What Position Do the Redskins Draft at #34?

I really am getting tired of hearing all the comments about not having a first round pick and opportunities being limited to have an impact draft.

#34 is TWO slots away from being a Day 1 selection.

If this FO is worth anything we will come away with a player there that makes an impact in 2014.

Second rounders to me are the best value in the draft. You often get first or close to first round talent for half the price.

One of the things that prevented Shanahan from developing capable depth was failure to make an impact here.

2010 - pick traded for McNabb
2011 - Jarvis Jenkins
2012 - pick traded for Griffin
2013 - David Amerson

That's two mulligans and two players that are still question marks.

Since I don't want to be unfair we can include the worst draft in team and possibly NFL history in 2008 under Cerrato when Washington failed with THREE second rounders - Thomas, Davis and Kelly.

agree with BT that we should find a starter. guess the issue is what position. from mocks I have seen.....there may be as many as 6 OTs or more taken in the first round. BPA strategy leads me to think OT is not where we look.

I can't see anyone on our roster starting at ILB opposite Perry Riley, who is only average and not capable of covering for another's limitations. At the same time, I am thoroughly unconvinced we have made any genuine upgrades on the OL. Moving Licht to center will help slow down a few stunts, but most of the hits RG3 was taking were coming from the interior rather than thru Polumbus - though I'd still be ecstatic if we managed a solid replacement for him.

question: so there is some talk the LT from Al will drop to the 2nd rnd because of his knee injury. Heard Casserly talking about it today. He said lotta teams wary of this. Then, he stated, given how free agency works....you might draft him anyway in the second round since contracts are only good for 3-4 years anyway.

Called in and talked to Gil Brandt on The Sirius NFL Blitz yesterday and he seems to think that we'll take Joel Bitonio OT from Nevada @ 34 if we don't go defense. Brandt raved about his versatility and that he could play almost anywhere on the line.

Brandt also pointed out that he faced both A.Barr and D.Lawrence this year and didn't give up a sack to either.

What scheme are you referring to Ryman - I don't think most fans can claim to know much about what kind of scheme Gruden plans on running. Anything anyone believes at this point is just a guess.

CinCity ran almost exactly the same number of plays last year but with a lot more running and splitting that up fairly equitably between two backs. Skins can't keep giving the rock to Alf 300 times a year; that's how guys go down and it happens in their fourth year. (Peterson, Foster, MJD). Chris Johnson didn't get injured but his numbers fell farther than the prom queens skirt starting with that fourth year. Unless they feel comfy handing off to Helu another 100+ times a year than they have been, I am interested in seeing what and when they might do during the draft with an RB.

What scheme? I dunno. 60% passing play's (Skins last year) I kinda doubt it.

Looking at it closer, using my expert analysis, which involves looking at other people's public top 100 lists, I now more than ever want to see BPA with the 34th pick. And that BPA does not include QB, RB, WR or RT. It looks to me like a solid right tackle will still be available at 66. I think they can come away with two starters with their first two picks, the second being a right tackle. I'm now very curious to see who will be available at 34.

This would seem to make the trade back argument even more interesting. If a starting-caliber RT can be found in the early third round, surely starting-caliber secondary and linebacker can be found in the 2nd.

It at least looks that way from this side of the draft. And as has been said, any trade down would require another team to see someone at the top of the 2nd round that they felt worthy to make a trade for. That team would also have to have the ammo to make the trade and not be worried about Atlanta's pick. The 49ers are the only team with two 2nd rounders currently.

They have 2 2nd rounders, but they also have an early 3rd that could be in the mix...

How 'bout the Rams? Could be interesting as they have 12 picks already. They have two in the 1st (2,13). If they trade down on either of those they already have decent spots in rounds 2-4 (12,11,10 respectively) and wind up with something in at least one of those rounds 2-4 most likely. Better spots than the 9ers in 2nd (24, 29), 3rd (13,30) and 4th (29). Yeah I know the 9ers have a third pick in the 3rd but I'm not counting comp picks cause you can't trade them anyway.

Atlanta/Rams trade for #2 not far fetched in the first round depending on what planet Houston does. Birds have 6,5,4,3 in rounds 1 through 4.

With a draft as seemingly deep as this one, I think the draft pick trade chart goes out the window. I really don't think we would get the value we normally would should we trade down. I also think we'd have to give up something like a fourth rounder, in addition to Cousins, if we wanted another 2nd round pick. Teams will be willing to make deals but they won't even remotely resemble anything lopsided in our favor. Since Captain Kirk is learning a new offense right along with Griff and McCoy, how valuable is he really when thinking long term?

The reason I bring this up is I think it has a bearing on how we approach pick #34. If we could somehow nab an additional 2nd round pick, would we be more inclined to move down from #34? Would we keep it and pick someone we weren't originally targeting in the 2nd, knowing we could get the original target several picks later?

Pretty fascinating when you think about it. Having all that time after the first round to set things up presents so many possibilities.

Don't see it as very likely at getting an additional 2nd rounder but ya never know. Vikes could be interesting, in terms of drafting down in the second. They are @ #40 so not a huge drop and they also have a 2nd third rounder (#32 of the third) that they might part with to inch up.

It'll be interesting to see what the other teams do day one trade-wise. That #34 spot might be real special to more than one of them.
