Happy hour starts in 5 minutes
Alright, have a bourbon day coming up Sunday. Larry is coming over and we're gonna try Garrisons. Also I've been trying other types of spirits as you can see with the Irish Whisky and Scotch, and Rum I've been talking about.

This weekend I have acquired a bottle of Ilegal Mezcal Reposado. It's a drink similar to Tequila. Both the Mezcal and Tequila world has started developing complex aged products meant to be sipped straight. So her we go!! Gonna give er a try. I'll let you know the outcome.

I see the label says it's from Oaxaca. Seems that name is attached to another fondly remembered "spirit" from my youth. ;)

As to the bourbon, I'm still slummin'.

Picked me up some Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve last weekend.

Amazing how it's smoother than the regular, even with the 120 kick it has.

Still liking the Rowan's Creek best, of all the ones I've tried so far. But this KCSBR is purty dang good too.
 
Ok here's the rundown.

The Garrisons was a pretty decent new bourbon. On the pluses for me were the smoothness. Incredibly smooth for its age. The negative was the wood. Had a pretty overpowering wood taste for me. This brand has promise for the future.

The IIlega Repasado Mezcal was outstanding! The term we used the most was refreshing. Has some lemony citrus notes finished off by a mild pepper flavor. Ver very smooth. Probably the best Tequila/Mezcal I have ever had.

We then finished of the day with some BTAC which is as always the King of Bourbons.


Oh yeah, got some more possibly VERY good news. Larry has the in to an Estate Sale of some friends of his family that has TONS of BTAC and other bourbons they just want to get rid of because of the difficulties of selling alcohol. She did a quick count and they had 24 bottles of Weller. Said they had a lot of Stagg and ER17 too. We are gonna make an offer on the whole lot. Being friends and the fact they want to dump the alcohol I think we have a good shot at scoring a lot. Maybe all. If so BTAC will keep being a staple at the home tailgates. Keep your fingers crossed!!! I am.

Yeah, I've found a lot of variation from bottle to bottle - I just bought one, and it was good but not as good as the one I sampled a few weeks ago, and tasted pretty different. I think the major heat/humidity fluctuations in TX can really change the flavor.

Interesting that you note the wood flavor as overpowering - I've yet to get a strong wood flavor, again suggesting a difference from even barrel to barrel.

From the Belvenie15 and the Garrisons I'm starting to think you may not be very sensitive to the smoke or wood notes, or maybe you like them. Which is a good thing for you, gives you a much wider array of stuff to pick from.

To much smoke or wood and I'm done. lol

Its very possible...either that or I've eaten so much barbecue that "smoke" has become normal to me. :)

My friend Larry has acquired a new bottle for us to try, Jeffersons 21. Should be within a couple weeks. Review will be forthcoming.

Tried it last weekend and it's easy a top 5 bourbon ever for me. I have now been able to procure 4 bottles. One is already half gone.

And as a reminder if anyone can make it I'll be here next Saturday.

Ok all you guys local to DC. I would suggest hitting up the Beer, Bourbon, & BBQ Festival I already have picked up VIP tickets for me and my friend Larry so we'll be in attendance. This is a good place to sample a lot of bourbons. This should be right up your ally Travis I think it's closer to you than most stuff like this.

Hope some of you can make it, let me know if you decide to go!

I was super lucky and hit the jackpot today!!!! I was able to pick up a case(3 bottles is a case) each of George T. Stagg and William Larue Weller. Then I found an extra bottle each of the two and a Jefferson 21 to top it off. Best part is all at retail, no inflated prices!!

Nice Haul HOF!!! You definitely made me a fan of the Wellers and Staggs, also, I cant get enough of the Eagle Rare! I love it!

Still a big fan of Blanton's too, though it seems to be getting harder for me to find here lately.
