Severe/Extreme/Unusual Weather Thread

Happy hour starts in 5 minutes
I'm on the outskirts of NoVA... seems like it's going to pretty much miss us. Down trees, wind, rain, but nothing like Delaware, New Jersey, and further north...
Only bad thing for us is my wife got put in charge of the command center for the hospitals so she'll be gone for a few days :(
Dog is actually up in MD just past Point of Rocks at training for another week.
So I'm home by myself for a few days :(
 
Just got a briefing on the storm via hurricane hunter aircraft and from a FEMA source. Winds are at 115 mph at 5,000 ft. (surface winds remain the same, for now) - pressure continues to drop. Most roads in the affected areas up here will probably be closed later today.
 
Well, I am gonna be storm chasing later in the day as the storm is ready to make landfall. I am probably not going to be permitted over the Bay Bridge, and I am sure they will likely shut down the DE Memorial Bridge, but I am gonna hit the bay in Annapolis, maybe as far north as the Susquehanna...
 
I'm only fifty minutes from the Del Mem, but would not recommend the travel. It will probably be closing by noon today anyway. Be safe Brian.
 
yeah the bay bridge gets shut down with winds over 45 mph i think?
 
Winds now at 90 mph with a pressure of 943 MB - another drop as it continues to strengthen.
 
DC has basically shut down.
I'm going home to work from home for the afternoon.

Seems like our area is way over reacting to this... I think it's the people much further north of us that need to be concerned.
 
We'll see, tshile. The wind is just now starting to really pick up here. We still have power for now, but I think we'll find out just how rough it will be in the next few hours.

Well, a lot of Northern VA is old so their power lines are all above ground.

I'm far enough out that all our stuff is under ground. If a tree doesn't hit my house I should be fine.

Feel bad for people in Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, etc. They seem to lose power every time the clouds roll through.

Atlantic City boardwalk is almost history - it's just a matter of time. If they need lessons on how to rebuild it for the future and never lose it again, contact Virginia Beach.

Heavy rains and wind here. About twelve hours from landfall.

To a certain degree. It is reinforced with a lot of steel (think rebars on super steroids) and super thick.
 
wind is really picking up here... not supposed to start peaking until 6 pm tonight through 3 PM tomorrow afternoon...

pretty sure a tree in my back yard just defied physics.
