Washington Times: Hocher Has The Upper Hand On Forbath

My concern with Forbath has to do more with leg strength on FG's than it does kickoffs. I really don't have a major problem with a kicker dropping KO's at the 5 yard line if the coverage team is worth a soggy damn. My impression from last year was that our problems in opponent's starting field position had more to do with breakdowns in lane integrity, angles and just plain physicality than in how deep the kicks themselves were. No way to substantiate that though, so maybe it's just that--an impression.

My real reservation about Kai is his range on FG's. Anything 45 yards and up and I'm covering my eyes ... I've seen plenty of stats breaking down FG's made in 10-yard increments (20-19, 30-39 ...) but don't recall any breaking it down to 5-yards or less. Anyone?

Haven't seen one in 5 yard increments. But here is a link that lets you plug in various stats like kick kickoff average start, FGs made/attempted; touchbacks, ect and generates charts.

Don't know if it helps but might be more interesting than looking at a bunch of numbers. Plus they are in one place.

The kickers are still battlin'

•Rookie Zach Hocker missed a 33-yard field goal that skidded off the right upright, but did make a 39-yarder on his next attempt. Veteran Kai Forbath made both of his kicks, a 30-yarder and a 38-yarder. Forbath did a better job on kickoffs, with both of his attempts having 4.0 seconds of hangtime. Forbath had a 3.8 second hangtime on his second kickoff. On his first kickoff, he stuck the ball just over the goalposts.

I'm more concerned with what the kickers do in preseason, than what they do in practice - since one of the biggest questions is how they handle "real game-time scenarios" and "pressure situations".

Obviously, that's within reason, with the exception being if one kicker is just completely bombing in practice

It may be the pressure of potentially losing his job that's getting to Forbath more than game pressure. I think Forbath has shown he is a pretty cool customer in live action. How many in a row did he make his rookie year for God's sake? Hocker has proven nothing in a real game.
