I'm probably on an island, but the more I read about Fangio, the more I like him as a potential head coach (granted I haven't seen many SF games this year.) From the articles I've read, he seems to do a great job of preparing the players including offseason conditioning, great gameplanning, and great gameday calls and in-game adjustments. He seems to be able to consistently manage through injuries and FA departures at times relying on undrafted guys and lower key FA signings (including a guy like Glenn Dorsey who had never previously lived up to his draft status.) He seems to have mastered preparation, coaching guys up, putting together solid gameplans and has also surrounded himself with really solid assistant coaches (not sure if he was the one who decided to bring all of those guys in - if so that's a very important trait for a head coach.) He's had a top 5 defense in SF for the last three years, and his defenses have at times (including earlier this year) compensated for the struggling SF offense preserving SF's playoff hopes. I could go on, but I'll just reference a couple of quotes about him that stood out to me:
49ers Coordinators Work Together
"Just as the players work together to better themselves and the team, the coaching staff works together in pursuit of the Lombardi Trophy. For, Fangio, there’s
never been a problem with egos getting in the way of the greater good."
Y! SPORTS
"...Coach Vic, he’s as super quiet guy, but he’s very smart. He’s a guy that -- he won’t toot his own horn. He won’t, but he is unbelievably smart.
"I can honestly say that he is a guy that when he puts that game plan in front of us, there is no doubt that he didn’t go through it and thought about every single thing that he’s put down. He’s thinking. Another thing I love most about him is he doesn’t – every now and then he gets heated – but for the most part he doesn’t. He trusts us out there on the field. He trusts in his players. Sometimes you might not have a good series of tackles, but he’s always going to stand behind you. He’s constantly always showing us that believes in us. He’s the kind of guy you want.”
