The Peyton Manning discussion

2006 was Campbell's first year as a starter.

Drew Brees had not played great in San Diego and was coming off surgery for a serious shoulder injury. Only Miami and the Saints were interested.

Brees would not have performed as well here as he did with the Saints. We didn't have the compatible scheme and the supporting cast he has had in New Orleans.
We also didn't have Sean Peyton.

I think the owner has been really vocal about his devotion to Peyton Manning. Basically saying as long as he is healthy he will be a Colt.

It sucks to say this but I am starting to believe that both Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck will be in Indie next year.
This may be wishful thinking on my part, but the way I'm reading this is that ownership is devoted to making another run with Manning and the Polians dug in their heels in wanting to draft Luck or RG3.

I think I agree with you. Adam Schefter talks about how many first round picks you could get for the #1 overall pick this year. I think the Colts are going to want more picks sooner rather than later to get one more shot at a Superbowl.

Now the real question is, will Shanny morgage the future for Andrew Luck? I say, "no".

the reason Irsay got rid of Bill Polian and his son is that in that 2-14 season he saw exactly HOW much Peyton Manning was carrying that organization and how LITTLE the front office had done in the draft to provide talent in recent years to support him.

the Colts OL is in shambles. the runners are average. Reggie Wayne is 32 years old.

on defense the secondary is terrible. the front seven has never added another impact player to go along with Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis who were brought to the team by Tony Dungy YEARS ago.

This team was not going to the playoffs with or without Peyton Manning.

I saw the press conference with Irsay. This guy sounds like a real clown, Dan Snyder does not have to worry about being a laughing stock. Irsay is an attention hog and he is going to ruin the Colts. In one breath he inferred he needed to tear it all up and start over but was non-comittal when asked about firing Caldwell.

Well...which one is it? I think Caldwell will be gone, but it also makes one wonder about Peyton.

I really don't think it's a good idea for the Colts to keep Manning AND draft Luck. Irsay may be a clown but if he's serious about rebuilding, he needs to dump Peyton, draft Luck and go from there. Otherwise, you keep Manning (AND Caldwell), trade that #1 pick and surround Peyton with a good O-Line and weapons and improve the secondary. That would probably give them a legit playoff shot for a couple years but it's hard to say beyond that.

I really hope Peyton retires.

He's been throwing El, I don't think he will. He wants desperately to come back, and I think Jimbo nailed what will happen. Some team is going to have to give up a Ricky Williams deal for Luck, which will set Manning up for the playoffs for 3-4 more years.

The Colts would be absolutely foolish to think that they can put together enough pieces fast enough for Peyton to regain glory in Indy. They have more holes than we do. They will almost assuredly go forward with Luck and cut their losses with Peyton. There is no way they will be able to tie up somewhere in the range of 50 million on 2 QB's.

However it works out, this is a story that will be with us for the next 60 days and it's a big one. The Colts have until the first week of March to make their decision with Peyton. That's when his first installment is due.

I don’t know E….the Colts are not that far off from being at least a playoff team with a healthy Manning. I’ve never seen a team built so completely around one player’s skillet.

This years’ record is deceptive. The offense is a lot better with Manning running the show, that’s a given, but the defense is better too. Scoring a lot of points makes the opposing offense one dimensional. The Colts were built to get after the QB.

If they draft Luck and keep Manning on the team you lose out on the bounty of draft picks you get by moving one or the other. They are also on the hook to Peyton for 28 million. Problem for the Colts is I think it will be a lot harder to move Manning than it would be to trade out of the top spot.

Manning is a known commodity (if healthy of course) but you would have to build an offense around him and be willing to let him run it his way, or else why bother bringing him it at all? You’d also have to find a team willing to give up draft picks AND pay him a heck of a lot of money. That’s a tall order and I don’t know if they could get value for that. As good as he’s been over the years I wouldn’t want to see us go down this path. Are there many teams who would?

If the Colts are of the mind that they’re going to draft Luck then they should probably just let Manning walk and completely clean house. Just don’t look for them in the playoffs next year.

how can the Colts afford both QBs? rookie cap or not...it would be a HUGE amount of money invested in two players. Peyton has already suggested that if he comes back...he is not interested in any QB competition or stepping down.

HF, I think the team as a whole was not a playoff team this year with him and I do not think they are a playoff team next year with him. They are in shambles.

I think we agree there is absolutely no way the Colts can keep both. But the Colts are not going to be able to trade Peyton unless they sign him to a smaller contract then trade him. At the beginning of March he is due all that money, if they cannot somehow get him to take a pay cut, they will be stuck either letting him go for nothing before he is due his check or they go with him and trade their 1st pick. There is just no way they can tie up that much money on 2 QB's. Who knows? Maybe Irsay will. I have seen stranger things in the NFL.

I think if we see Peyton on the roster on Draft Day, we see someone else trading up to #1.

Again, I hope he retires. This injury is not one to play with in such a violent sport. Their offensive line was decimated by injury this year, the secondary is abysmal, their LB's are not really good, their running game is not good either. Peyton was good at making those around him look good, but he hasn't been on the field in over a year and this is not the same Colts he once led.

You misunderstood me. My point was that (hopefully) the difference of opinion was the reason the Polians got the sack. In other words, I think the Polians wanted to dump Manning and draft Luck and ole Gas-n-Go Irsay told them to hit the road.

So, the Polians are available ??

Should we ???

:)

I'm assuming this was a sarcastic post, but allow me to emphatically say N-O! Go look at their drafting record over the last 5 years, it ain't pretty, particularly in the first round. Peyton has made that team look better than it is. Our draft last year alone was better than several of their recent drafts combined.

I'm curious, Yusuf, why do you think that? From what I've read, the opposite is more likely to be correct. Manning and Polian were exceptionally close. I saw an interview Peyton gave yesterday noting his shock at the firings, and with him remembering Bill Polian was one of the last guests to leave his wedding. I think it may be more likely that the Polians didn't want to move on, but Irsay does.

EDIT: Alternatively, it could also be completely unrelated to the Manning/Luck situation. Irsay could be looking at the performance of the team without Manning, and the Polians draft history and decided he wanted to go in a different direction.

This is pretty much my take on why Irsay dumped the Polians=the gradual decline in the support system for Peyton that was glaringly revealed in his absence.
