Drinking the Kool-Aid, is it a bad thing?

Don't get me wrong guys, I'm very optimistic, and excited about the start of the season. We're gonna shock the shit out of the football lovin world this season, but I'd normally have my game day gear laid out already, menu set, the lawn mowed, and the beer cold. I don't even know where my game day jersey is.....

AS for the topic, if Kool aid translates to reality, I'll be glad to drink it in. While many may piss and moan, we've actually done well in setting this team up for success. Even with the questions in the secondary, which even there our options are looking better with the signing of "Nacho", the D is gonna be a force to reckon with. If Robert doesn't try to do too much, and lets the games to come to him, we're gonna score a lot of points. Gruden will have much to do with that, and if he can make Dalton look as good as he has, given a season or two, he'll have Robert a QB that every D will dread playing against.

So, fill my glass, the Kool aid is fine....

And then, to top it off, I'm hearing unbridled optimism from McD5. I'd have to have developed an immunity to the most basic of human emotions to not be fired up at this point! Bring on the Texans! Clowney and JJ Watt? PPPPPPPPPffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffttt with Spurrier-style slow motion!

As for this thread, I am actually a bit more optimistic than usual. Looks like we are going to have a good defense this year, running game should be at least as good as the last two years and we have increased the overall level of talent on the team.

That said, still will come down to the play of our QB just like with most teams. RG is clearly going to be better than what he showed in the preseason. I just hope he has progressed to a level that will win more than just some games this season.

Have you ever been to a strip bar where the dancers were uniformly fugly? Leave a lotta tips did ya?!!!!

1) I like intelligent, hard fought football. I'll take a loss when it is well played.

2) I like a sense of promise and expectations about to be fulfilled. The first game meets that emotional state. What happens afterward drives the happy/frustration curve. Dumb is dumb. Smart is smart. winning is good.

Optimism is a healthy place to be - especially at the start of a season. renewal and redemption. detaching one's self from reality..at some point...becomes a dangerous self-deception...IMO.

There's a difference between expecting better....and bagging on a team one has followed for decades. in my professional life....performance, in the end, is what counts.

btw...it occurs to me that we should run directly at Clowny all game (unless he's doubled over Watt).
 
Oh, that cruel devil of uncertainty plagues me again as I try to figure out where on the kool-aid ingestion spectrum I might be. So much potential, so much more talent than I've seen on our Skins roster in quite a while clashing with the nagging questions that won't just disappear in a mist of homeristic "Hells yeah we're gonna straight-up kick a**" optimism.

New coach, new system, new infusions of "OMG!" talent that my mind whips into a frenzy of "Check this out Skins-haters!" beat-down scenarios as the season opens. Damn, I want to submerge myself in that warm bath and kick back and relax and watch the mayhem the Redskins deliver to unwary opposing teams game after game.

This time the uncertainty, unlike the resigned whistling-in-the-dark bravado that I settled into over the last several years, is going in a different direction. Now the uncertainty is about those pesky "nagging question" that kept hazy clouds blocking the brightness of the new day. Is it a new day-or season, if you will-for the Redskins? A lot of it sure looks like it and now I find myself questioning the questions.


I'm not soaking in that hot-tub neck deep just yet but my knees are already immersed and I'm sipping from a glass of kool-aid that tastes better than it has in a while. :)

In the end, I guess that's the eternal contradiction being a fan of a sports team presents. We all want to win so badly, but there's no guarantee we will. So are we a fan of winning, or a fan of the team? I think most of us will say the latter, and that's when the realization must kick in that winning shouldn't mean so much as to make us lose hope when it doesn't occur. I get it. Oh so well, do I get it. You & I are very much alike on this subject, from one pole to the other. I am optimistic & hopeful; a fan of the team. I was crushed by last season. I have never - NEVER - walked away from the tv at halftime of a Redskins game KNOWING it was already over & there was no point watching any further. But they fell so hard, so fast....I just couldn't watch anymore. And top that with the incessant need of the ever pessimistic who feel it is their civil duty to not only shove their POV down everyone else's throat, but then to rub it in when things go sour with taunts of "I told you so" throughout an already devastating season. As if, somehow their being right made it all better for them. A bizarre moral victory for them that they have to share with the world.

However, a new season rises from the ashes of burning memories. I didn't just light a match & throw it on the pile of last season, I doused it with kerosene & took a flamethrower to it. Last season is just that. Last season. So, it will stay there. Dead. Burnt to ash. Nothing. Today, Open Day Eve, I sit here with new optimism. I watched thru pre-season &, despite the pessimistic, I saw what I wanted to. Roberts legs are back under him & the weapons we have....oh the weapons we have. We could very easily have the 3-headed monster we have been needing to make this all come together. The D-Line looked stout throughout pre-season & was getting push up front. Something they have lacked for a long time. I'm excited.

I am aware that being as excited as I am today could punish me tomorrow. It could be that my B&G glasses will never allow me to see this team as anything BUT the best thing since sliced bread regardless of the final outcome of each season. But I can't help it. I am a kool-aid drinking fool. I love my Washington Redskins & whether they suck every year or win it all, I'm a fan of the team. Regardless.

I'd like to add that I was starting to worry that all my fellow Redskins faithful were turning. Not against the team, but against the idea that being optimistic was...ok. But in the less than 24 hours I have been here, & seeing so many people that I haven't seen in years & the overall feel I get from this community...dare I say? I'm home. This is what it's SUPPOSED to feel like being a Redskins fan going into the season, chumming up with old friends, guzzling Kool-aid with reckless abandon, looking forward & not behind...oh yeah, this season is going to be GOOOOOD.

Man, I can't tell you how much I have missed everyone that I am seeing here. Bring on the Texans indeed. The Redskins are gonna surprise a whole lot of people this season.
 
I've been a fan longer than most have here have been alive. There were years you knew were going to be bad.

Like many I was spoiled during the Glory Years. I expect my team to win every week. I hate losing...at anything.

I am not asking for Super Bowl every year. All I want is a competitive and consistent winner.

Pete...my game day jerseys are ready. Adult beverage assortment I are chilled and ready. Now just give me a W and I will be happy.
 
My son and I were talking about the season yesterday and he told me that our lack of success must be his fault. You see he was born in August of '92, seven months after our last Super Bowl. Even though he is a Florida boy, born and raised, he has steadfastly remained a Redskins fan despite all that has transpired in his lifetime. (I chalk that up to inspired parenting, others might call it child abuse.)

This new season, this new beginning, brings with it the hope that a new exciting chapter is about to be opened.

Let's go, Skins. Do it for yourselves, do it for those of us pining for a return to glory, but most importantly, do it for those who have been loyal and faithful despite having no real reason to be so.
 
Love this thread! Glad that ES thread sent me here too. It was starting to feel 'weird' getting jacked up for the season, haha. But don't get that vibe here.

After a looooooong wait, the Skins take the field TOMORROW!!!
 
Y'know, here's one thing I really want to see this season....and, so far I have reason to believe we will. I want to see a coach and his staff that manages a game properly.....and is smart enough to modify game plans mid-stream. I want to see a coach who, like Gibbs, can make the necessary adjustments at halftime and come out with newfound drive in the second half. I never felt that any of our last batch of staffs over the years had this ability.....I have high hopes for Gruden. He seems to have a mind for the game.
