Random Commanders Thoughts

I like the idea of Hank, Lanky. I really do. But right now I don't trust him to stay healthy.

Like I said, I'm not nearly as high on him as I was last year, but I think he can still be productive. He played all 16 games last year, so it's not like he's never done it...

Very true, he has done it. But not finishing 2 out of 3 seasons is a bad way to start an NFL career. Remember, the most important "ability" an NFL player can have is "avail-ability".

Not that I am saying we toss him away yet. The young man is talented, no question, and I think he has a roll to play here going forward. At least, I hope he does.

Hankerson still has not shown consistent hands or an ability to use his size to make plays.

He looks like a #3 or #4 receiver to me until he shows that improvement.

The Redskins desperately need a productive skilled receiver to play opposite Garçon who doesn't have all these question marks.

If only this would come to pass. One can dream. :(

Warren Buffet on Redskins

“You know, when I was a kid, I thought if I ever made a lot of money, I would go out and buy a team,” Buffett said. “I was a water boy for the Washington Redskins for two games – I lived in Washington at the time – and I thought if I ever had a lot of money I’d buy the Washington Redskins.”

I remember when there was hope in 1982 that Cooke would be able to buy the Caps when Abe was having financial problems.

Unfortunately the rules wouldn't allow for cross-league ownership.

And we dealt with 20 more years of Abe shorting the Caps enough talent to win anything.

It was more causation than dreamation.

Stating a fact moreso than a wish, so to speak. :)

Riley is entering the final year of his rookie deal - I would imagine that an extension for him will be one of the first orders of business for the new regime.

Don't shoot the messenger...

Hearing a few rumblings about who could be released. Early names are Carriker, Chester, and Bowen. Savings would be about $14 mil and place the cap at about $42 mil under.

I could live with those guys gone but I too like Carrike,r though injuries are getting the best.

Suppose we could resign Bowen on the cheap, if we absolutely/positively need a d-lineman.

Doesn't mean we couldn't re-sign any of those players for less...thinking mostly of Bowen, provided he could get healthy enough for a rotation. Carriker? I'd like to see him on our team, but can he stay healthy? Chetser? GOOD RIDDANCE!

In a couple of weeks, the BBQ blog will start to focus on FA and the draft.

Another update in addition to what was posted last night.

According to Tandler, here are five FAs that the Redskins are unlikely to sign:

Jarius Byrd, S
Jimmy Graham, TE
Branden Albert, OT
Eric Decker, WR
Aqib Talib, CB

We are 46 days away from FA and 105 days until the draft.

Unlikely to sign? Because they are asking for too much money, or due to lack of interest from Washington?

Most, if not all, will stay with their current teams (franchise tender or sign before the market opens).

I hate the franchise tag system. Yeah, i know we may benefit from it too, but it really reduces the quality of available free agents. And even if it allows us to hold onto a player we like a little longer, i don't like that players are here because 'they have to be'. Id much rather we know a player is here because he wants to be.

Bowen and Carriker can't stay healthy while Chester is a backup quality player at 31.

I look back on it and we always seem to be digging through the Ravens discard bin for players.

Wilson, Chester, Beck, Cundiff, etc.

We need to realize that Ozzie Newsome is a super GM and while he may miss on some guys you are unlikely to get rich dining off his table scraps.
