Josh Morgan

I think this asshat deserves his own thread.

Aside from the obvious personal foul penalty that cost us 15-yards (and a decent shot at a field goal), he had a terrible game over all.

There was a 3rd and nine situation in the 3rd quarter I believe; Morgan ran a 7-yard hitch. The first and foremost responsibility of the WR is to know where the marker is! He obviously didn't.

On "the play," not that it mattered much, but he caught the ball, and STARTED RUNNING BACKWARDS. He could have fell forward for the first down, but he ran backwards. Then, he let Finnegan get in his head (the master - he was an NHL pest in another lifetime, I'm sure) and threw the ball at him. Boneheaded, moronic, just plain amateur move.

My personal opinion is that he should be benched at best, CUT at worst. I was against this signing from the beginning, and I'm even more against it now. Terrible game from Josh (on top of the rest of the terrible games yesterday). Ugh.

Aldrick Robinson? Should we cut him for dropping the pass?

Boneheaded play by Morgan, no question.

But let's not overreact.

That was a bone-headed move on par with Westbrook tearing off his helmet and knocking us out of FG range or Gibbs calling a second timeout against the Bills. It will be part of Redskins Lore now, and Morgan hasn't established himself as a good enough player to be able to distance himself from it.

Maybe he'll have a great final 14 games. I hope so. Because he could very well be remembered in this town as the guy who cost us the Rams game.

We're all mad today but he's not gonna get cut for this. MAYBE sat a game but I doubt even that. I'm sure he'll get something but we fans might not know what it is.

On a side note, Robinson needs to do some laps or something for missing that catch. That was a drop of epic proportions, and probably just as costly a bone-headed mistake as Morgan's.

EDIT: Or just go with what Ax said. :)

This is why I don't post for awhile after an incredibly frustrating loss like yesterday's.

As for Morgan, he did have 5 catches yesterday. On the 'running backwards' play, I'm not going to rip him like most have. Although I only saw the play once, it didn't look to me like he had any room to 'go forward' and in my eyes he was simply trying to make a crucial first down play. It didn't work out, but neither did a lot of plays we ran yesterday. He made a stupid, boneheaded mistake that cost us dearly at the end with the retaliation penalty. I'm pretty sure all players have had it happen - maybe not at a crucial point in the game - but it does happen. I don't see how you can argue about how the cheap shots on the field were out of hand, how the officials had let stuff go on all game, and then suggest Morgan should be cut because he lost control for a split second himself? He screwed up and obviously knows it. He'll be the goat until he works his way out of the doghouse. I guess my question is, after we get done cutting/firing all of the players and coaches who screwed it up yesterday, who the hell are we going to have on the sidelines next Sunday? :)

And calling players on the team you love 'asshats'? I don't get that.

Boone, Henry had it right. He has not been on this team long enough or earned the respect to be called anything other than asshat. If you throw a football at a defender in anger, at ANY point in the game, you're an asshat, plain and simple. If you do it in the 4th-quarter, with the game on the line, to knock your team out of field goal position, well....let's just say I didn't want to break the profanity filters, so I stuck with asshat.

Also, you nailed it - its the TEAM I love, not the players. Morgan is replaceable. Let's replace him.

As far as Aldrick Robinson is concerned - yeah, he should have caught that pass. But it was a more difficult play than anything Morgan did (its not like Griffin hit him in stride - he had to slow down, then leap for the ball while turning his body - certainly something every NFL WR should be capable of, but also not easy to do for anyone). Secondly, he didn't get up after the play and throw the football at the defender, so he's got that going for him.

Listen, I was against the Garcon signing, but anyone else think maybe we missed our number one receiver more than maybe we thought we would?

I'd sit him for a week but that is just me. Guys have to think out there no matter who is working on them.

I agree John, the skins win and we're playoff bound. We lose and we suck and the season is over. Its why I avoided this site after the game as well. It just gets out of hand.

Out of hand? You must have been watching a different game. This team and coaching staff deserve every criticism levied against them.

I could go for that. Or, maybe the 1st half next week.
But if Shanny makes him inactive next week, I'd have no problem with it.

Henry's not saying anything different than what I'm saying :)

You're just pissed (as we all are) and are overreacting. The irony is, the same kind of emotional response your having is what got Morgan in trouble yesterday. Coaches get paid NOT to overreact, and that's why they won't cut Josh Morgan for a single mental melt-down. And you ignored what I think is a decent point. Our guys were getting cheap-shotted all day long. You guys can't stop talking about it. But you want to crucify a guy who, in the absence of all that cheap-shotting (or decent refereeing addressing it) probably doesn't lose his composure like that. Not arguing there's any excuse for Morgan's reaction - but I don't understand how you can say all those cheapshots were a major factor in the game, while simultaeously gutting a player for losing his cool once.

I said out of hand talking about the reactions and its the truth. Hes npt an asshat and sorry, but his one play didnt cost the game.

Yeah, he is. He threw the football like a 4 year-old at the big meanie who was taunting him. That's asshattery at its best.

Here's a little something I found linked on ES. I find it relevant:

http://www.sportingparagon.com/wash...ry-observations-week-2-loss-vs-st-louis-rams/

WR Josh Morgan not only pushed a 47-yard game-tying field goal back to a 62-yard attempt with his penalty, but he also lost a chance to extend the drive by attempting to get out of bounds instead of immediately turning up field and securing the first down. How big of an impact could this have been? Well, even if Morgan still threw the ball at Finnegan after the play, the Redskins would have had a fresh set of downs to work with. Instead of being 4th & 16 at the Rams’ 45 yard-line after the penalty, it would have been 1st & 10 at the Rams’ 44. The penalty would have been stupid, but it wouldn’t necessarily have cost the Redskins the game.

While Morgan’s penalty was inexcusably stupid, he is currently the Redskins’ second-most efficient WR (Garcon is first). Morgan was targeted five times by RGIII; he finished with five receptions for 50 yards. Against New Orleans, Morgan was targeted twice with one reception. That means RGIII is currently completing 85.7% of the passes he targets Morgan with. Santana Moss, Leonard Hankerson, Aldrick Robinson, and Dezmon Briscoe all have a lower completion percentage. Morgan is a big piece of this offense and while he’s understandably being vilified for his gaffe at the end of the game, the Redskins are a better team when he’s on the field.

For what it’s worth I doubt he lets his emotions get the best of him like that again. Only a true fool wouldn’t learn from this and I give Morgan more credit than that. We’ve all been there at one point or another, except not on a stage that size, so while I’m disgusted I also realize that we’re dealing with young men playing an emotional and physical game. Sometimes they cross the line.

The team has made a large investment in Morgan and at some point we are going to need him to make a contribution to this offense. You probably can’t make him feel much worse than he does now. You can make him the scapegoat for a loss or use it to make him stronger by challenging him to make up for it on the field with his play. I’d choose the later.

Cheapshots happen - they've been happening since the NFL started. I'm not going to give Morgan the benefit of the doubt because he was getting picked on. Please.

Now that we have $6M invested in Morgan, no I wouldn't cut him.

But you can count me as one those that scratched my head on why Washington was so fast to sign a player who has been a backup with the 49ers and missed most of last season due to injury?

Coming off the layoff someone else was going to offer him guranteed money?

To me he was just not a value acquistion.

His move yesterday was reminiscient of when Michael Westbrook took off his helmet and threw after a similar play and cost the team at a critical time.

I hope Morgan is not a knucklehead like Westbrook.

We shall see.

Cundiff should thank Josh Morgan, had he not made that bone headed penalty he would have had to make an "in range" kick and if had missed that 47yarder this board would be calling for Cuniffs head instead of Morgans.

Danny Smith should also thank morgan, alot of heat that should be on him arround here is being consumed by the Morgan penalty. Two weeks in a row with bloks on special teams? Im no coach but it seems the NFL has this guy figured out, right up the gut twice for blocks. It cant be bad blocking can it?

Haslett should also thank Morgan, what kind of melt down would be going on here if we made the kick and in overtime the rams marched right down the field on us and kicked the field goal. I saw nothing in the second half that made me confident in hasletts D scheme, 21-3 comeback on us I mean come on.

I agree morgans penalty isnt what cost us the game, there were many contributing factors almost every hand was in that losing pot. However, getting exposed like that could be a good thing I suppose, IF the team addresses our failings and improves.

Too those saying a game 2 loss means a .500 season, good lord pull it together. Maybe your right and you can pat yourself on the back at the end of the season for seeing it comming, but have some faith and belief in your favorite team. Give them a chance before throwing in the towel.

There's no talking to you. Suggesting the Redskins should cut Morgan is just plan silly - and you know it.

I'm not allowed to have an opinion? There are many silly notions kicked around here, this is far from the first. But I'm the one who is impossible to talk to?

Sure, maybe I'm overreacting. Maybe cutting him is an overly drastic measure. BUT, I didn't just go with the boneheaded play, I gave two other examples of him failing in this game (running a 7-yard pattern on a 3rd & 9, running backwards on that play), and Henry's post pointed out a third error. Three HUMONGOUS errors on one play - running backwards, not getting out of bounds, and then throwing the ball at Finnegan...many are calling for Banks to be cut over a couple muffed punts that cost us no points in a game we won (myself included), yet these errors should be forgiven?

I am extremely frustrated. I am fed up. Fed up with these type of situations happening year after year. The Rams outplayed us. The Rams should NOT be outplaying us in year 3 of the "rebuild!" This team was 2-14 last year, including a loss to a pretty bad Redskins team. There is no excuse for this type of loss at this stage!

Lanky, we're not cutting him for a stupid play. Or even a bad game.

Also, the Rams may have been 2-14 last year but that was last year. We were 5-11 last year but some of us are acting like we are suddenly loaded with talent. We're not.

We're going to lose games like this. I'm not saying this based on this loss, but on the fact that we are very young and raw and still have holes. Fischer's a hell of a coach and exploited those holes like the very good coach he is.

I'm disappointed in the loss but calling for heads to roll at this point ... I think that's overreacting too.

No, we're not. And this is where we see what Mr Morgan is made off. Assuming he is alive this morning, he will see that fans are ready to have him cut at best, stoned at worst (not that kind of stoned, sit down TW and Sleepy). If he is a professional, he will rise to the challenge of showing us as fans that yes, he made a mistake, but he is worth hanging onto despite that because of everything else he brings to the table.

Alternatively, he could choose to fade slowly away into nothing, and be cut at the end of the season. Personally, I'm interested to see which route he chooses.
