The collective meltdown over this has amazed me.

Many of the most credible reporters said all along that Johnson was NOT a lock for Washington (Including Kiem whose word is close to gospel with me).

Coordinators make really good money these days and they do it without the stress of being the head coach. The Lions have reportedly NOT offered him more money to stay, so while a lot of folks are pointing at Schefter's intimation that Johnson wanted a big contract, money doesn't seem to have played a role here.

Staying on the subject of money, I'm not putting a lot of stock in the reports of Johnson's price tag either. Many of the reports are coming from the same folks who 2 days ago were reporting Johnson was a lock to land in Washington. My memory is bad (and getting worse as I get older) but it isn't that bad.

I'm not concerned about how "late" we are with the hire either. Yes, the Senior Bowl is this week and it would be nice to have our head coach there along with his chosen coordinators. But not having them there isn't the end of the world either. This team has a lot of holes and in many cases what we need are football players. Just good, sound, smart football players.

This is not a quick fix. Even with the draft capital we have this year, it will take more than this draft to pull our team up into contention. Getting the eventual hire right is, to me, more important than having the staff in place for this week's game.

If we waited until the Ravens and Lions were eliminated to hire a coach and we hire one of the coaches such as MacDonald then the wait will be worth it.

If, however, the team has waited all this time just to hire Dan Quinn or a Mike Vrabel then the question becomes why did we wait this long to get started on our journey for 2024?

Quinn would have had most of a staff already in place by now.

I don't see where Aaron Glenn or Anthony Weaver at this point are such outstanding candidates that we waited 3 weeks to be able to meet them and evaluate them vis a vis some of these other coaches.

I don't think we were 100% committed to Ben Johnson, but he DID factor into the decision to wait for at least one other round in the playoffs to conclude interviews.

No arguement, BD. I think Johnson and Macdonald both factored into the decision to wait this long.

And, if I'm honest, I'll be a little surprised if Macdonald isn't the guy now.

At this point it seems that no matter who they hire there won’t be any highly regarded coordinators left.

If it turns out to be something like Quinn and EB…oof.

There does seem to be a certain indecisiveness about Washington's process.

The organization has been great at limiting leaks and proceeding in their own way without much intel being gathered on their plans but the end result is there were 8 openings in the NFL 3 weeks ago and now there are only 2.

Washington could have hired Quinn 2 weeks ago. They could have hired Raheem Morris 2 weeks ago. They could have made a greater press to get MacDonald in the door before Seattle engaged him as aggressively as it has.

If we waited 3 plus weeks for the playoffs to be over to hire Aaron Glenn, whose defense was nothing special in Detroit, please count me as being shocked.

It's a bit disconcerting that Peters doesn't seem to have a pipeline into budding assistant coaches around the league to reach out and snag a guy without the fanfare of having to wait to interview one or two candidates this late in the process.

When Beathard hired Joe Gibbs in 1981 the reaction around the league was shock. Most NFL observers thought Gibbs was too young at 38 to run a team despite being the offensive coordinator for the most prolific offense in the league in San Diego.

Beathard had done his homework and got out in front of the process and evidently had a short list of assistants he was interested in and that list differed from the lists of some other GMs around the NFL.

So something I’ve been thinking about with this coaching search, I was waiting to see who was hired, but with only info coming out about who is not hired, I figured I’d share anyway. I think we may need to come to grips that this isn’t the attractive job we think it is. Yes, we are excited for a new owner and front office. We can see that this could be really good long term. But a new coach, especially a young, first time coach, knows he needs to win and win now. Look at all the coaches that were hot shot coordinators who were fired within a few years. Brandon Staley and Arthur Smith are the latest examples. A guy like Johnson may realize that this is a rebuild and it’s going to take some time to build a winner, and he may not want to do that. Other coaches may be in the same boat. Whoever is hired now may be the guy who goes through all the losing and rebuilding to see the next guy come in and put the finishing touches on to be a winner. I think that does play a factor in this, especially for a young, first time coach. That may be why the hot names everyone has expected haven’t already been hired.

The other factor in all this isn’t just a shrinking HC pool as you interview guys to death with a large committee, but the shrinking pool of available coordinator talent. That’s especially an issue if you plan to go with a 1st time HC.
