Sad story That kid was in all the commercials for the last few weeks on CSN.

Very cool that Shanahan lets attending the tournament count towards the players workout requirements.

Looks like players in attendance include: Orakpo, Cousins, Chris Chester, Kerrigan, Royster, Forbath, Golston, and I'm sure there were more

The event has long been connected with the Redskins, and this year the tournament had grown so large that they had to utilize both of the club’s courses to accommodate the folks who had paid for the opportunity to golf with their favorite Redskins players. Those players were more than happy to have the honor.

In 1991 the Redskins opened up the first 5 weeks of the season with 3 shutouts.
Week 1 - 45-0 against the lions.
Week 3 - 34-0 against the Cardinals
Week 5 - 23-0 against the Eagles.

Since then the Redskins have shut out exactly 0 teams.
0

As in zero.

Hopefully we've added a few key players to the secondary, and can generate some pass rush this year. That combined with an offense that teams have to be concerned about, and therefore adjust their own offense, may combine to produce the first shutout by the Redskins in 22 years.

Since the 1991 Redskins only the 2001 49ers, the 2003 Pats, and the 2000 Ravens have had three or more shutouts during a regular season.

The 2000 Ravens with their notorious D wound up with four for the season.

The all-time record-since 1950 at least-is the 1976 Steelers with five regular season shutouts.

An amazing feat to be sure. Unfortunately, rules changes favoring the offense over the past decade have made it extremely tough to shut another team out. Tack on 35 or 40-yard pass interference penalties and kickers who can go almost an entire season without missing a FG attempt and shutouts nowadays almost seem more a product of luck than great defense. Holding the other team to 10 points or less and winning the game makes me "almost" as happy as a shutout used to.

Ummmmm...I'm not all that comfortable with this idea, Lanky-the Redskins have spent too many games fighting for their lives trying not to lose a game where they one time had a reasonable lead and let the other team come back. We need to be able to put teams away and keep them put away.

Fair enough...but the 38-31 victory over Dallas on Thanksgiving counted the same as if we'd not let them climb back into the game.

Also, in today's NFL, its an offense-oriented league. I'd be willing to bet the total number of shutouts has decreased significantly over the years.

I used to be of this mindset, and thought a power run game was good too. Due to rule changes I now think offense(pass threat) is the key. You NEED a great offense, and just not a historically bad defense and you have a chance.

Yep...this past year was an anomaly (two of the better defenses in the NFL facing off); in the past few years teams with abysmally bad defenses have made it to the superbowl on the backs of their offense.

The 2006 Colts, 2009 Saints and 2010 Packers are some of the most recent examples.

Ronde Barber is calling it a career, retiring from the NFL today. Barring injury this preseason, London Fletcher will be the NFL's defensive-iron man all by himself in week one, if he starts.

EDIT: although interestingly, his 240-game stretch only includes 195 starts, something I didn't realize.
