Rogers couldnt catch because of his vision issues. he goes to SF and gets the Lasik we had been begging him to get and goes off making INTs

I don't recall his vision problems being public knowledge until after he got contacts/lasik and started catching ints. People asked what changed and he said that.

I don't recall the redskins begging rogers to get his vision fixed. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention at the time.

Hrm. I guess that's where we disagree, we have different opinions on retention problem vs talent evaluation problem.

To me they were saying he can't catch ints, and completely ignoring the fact that he was a solid cover corner and we needed him. Ie: we evaluated his talents wrong, or maybe a better way of putting it is that we prioritized his talents wrong.

If we valued his covering skills more than his int ability, we could have easily kept him.

Henry is correct. Found this in a Bleacher Report primer on the franchise tag-

"Teams are only allowed to name one franchise player per year, so it's imperative that any team using this tool does so with great care."

Listening to NFL Radio this morning, Ross Tucker said the team can remove the franchise tag at any time. They have up until July 15 to sign the player to a multi-year deal before the terms of the franchise tag kicks in.

4. Franchise tags can be withdrawn.

The amount of the franchise tender becomes fully guaranteed once the player signs it. Since signing the franchise tender puts the player under contract, requiring him to show up to all mandatory offseason activities and training camp, some players choose to wait deep into the preseason before inking the offer.

The risk is that the franchise tag can be withdrawn, at any time, before it has been signed.

It doesn’t happen often, but it’s not unprecedented. Especially in Philly. In 2002, the Eagles pulled the franchise tag from linebacker Jeremiah Trotter in early April. Three years later, the Eagles removed the franchise tag from defensive tackle Corey Simon in late August.

The move immediately converts the player to an unrestricted free agent. But if it comes after the big money has been spent, the player will have a hard time getting the pay day he would have realized on the first day of free agency.

9. Long-term deals can be negotiated, through July 15.

Previously, the window for a team signing its franchise player to a long-term deal closed not long after the free-agency period started and then opened again on July 15. Now, the window remains open until July 15.

After July 15, the franchise player can sign only a one-year deal with his current team. It can be for more than the franchise tender, and it can include other terms, like playing-time or performance triggers that would prevent the tag from being used again.

But the duration can be no more than one year.

Maybe I'm way off the mark here - but generally speaking I thought players hated getting franchised tagged unless they thought a deal with the team was close. Otherwise they're wasting an opportunity at a long term deal - they're risking their value being downgraded due to poor play or, even worse, injury. It's the essence of being in a 'contract year' or 'playing for a contract.'

He was supposed to be a free agent. He played for his contract last year. The end result is now that he has to do it again.

Orakpo said himself - not too many guys get an opportunity to go into FA in their prime.

By all accounts he could have acquired big time money over a long term this offseason. In fact, the entire argument about Orakpo was not over whether on to keep him, it was over how high one was willing to go to keep him. We've seen everything from 7-8 mil a year up to 13 mil a year. He was one of the best pass rushers available on the market according to most. His timing was as good as it gets - he's young coming off a rookie deal with a lot of hype around his potential.

If he gets injuried this year he'll miss out on it. If this idea that Haslett and company were being handcuffed for four years doesn't pan out and Orakpo has yet another 8/9 sack season more people may start to wonder if he's an elite pass rusher worth investing top dollar in. Plus he'll be a year older.

60 million over 5 years > 12 million for one year.

Of course, he could have a 20 sack season and get even more money next year. But to me it seems like generally speaking people would rather lock that up now instead of trying to go through one more year of proving yourself.

By using the non-exclusive tag, another team can sign Rak to a deal, providing we agree to compensation. We're allowed two 1st's. If anyone in the league is dumb enough, we'll take it.

We would probably take one 1st, and a 2nd, or 3rd. But i doubt that would be offered either.

This isn't done yet.

He might get tagged but he's not required to sign it.... he could essentially sit out the season. Like I said in another thread, we have to tread lightly.. After '14 we've got BOTH our OLBs becoming free agents... we can only tag one.

which is why one of these guys needs to be signed to an extension over the next 6-10 mos.
