 
Several guys have already said it but I don't see the Griff situation against Seattle and the Colt situation this last week as even close to similar. It was obvious to anyone watching that Griff was hurting and hurting the team. Colt didn't appear to be having issues to me, at least nothing worth pulling him for. Griff should have been pulled for being ineffective as much as for protection.
 
Or the question could be do you want to start developing Griffin as a 'rookie' pocket passer at age 25 in 2015 or get someone else that is further along in his development?
 
Correct. That's another part of the question. Or more specifically, do you want to invest a lot of money into a rookie pocket passer who has already had two major knee injuries?

There are only a few alternatives: Draft Jameis, trade for Sanchez or an also-previously-injured Sam Bradford, start Colt or Kirk, or draft another in the middle rounds.
 
Well, based on how Snyder has operated he isn't going to market his team starting a third round draft choice come the summer.

Even if Gruden thinks that pick is the next Joe Montana.

When the team went with a rookie in 2012 it had to be the Heisman Trophy winner.

Jerry Jones is a lot like Snyder. What saved Jones was that Romo had a decent chance to develop under Parcells and be kept on board as an undrafted free agent.

Or upgrade the Oline in the offseason, run with Griffin next year and see if he develops. Make a change after getting an Oline together that can keep a QB alive. Not of the guys you listes is worth a look. Jameis is a headcase and the others are not worth serious effort, IMO.
