What Position Do the Redskins Draft at #34?

It's the 2nd pick of Day 2. Unless someone has slipped that the FO REALLY, REALLY wants, I expect they'll be entertaining offers to trade down and THAT would be my preference. While I understand the desire for a RT, I don't see anyone available at #34 that could easily jump in and start from Day 1. That's why I think the RT comes later.

While a receiver or TE wouldn't really surprise me, I fully expect the pick to be a Defensive player if we DON'T trade down.

I'm the category of trading down bu that's always contingent on finding a trade partner and how far back does one move into the later rounds if we do decide to trade down. I think it will be more interesting to see what Allen does with the gloves off this year, maybe we'll find a later round pick that can actually play.

so many opinions on who or what to do and everyone has a valid point, that's why I love reading what great minds have to say on BGO.....personally I still would like a great Safety with a pick (it don't have to be @ 34) on Defense to make coming across the middle scary for recievers..a sideline to sideline guy .. someone to come up in run support ...but can't be upset whatever we do...you don't always find the franchise or great player in the first two rounds ...I am ready for September already...HTTR

Good point. However, I was thinking more like a new hybrid - the returner who is also the kicker. When (or if!) tackled, it would result in an additional 15 yard roughing the kicker penalty. Most players tend to avoid close proximity to kickers anyway.

One most really over-think these things to become this delusional. Is there an emoticon for a Spaceball? Think I'm in line for one...

that's true. unless you have a shutdown defense that is keeping the other team's offense to 3 and outs and demoralizing the opponents. works both ways.

I agree with your larger point. My take, given present circumstances, is that the NFL is a pass happy league...and our greatest weakness continues to be the secondary. I would think that even with all the competing arguments about a stellar pass rush masking secondary weaknesses.

as for o-line. if we draft an ugly in the 2nd rd - fine by me. I don't think that's necessary and would place the priority on drafting harder to find skill players in the higher rounds. but...either way....the team improves.

When we say BPA, how does OUR definition match up to that of the FO? As far as the FO is concerned, BPA might very well be the guy who has a high grade, fills a need AND is considered by the coaching staff to be a good fit.

While we always say we want a coaching staff that "adapts" to the players, there HAS to be give and take both ways. Some guys we deem to be the highest rated might not be a good fit with what we want to do.

Other than QB, RB, K and P, I really wouldn't be too surprised by ANY position we fill at #34, or wherever we end up picking.

While I'd really love to see a guy like Dee Ford fall, I'm pretty sure the guy we end up with will have a first round grade, at least according to our FO, and unless we trade down several spots.

I would like to think BPA takes into account how the player fits our team/scheme/locker room and isn't just based on combine-esque metrics.

This team has made enough moves this offseason that I think we can take the guy with the highest upside (and lowest downside) that fits our team/scheme/locker room at any position. We need quality guys added to every spot. QB and WR are probably the only spots that would be the exception (as long as you categorize all linemen as O and D linemen)

Some better Special Teams play will help also. Redskins were dead last in both offensive and defensive line of scrimmage starts, granted one has a direct effect on the other. A long field for the offense means they are probably running more pass plays than they may like and a short field against the D allows the opponents to take their time with more high percentage plays, especially when the Skins are playing from behind.

I have jested earlier about a kick returner but I really don't see a guy on the roster right now you could point to and say, 'That's our man'. DeSean can do PRs but obviously a risk of injury comes along with that. I don't think Roberts has ever been a return guy but maybe he can fill the void.

Roberts returned kicks and punts for Arizona, but I don't think he was anything special at it. In fact I remember reading he was somewhat mediocre, but I am not sure how accurate that is.

I'm torn between BPA and trade-down so far-which is why I haven't voted yet. Several excellent points have been made so far in this thread which leads me into a pleasant level of uncertainty.

The general consensus seems to be that this draft's talent pool across the board is deeper than usual and the fact that the Redskins have so many areas in which a legitimate argument can be made for a needed upgrade that BPA carries a lower risk than if we were "set" in all but one or two positions. Prioritizing these needs in a less talent-laden draft would be more difficult which also makes a valid argument in favor of trading down to get more picks if the talent pool is as across-the-board deep as most seem to be saying.


Yeah, I'm hedging but it seems that this draft is set up for a team like the Redskins in their current multiple-need position-with a lower probability of making an altogether wrong choice.

The draft being as volatile and changeable while it's going on with surprises like sudden drops by first-round talent out of the first round, the ability to have a lot of flexibility in selection making, IMO, works in the Redskins favor. I rather like the developing scenario for the above mentioned reasons.

The problem with trading down in a draft like this one, is that it becomes a buyer's market. You don't get as much value for the 34th pick, because 33, 35 & 36 are all likely willing to trade as well.

Teams would still obviously get more picks, because there's an inherent value difference, regardless of talent level, and some would argue more picks is always better than fewer picks. I dunno, I just hope they get who they're targeting, and they fill a need.
