ESPN football analyst Todd McShay released a mock draft Wednesday that has the Indianapolis Colts picking -- surprise, surprise -- Andrew Luck with the top overall pick.

As if the Colts weren't already committed to drafting Luck, McShay said that the Stanford product solidified his draft position with a recent show for scouts:

An outstanding pro day workout, which confirmed Luck's ability to make all the throws and quieted questions about his arm strength, has cemented his status as the top overall prospect and the best choice for the Colts as they begin the post-Peyton Manning era.

McShay projects Robert Griffin III to go second overall to the Washington Redskins (a pick that previously belonged to St. Louis), while he thinks the Minnesota Vikings will take Matt Kalil, an offensive tackle from USC...

More of the "experts" predict Luck to the Colts than any other outcome. In fact, no one major yet has gone with Griffin in the top spot.

But I'm still paranoid.

1. Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

Andrew Luck didn't throw at the Combine, but his athleticism was terrific. He essentially posted the same 40, broad jump and vertical leap as Cam Newton. Many like to compare Luck to Peyton Manning because of the Indianapolis connection, but Luck is more like Aaron Rodgers - and he'll be extra dangerous on the Lucas Oil turf.

We know this pick will Luck. There won't be any drama like there was last year.

*** OTHER 2012 NFL DRAFT POSSIBILITIES: ***

1. None - A Yahoo! report recently said that Luck would be the pick, even if Robert Griffin "flew" at the Combine. I'm sure the Colts love Griffin, but Luck is the best quarterback prospect in at least 14 years.


2. Washington Redskins: Robert Griffin, QB, Baylor

The Redskins will be a playoff-caliber team over the next 10 years because of this trade. They did not give up too much. No way. Three first-round picks and a second-rounder is the correct price for a franchise quarterback - especially one whom you don't have to give $50 million guaranteed to right away.

This was also a great trade for the Rams. They'll be in great position to improve their roster over the next few years with all of their first-round selections. In fact, the only losers in this deal are the teams in the NFC East, who will now have to deal with a quarterback who looks like he could be the next Steve Young, and the Browns. I'll get to them later.

*** OTHER 2012 NFL DRAFT POSSIBILITIES: ***

1. None - The Redskins didn't trade up to No. 2 to take anyone but Young Griff. The Golden Company (a.k.a. Washington) will finally have a franchise quarterback (thanks to e-mailer Melissa B. for that great nickname suggestion).

Rick Gosselin, sports columnist for The Dallas Morning News and SportsDayDFW.com and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame selection committee, answered your questions in a chat Monday. Some excerpts:

If the draft was reversed and stars out of college could pick their NFL teams, where would you suggest Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin go?

Rick Gosselin: You'd like to say a New Orleans or Green Bay -- good teams, with great, quarterback-friendly offenses. But both of those teams already have quarterbacks, and I think both Luck and Griffin would want to play right away. I think the Redskins would be a very attractive landing spot for either one of them. The Redskins have a quarterback-friendly coach in Mike Shanahan who already wears Super Bowl rings from two franchises. He was the play caller for championship teams at San Francisco and Denver. I think Luck and Griffin would both feel they could reach their potential with Shanahan steering the course of their careers. I also think the Redskins aren't that far off. This is a team that beat the Super Bowl champions twice last season. The defense is playoff-ready with a couple pass rushers in tact and young playmakers emerged on offense last season in Fred Davis, Roy Helu, Leonard Hankerson and Evan Royster. If I was Luck or Griffin and could pick a team, it would be the Redskins. In the flip side of the coin, the Bengals are the franchise all the agents want to avoid.

Ryman - I will not argue with you that Luck is better than RG3 for the NFL. He may be, but he also may not. I have watched RG3 personally numerous times in game situations. The progress that he has made each of the three years that he played for Baylor is unprecedented. As great as I think he is at this point, he will still be a rookie. I hope Washington Redskin fans will give him some rope as he adjusts to the NFL. Payton Manning and Troy Aikman had a bad couple of years before they became the "franchise QB". I am getting to be an old man and I have seen a lot of players. I have never seen anyone quite like RG3. He now makes tremendous judgement on the fly, he has a knack to adjust his position under pressure to make the throw, his accuracy now is uncanny and I really don't believe there is anyone now or ever who can throw the long ball more accurately than him. He is a little quirky, but his leadership skills and charisma are also off the charts. Please make sure that he has enough rope at the beginning not to hang himself.

This is kinda fun.

The one thing no amount of film-studying can show us fans is what's between a guy's ears. At the elite level both Luck and RG3 are physically, what's in their heads (and hearts) is what is going to distinguish them over time.

I've already posted the Mariucci/RG3 interview that blew me away....here's one of the first I've had a chance to see with Luck's football brain under scrutiny.

Irsay only made his comments to fool around with the Redskins.

I guess with Polian now out in Indy, Irsay is stepping up to the plate to try and be the face of the franchise as Jones is in Dallas and Snyder tried to be here for a time.

It was you and your daddy that loaded up the trucks and moved the Colts in the dead of night from Baltimore. And then refused to change the name of the team and leave the tradition there.

That to me is a lot more heinous than Snyder and Jones accelerating a bonus for a player in an uncapped year.

But then again this is the NFL where nothing has to make sense.

This a clip from Gruden's QB Camp with Luck (well d'uh, Neo). You can see the whole thing tomorrow night, Friday March 30th on ESPN at 7pm Eastern.

The episode with Robert Griffin III will air on Monday, April 2nd on ESPN at 9pm Eastern.

There will be 4 or 5 other QBs with episodes as well but they will all be show on ESPNU. Tells you something about Luck and Griffin don't it?
 
Yeah, last year all young studs from Locker to Caepernick were featured with Gruden on ESPN not ESPNU, even Mallette who went into the 3rd round. I would still like to see how Weeden fares during his chat with Coach.

At times Robert Griffin III seems to good to be true. He's talented; he's smart; he's a great worker; he's charismatic. The kid sounds, well, perfect.

"At times I would concur with you," said Terry Shea, a former NFL quarterbacks coach and college head coach who spent nine weeks training Griffin this offseason. "After you’ve been with somebody for a while you say I’ll see how he reacts when he’s around another element of people. Well, he’s the same guy. He’s so engaging and he embraces people like he does you can’t help but say I’ll follow this guy forever if you’re one of his teammates."

Shea knows what a quarterback must do to play in the NFL. Though he spent the bulk of his career coaching in college, starting in 1968 at Oregon, he worked for four different NFL teams as a quarterbacks coach from 2001-08. Now he gets them ready for the draft.

In the past three years Shea has tutored Sam Bradford, Matthew Stafford, Blaine Gabbert and Josh Freeman -- all first-round picks. So he has an idea of what works. And he says Griffin compares favorably to Bradford (in terms of accuracy) and Stafford (quick release/velocity).

But, in my Friday email report, Shea said there were two things that stood out to him about Griffin.

"No. 1 is the way he brings such an upbeat demeanor to every time he steps on the practice field. It’s infectious," Shea said. "And No. 2 is the fact that he’s such an explosive athlete he can do just about anything you ask him to do, whether it’s setting that back foot to throw or [throwing] on the run."

Shea also discussed Griffin's work ethic, concerns over his durability and what they worked on during their time together. Hint: he's a big fan.

And it seems Griffin knows where he'll be headed. Really, it's not much of a secret at this point.

"I think he’s really excited to be a Washington Redskin," Shea said. "I know Robert would look forward to being [first overall] and I know his goal when we first met was to be the No. 1 draft pick. If anyone deserves it he does. But in this case maybe it’s not meant to happen."

That's interesting, OM. Not sure I am crazy about McShay's comparisons with Matt Ryan. I think Ryan is a very good QB, but for the price we paid for RGIII, we need better than that, imo.

On the other hand, Kiper's praise in comparing him to Elway was effusive enough to keep me interested. :)

I will watch tonight and again on Monday when it's Griffin on with Gruden but I will be watching in spite of Gruden, not because of him.

And while I agree that Gruden has become a caricature of himself, this clip is annoying because Jon can't make the point and then get off it. He has to keep driving it while putzing around with that coaches clicker and what's worse is that some damn producer who should know better didn't leave half this on the cutting room floor like they should have.
 
Yep. People will tune in hoping to get a feel for how Luck, then Griffin, handle themselves in a serious professional football-related environment, and instead will be treated to this reality-show-like stupidity. Mariucci did a FAR far better job in the short segment we've seen with him interviewing RG3.
