Hasn't Hocker had more distance on kickoffs as well? If he keeps it up I'm down with keeping the rook. It's not like the cobra wouldn't get snatched up immediately. Then probably go to the pro bowl with our luck.

Edited for JohnssBass....stupid autocorrect is supposed to be helpful, lol.

Knockoffs? Win4us, are you a writer for the Times? :doh1:

I still like Cobra Kai - all day long. But I know I'm in the minority.

I'll take either really as long as whoever we pick sets a record for most extra points made in a year.

Some speculate that because he's pressing on the kickoff part that his 'swing' is getting out of kilter all around.

If he loses his job, that's all on him. Those errors, in pre-season, are going to make it hard for the coaches to stick with him. Only thing I'll say about pressure is that we know how Forbath handles pressure in real games (how many straight did he kick his rookie year?) - we know nothing about how Hocker will manage it.

Who's saying that? Because even if it's wrong, it's still a good theory.

Ingraining a new movement into your muscle memory takes time - conventional wisdom is that it takes between 3,000 and 5,000 repetitions, and if you try to rush the process, you can just make it worse by memorizing your mistakes. And injury is always a concern:

Here's what Chiefs kicker Ryan Succop (the jokes write themselves) had to say:

“We’re kind of like pitchers,” Succop said. “A pitcher can’t go out and throw every day. If he goes out and pitches every day, his arm’s going to have all kinds of problems. We’re kind of the same way. We try to put a number on how many reps we hit each day. It’s really quality over quantity. I can’t go out and kick 100 balls every single practice or I’m going to run into all kinds of problems.”

So even if Forbath can get in 30 good, full speed reps per day (normal range for a kicker), we're talking months before he's got a swing he can rely on, and we might see him kicking well (for somebody else) next year.

So our best hope is that he adjusted his swing last March, and he's just an extra cup of coffee away from being Morton Anderson.

I wonder if kickers get that incentive included in their contracts?

Coach: "Forbath! Where you going?"

Kicker: "Going out to kick an extra point, Coach."

Coach: "But we haven't scored yet! It's only first down!"

Kicker: "Oh, that's a rule, now?"

The local media, thus the word 'speculate'. It made sense to me because of the muscle memory thing. Bad habits can imbed themselves when trying to change the 'swing'.

Kai knows he needs to get more depth with good hang time on his kickoffs so he must be doing something to reach that goal.
I believe he's been working on it for at least two off seasons so there has been time.

I'm sure the pressure of performing for a new regime who actually drafted his competition ain't helpin' much either.

Hoping that his swing guru can get him straightened out but as you say, it'll probably for another team when he gets there.

If Hocker shows he is consistent and is already long, then it's probably his job for the taking.

Was it ancient astronaut theorists? Sorry I've been binge watching history channel.

That does make sense though. That and maybe a little less wear & tear on Hocker's leg due to youth. If the kid keeps on nailing kickoffs and FG's we almost HAVE to take him IMHO.

Hasn't Forbath been the most accurate kicker in the league over the last 2 years? If we cut him it will Akers part deux.

I thought we were insane to get rid of Gano. But the truth is, we had so many losers on ST last year that he probably would have sucked. Now he's doing great. Often times it seems that these kickers need to bounce around a little.

As far as Kai goes, the accuracy hasn't been a problem. No one questions that. Kickoffs stopping at the 5 yard line is the problem.

If we could find a kicker that could get a TB on every single kickoff, we'd never need to worry about kickoff coverage breaking down.

Painfully, I believe Gano leads the league in that department.

In 2013, the Skins were 24th in the league in opponents average starting drive following a kickoff.
That needs to change

Quite frankly that is higher than I would have guessed. I would have thought somewhere in the 30's.
You're right - has to change.

They were dead last in average punt return yards allowed. And #30 in average yards per punt. Yeah, that's last for net yards per punt.
No matter who they take at punter this is going to get better.

Between the two - they really put the D on their heels last year.

I think some of those stats are very misleading. You might be talking about a 3 yard difference separating top teams from the worst. Just sayin'

My concern with Forbath has to do more with leg strength on FG's than it does kickoffs. I really don't have a major problem with a kicker dropping KO's at the 5 yard line if the coverage team is worth a soggy damn. My impression from last year was that our problems in opponent's starting field position had more to do with breakdowns in lane integrity, angles and just plain physicality than in how deep the kicks themselves were. No way to substantiate that though, so maybe it's just that--an impression.

My real reservation about Kai is his range on FG's. Anything 45 yards and up and I'm covering my eyes ... I've seen plenty of stats breaking down FG's made in 10-yard increments (20-19, 30-39 ...) but don't recall any breaking it down to 5-yards or less. Anyone?

Well, as far as the punts go - 11 yards separated the Skins from first on net & a 7 yard separation on average between them and first. A lot of room for improvement.
