WEx: Sources: Gruden atop Snyder's wish

well, whatever happens it's hard to believe we still have 11 games left to watch Zorn, Campbell and Co. attempt to score 20 points in a 60 minute game

reminds of that movie about the prisoners on Devil's Island who ended up competing to see which one could kill more mosquitos to punctuate the boredom.

this team is as boring as watching paint dry.

no big plays on offense. a defense that while years ahead of the offense, seems just functional. nothing special, though.

hard to market this kind of product except to those of us that already bought the package

the Raiders were an old team that fell apart immediately after their surprising SB run in 2002.

this is the team that had 37 year old Rich Gannon and a gaggle of geezers that were looking for a ring, Jerry Rice at age 38 included.

in the end result, the Raiders as a program were not built to be successful in even the intermediate term.

to use them as a basis for evaluating Gruden only makes the point that he is probably not the coach to hire for a rebuild with younger players.

While Danny and Vinny are hugely at fault, I still contend that Zorn and Blache have no clue how to use players' talents to their advantage. Both are so stubborn with their schemes that they are determined to take square players and force them into a round scheme instead of developing a square scheme.

Blache, like Gregg Williams before him, is old school in this type of thinking. Zorn doesn't know any better because he's never had to do it any other way. I'm not advocating Chucky but he knows how to use what he has. He can find players to adapt to his scheme (when he has an owner willing to pay for them) but he can also use his players' strengths and develop his scheme around it. Does it always work? No. Talent evaluation plays a huge part in finding guys that fit the scheme. Coaching plays a huge part in using a player's strength to tweak your scheme. This is where Snyderatto and Zorn can't seem to some to a happy medium.

Chucky's schtick may wear thin with veteran players but if he has younger guys at key positions, things just might work out. They probably won't work if Danny and Vinny have total control and Chucky doesn't at least have as much input as Gibbs did.

If the early reports say Gruden, it probably isn't him. It's never the first name that gets floated out.

Where the hell is that little Chucky looking bastard? I told him to be here BEFORE the game!!!!!!!!!!!

Somebody get me a fresh towel!

Zorn's coaching decisions have frankly been questionable this whole season. I'm not saying that the offensive line isn't an issue. I am not absolving the FO of any blame for the talent on the field. But neither will I blame the FO for some seriously bone headed play calls that I think most of the guys on this board are smart enough not to try, especially given the talent on the field. Zorn should know better.

You can also make the argument that Snyder couldn't find anyone else, so prematurely promoted Zorn to HC. He probably should have been the OC for a year or two first, which was the plan at first. When Snyder realized he couldn't find anyone who wanted the job with their coordinators already picked out (Holy cow - you mean coaches want to pick out their OWN staff? LOLOL), he just made Zorn the HC.

So yeah, some of Zorn's decisions have been bad...but he's got a QB who can't throw a fade or hold onto the ball, an absolutely porous OL, and a runningback with two broken wheels...its like the lesser of three evils at the goalline.

2008 was a year in which the 'soft' underbelly of the Snyder Redskins empire was laid bare.

there were no simple solutions at HC as no big names were readily available.

so, the team in order to find a good HC candidate needed to KNOW the NFL very well and be able to identify that younger assistant that could grow into the role.

Baltimore did that successfully with John Harbaugh.

The Redskins not surprisingly were totally thrown into confusion and ended up hiring as HC a career position coach in Jim Zorn who was already 54 years old, and who had been tapped as an OC just weeks before.

Then with Zorn on board the Redskins went into the 2008 draft and proceeded to have one of the worst drafts in team history.

Not one of the top 4 picks has shown any evidence they are going to be productive NFLers.

So, in retrospect 2008 can be looked at as a watershed.

It was the year in which Snyder and Cerrato were clearly in charge and made decisions without the presence of a HC like Joe Gibbs or a DC like Gregg Williams.

And the results show how little they in fact know about how to run a franchise.

I disagree here - I think Malcolm Kelly is going to have a very nice career as a #2 or #3 wideout somewhere else. 7-900 yards and 5-8 TDs a year.

Agreed LL. Actually, I don't think it's inconceivable that all or most of the receivers from that draft might end up having decent, if not spectacular careers. However, at this point they've had a backup QB passing to them with an in over his head OC and what many of us suspect is a substandard position coach. I don't think Jerry Rice or Art Monk could overcome those kinds of handicaps. So right now we know two things about all of them, diddly and squat.

As I've said earlier, I'd really like to see what a guy like Gruden or Shanahan thinks about their skill/talent level after they've had a year in his system with his coaches and his handpicked QB. At that point, we'll actually be able to either write them off for good or pencil them in as future contributors.

But I heard Shanahan and Cerrato were good buddies? Doesn't make sense that his one demand would be for Cerrato to be fired. I could see Shanny demanding total-control of personnel decisions, but is that any better than Cerrato? This is the man who drafted Maurice Clarrett in the 3rd round.

Yep. This was from yesterday from the Post

Gruden was expected to be among the high-profile candidates Redskins owner Daniel Snyder would pursue should he decide to replace Coach Jim Zorn, who is under contract to coach next season.

Mike Holmgren, another supposed candidate, during a recent radio interview made critical comments about the Redskins' treatment of Zorn, one of Holmgren's former assistants with the Seattle Seahawks. Former Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan reportedly is more interested in other potential openings and Bill Cowher, another Super Bowl-winning former coach, also is expected to have numerous options if he decides to return to coaching in 2010 or beyond. Cowher is most often mentioned in connection with the Carolina job, should that open

Gruden - Out
Holmgren - Pissed off how the danny handled Zorn
Cowher - Will probably end up in Carolina

That leaves Shanny as the only "BIG" name left. The "Getting rid of Vinny" clause is enough for me to support this move

I want GDubb back. I think he would come back too - he loves the area, is familiar with a lot of the players, and his family is still here.

I think the chance of this is about zero. Snyder would have to swallow hard to go crawling back to Greg after both he and V stated that it would not have been a good fit and all of the drama from two years back.

Let's throw something else into the mix: What happens when/if the Cowboys miss the playoff this season? Who will they go after to replace colonel sanders? Jason Garret? I kinda doubt that, not with all of the big names who will be available. Cowher would be an unlikely fit. Gruden says he's happy in the booth. That only leaves Shanny and Holmgren of the guys who we KNOW will be interested in a new HC job next season.

If we go for a big name it would follow the pattern but I'm not convinced it's the right way to go. GM first, then a HC.

That main attraction is the coach. And not just any coach. Snyder was forced into a no-name once with Zorn. It can’t happen a second time. Nor can Snyder try a college coach again thanks to the Steve Spurrier debacle.

I have to disagree with this somewhat. Thinking that you can't pick a no-name or college coach because of previous failures is a problem. This indicates that Snyder's concern is only fan reaction and artificially limits his choices. He should not worry about that. He should replace Vinny with a competent NFL person (GM or whatever title they prefer) and let them pick the coach. It should be whoever they see fit, regardless of past issues with no-name or college coaches (as they say in the mutual fund business - Past performance is not indicative of future success). If they make the right choice, and the team begins winning, the fans won't care that they were a no-name or college coach, they'll applaud the decision.

Word is Shanahan has his eyes on another job. Wonder what Danny will do if loses out on all these guys.

Hopefully he goes for a hot-young coordinator, like the younger Ryan from Cleveland. Their defense looked pretty nasty last night.

I saw someone mention Russ Grimm and that made me wonder if he would go for him. It would obviously please the core of the fanbase but would Russ stand up to Danny or would he be so desperate for a HC job that he does whatever he is told?

and how would the players react to him?

No clue, but haven't they interviewed Russ before? Seems like that would be Danny admitting he made a mistake again, and won't happen.
