2014 Coaching Search Rumors

As mentioned earlier, lots of rumors about AJ Smith not being a GM candidate because it would severely limit coaching prospects.

Where has any team source said or indicated they plan on hiring a 'football GM'? I have seen nothing that leads me to believe this is in their plans.

As far as I'm aware it's just speculation/desire.

I don't think anything about plans other than firing Shanahan has been attributed to team sources.

Given Allen's reputation as a contract guy, it makes it a really interesting question of who is going to be making those decisions...

I would hope that would be a question asked today at 2 pm...

Is there a specific reason a coach wouldn't want to work for him? I honestly don't know much about him.

I don't know. But he was on staff at San Diego, and fired Marty Schottenheimer when he was 14-2.

That's all I know about him.

Chris Russel with more Cohwer rumors:
The Redskins have met with Bill Cohwer twice so far. At least twice.

By The Redskins, he means Dan Snyder has met with him at least twice. No idea of Allen was part of the meetings, though he thinks he would have been.

I think this article pretty much sums it up. He sounds like the player personnel version of Snyder. Add to that the fact that he actually hired Norv Turner as HC and it all adds up to a "Hell NO!" IMO.

...Turner was Smith's signature hire. He inherited a 14-2 team and reached the AFC Championship Game his first season, but the Chargers began a gradual decline. Their last playoff win came after the 2008 season. Their last playoff appearance was an embarrassing home loss to the New York Jets after the 2009 season. The next night, the Chargers announced a four-year contract extension for Turner.

Spanos had twice sided with GMs over coaches. In 1996, he forced out Bobby Ross and kept Bobby Beathard just two years after the Chargers reached their only Super Bowl. In February 2007, Spanos fired Schottenheimer because of a "dysfunctional" relationship between the coach and Smith. The two reportedly didn't speak to each other for the previous two years.

This time, both coach and GM -- who have always been linked at the hip -- were dismissed.

Smith proclaimed Turner to be the "right coach at the right time" for the Chargers. When Turner was hired, he was 24 games under .500, having gone 49-59-1 with Washington from 1994 until being fired with three games left in the 2000 season, and 9-23 with Oakland from 2004-05.

Kirk Cousins on coaching changes:
".... I'm sure Mr. Snyder and Robert will have a lot of say into who is picked."

Appreciate the article Yusuf, sheds a little light.

Tshile, is that true or something u found or typed? If that's true then there's a heap of issues on this team needing remedy.

But Al, the mismanagement of the money we did have suggests a poor ability to get better players. Just look at his overall body of work which includes going back to his days as the VP in Denver. Bowlen and he are said to be very good friends...Bowlen fired his very good friend because he would not relinquish control and he was not so good at building a team.

Shanahan GM is poor and no amount of money was going to change that.

bubba...you may very well be right. but I stick by my position: we'll never know because the cap/personnel situation here was hosed before and during his tenure. part of the problem was not having enough resources to go after top tier players (as well as depth - biggest problem this team has); another problem was sacrificing all those picks for Robert (hopefully, ROI lies down the road); the rest is a mix of bad Shanahan decisions, crappy talent, poor coaching, etc., etc.

btw...at least for the moment....and despite what the media is saying about a circus in DC...this coaching turn-over seems less theatrical to me. Shanahan knows the record wasn't there. Snyder hasn't done anything left fieldish - to date. though news that overtures were made to the Stanford coach months ago puts a different spin on things.

anywho.....reset the four year clock!

About cousins?

Yeah, it's true. They just played the audio on ESPN 980. I may have mixed a few words because I'm typing from memory, but that's essentially what he said. He went into a long winded answer (as he normally does) about how he wants to play for a good offensive coach, blah blah blah, (just company line stuff) and then he ended it with that.

I'm sure it wasn't a dig at anyone, it certainly didn't sound that way and it doesn't fit his personality (that we know to date). I doubt he has any actual insight. Likely just a slip of the tongue.

But I agree... I'd prefer a 23 year old with 2 years experience not be picking the head coach....

Oh okay, I probably need to hear it cause it reads like a dig at Robert. At least I read it that way but I haven't had my morning Rockstar yet either.

I don't think Kirk Cousins would take digs at Griffin. I think he's more of a company man than that. I think it was an interesting slip of the tongue and nothing more ;)

Allen Presser:
in going out and getting Shanahan:
"4 years ago, we thought we did the right thing..."

Tony Wyllie will release a list of fired coaches this afternoon.

Some coaches will stay on staff, incoming coach will make decision about them (i'm sure the Allen guys all stay, shocker)

They'll start the coaching search this afternoon...

Allen keeps saying "we" in picking future coach.

No mention of GM roles yet...

First question was about power/control

Allen said he'll retain control/power.

Looks like our new GM is Bruce Allen

Hope he officially takes that on, someone needs to be accountable above a coach. We know it won't be Snyder. This feels t much like Vinny/Snyder. Though Bruce is light years ahead of bug eyes.
