Final 53 Man Roster for 2012

Not nearly as many times as he's brought it out of the end zone to the 10 or 15 or muffed it :)

On a playoff-contending team, maybe we can afford the roster spot. But we're not that team right now.
 
oh wow they cut white... thats surprising to me. i thought he was a young talent that everyone thought had a lot of potential

maybe he's on the practice squad.

i can't tell if i'm being a blind homer in thinking we let some young talented people walk simply because we didn't have room, or if i'm spot on in thinking that.
 
Yep. Amusing to go back to the offseason profiles where they gave Gettis and Morris virtually no chance to make a roster that finished 5-11 in 2011.

One would have thought we were coming off a 14-2 season with pro bowlers at these spots.

There's always room for improvement on a 5-11 team.
 
Well, there were some moves I kinda expected, but some others I don't think anyone expected. After predicting the final 53, I tried to adjust things in the original post but realize I confused it worse. Here is a look at the mistakes I made on the final 53.

I got the following players wrong...

Players I thought would make the team:

Tim Hightower - Coming out of the Colts game, I was surprised to see how well he played. I thought he was on his way to playing for us this season, was not aware of the status of his knee. I think he pushed the coaches for the chance to prove himself with Morris looking so good.

Chris Cooley - I had a suspicion he would not be on the final 53, perhaps a trade...I did not expect us to simply release him. I thought Shanahan would get creative with him, especially with the status of FB Young uncertain if we couldn't get something for him in a trade.

Willie Smith - Again, I was unaware of the seriousness of his injury, I thought it was a knee strain. I expect him to be given another chance if his knee heals.

Darion Scott - At first I had only 5 DL on the team, but I realized that wasn't enough. I liked the effort from the rookie Johnson and I really didn't think Golston was going to make the team this year. I thought Scott had the best chance. I look forward to seeing Johnson on the PS.

Kevin Barnes - I know he was not good enough in the slot, but expected to see him used on the edge more. I guess coaches didn't like what they saw. I know I saw him get burnt this pre-season. We'll have a starting OL with the 6th round pick we get for him next year. :laugh: Kudos to the FO for getting something for nothing.

David Jones - I really thought they'd keep at least 5 CB's...nope only 4.

Rackers/Gano Who'da thunk Billy Cundiff?


Players I thought would either be gone or PS material:

Jordan Bernstine - I thought he was PS material. Hope he can shine.

Brandon Banks - :wall: No!!!!!!!!!! His 1 special play compared to 12 average to 6 bad plays do not make a player we should have kept on the team!

Jordan Black - When I found out that Willie Smith was as injured as he was, I expected this move. All the talk about Compton leading up to pre-season, was just that...talk. I hope we can develop him on the practice squad, but his inability to break into the NFL and Willie Smith's injury made this choice possible.

Kedrick Golston - Hard to believe he has made it this long with us. He is a high character, hard working player. I really thought he'd be cut especially since he got injured early in pre-season.

Tanard Jackson - &*^%ing IDIOT! I thought it was a 4 game suspension for his indiscretions...
 
Compton was not going to come in here and earn an NFL spot right away. He played in non-major conference against second tier competition. He may be a practice squad candidate but evidently didn't get a promise from the team they are going to resign him.

I did not expect Compton to be a starter, but I had hoped we would not need to bring a journeyman in to become backup.
 
The only journeyman we brought in that made the team was Jordan Black and he has experience in this offense. So, that is on Shanahan to have made the right move.

But teams with limited picks and no cap space like Washington HAVE to look for vets that can possibly come in and provide a bridge.

Recall that with the $18M in cap space there is no question the Redskins could have signed players from the Carl Nicks, Eric Winston group.

And if they had you would have been really excited about this OL heading into 2012.
 
Yep. We got screwed - bigtime. Nothing to do about it. I just hope that the line we've put together can over-achieve and at least protect Griffin well enough to keep him on the field, and provide us some room for the RBs to contribute. We do that, we'll be okay until we can really get some talent on the OL.
 
I think you're making a mountain out of a mole hill here BT! We agree, I don't know how you get the idea I thought Compton was going to start at LT or RT or even that I am not fully aware of the team being hamstrung in the Free Agency period this year. All I said was I didn't expect a journeyman to come in and make the backup tackle position this year. If Jordan Black is the best we can do...great! I hope he succeeds when thrust into the position.

I still think the starting lineup, which resembles the OL that started to play well toward the end of last year, is serviceable this year until we can address the RT position...in the draft or FA next year.
 
Well, I don't want to speak for BT but I know we've both commented on the unusual level of near hysteria here (sparked particularly by the Cooley and Gano cuts) of late. He may be reacting (as I have some) to that as much as anything :)

One thing I've been thinking about related to our final 53...

I have no idea what kind of team identity we're going to have. With our shedding most of the vestiges of the Gibbs and Zorn teams over the past couple of years, and with a brand new franchise QB, and so many new faces, I have zero feel for what kind of team we are turning into.

It's not a bad thing - God knows we needed to turn into something different. It's just a little unsettling having NO idea who or what this team is really going to be. Anyone else having that vibe?
 
No, I didn't think that YOU believed Compton would be a major player here in 2012. Like you I thought he was a practice squad candidate.

But there were those that look at a #6 pick and wonder how we could have 'wasted' a draft choice like this on a player that couldn't stick on the final roster.

I remember his draft bio where his limited experience against top competition had him down in that #7 round to FA range.

And from the stats what is it a 10% chance a #7 pick makes it in the NFL?

It is ironic to me that when Zorn and Vinny left a LOT of fans were simply praying for a GM and Head Coach that brought in mostly younger players and shied away from giving big contracts to fat heads and under-performing vets who set a poor example for the younger players.

I think Allen and Shanahan have done that. But in retrospect many of those same fans are looking back now and saying 'why didn't we sign or trade for VJAX' or 'why didn't we make a move to bring back Jason Campbell, etc.'.

I think the ship has been prevented from sinking (ie where we were in 2010 when Shanahan came aboard).

Now, we need to start getting boilers going and get under way.

Does anyone think that is not happening?

I have no concern about Compton. We've done a great job overall with our picks - hard to argue otherwise when all but a handful have made the roster. I worry about the McRib pick - as a very early 3rd round pick, I am not convinced he's an NFL starter. Time will tell - but THAT's the pick I worry about.
