World Cup 2014

We can just respectfully disagree there :) Great sentiment, awful song. I do own a pickup truck though.

I'm gonna say this as nicely as I can:

If you need a stretcher to get off the field you should be immediately taken to a hospital and most likely surgery.

This shit is unreal and extremely dramatic

Fan, you have to come with something stronger than baseball. Is there physical contact that I'm not seeing which occurs in baseball? Aside from the rare occurrence of being hit hard by a pitch, is it even possible to get injured while playing baseball? Watch out for the hard tag?

The only sports with less contact, less action and bigger breaks between play might be golf and bowling. And attendance continues to decline.

McD...so...to turn the coin...having played baseball through HS level: there is strategy in play on every pitch: score, runners in position, outs, ball/strike count, pitcher strengths/batter strengths and history against one another, fielder positioning, shape of the field itself, bullpen strengths/weaknesses, DHs...and a dozen other things. there's a lot going on in baseball.

Football has timeouts, substitutions, etc., cuz at the strength, speed and size these folks play at....no one would survive were there no breaks. the variety of options on each play from defense to offense is much greater...so of course there is a break to call the play/defense. no one likes to discuss it...but aside from the tightly integrated team aspect of football which is characteristically American...the appeal of the game (and hatred in some quarters) also comes from its overt expression of physical dominance: mass, speed, power, force. another American legacy.

I'm not belittling the athletes who play soccer....or the joy some derive from playing it. I just find it less than interesting and boring from a scoring pov. it's not even a sport that requires utilization of all the body parts. there are differences for the same phenomena: in baseball...when there is no scoring...it may be because the pitcher is making history tossing a no-hitter. in soccer....what's the equivalent? a wonderful goalie? terrific defense? I confess I don't know.

The responses in this thread are appreciated. as a sidebar...I saw a reporter this morning on CNN commenting that soccer popularity roughly breaks out pro/con along Blue state/Red state lines - with the exception being in the African American community where it hasn't caught on. I discounted the thought as simply more political BS from the MSM....but it i interesting that its popularity is seen as tied to political currents in the country. don't get all bent up over this if you don't fit the profile...just relaying something I heard on TV.

in the silly department: what's more difficult.....executing a flip to execute a mid-air leg whip to score a goal in soccer...or hitting a Vida Blue fastball? what's more challenging a 30 yard score from the corner over the goalie's outstretched arms or a 70 yard touchdown pass with Lawrence Taylor in your face? which requires more physicality and courage?

re: the silly department- I'd take #1 on both. As to the question of physicality and courage, I fail to see how that applies.

we can disagree on the first...but it's highly subjective.

as for the second.....pointing out some obvious differences between the two sports. and how that might relate to why Americans prefer football to soccer. it's more than money.

in the event......I can see how some find soccer entertaining and a valued experience. doesn't work for me - but that's the beauty of individualism!!! i love golf and there are many who don't see golf even rating as a sport.

So...apparently playing FOR Neymar isn't as good as playing WITH Neymar. Just sayin'.

As an Albion Rovers loving Scottish football fan, I feel for the first time ever I could look a Brazilian football fan in the eyes this morning and say with all honesty

"I know how you feel"

If anyone is currently watching the World Cup, that play by the German Goalkeeper was why I loved playing that position!

In case you didn't see it, there was a ball in the air and he was able to crush the offensive player while punching the ball away!

DM...were you rooting for Argentina?

Yeah I guess you can thank me. I have this rivalry with some Mexican friends I met working in California... They are all Ronaldo fans so I root for Messi all the time just to piss them off. I know I know... Kind of Cowboy fan like but why root for Ronaldo if your from Mexico? Hahaha

I've had way too many discussions with folks about the excitement level of soccer, whether it will become America's "5th Sport".

I love soccer, have since I started playing it 40 years ago. Still play, coach, and watch enthusiastically. If you like to watch, great, grab a seat and we'll watch together. Don't "get it" or find it boring, then that's great too and enjoy whatever sport tickles your fancy. I've learned long ago that it isn't a zero-sum game. You can not like soccer and I can like it and we both can be happy.

I do regret that so many folks have the belief that our 'best and most athletic' don't play, so we can't catch up to the rest of the world. The US teams are almost always bigger, stronger, and more fit than their counter-parts. That doesn't translate to soccer at the highest levels. Yes, at U-10, the skill level can't usually overcome the 3 kids who are just way ahead of the rest physically. This difference is closed as all the kids grow up. At some point, the physical attributes serve only to help the technical abilities. If physical and athletic prowess was such an advantage, then the African teams wouldn't consistently lose early at international matches. Also, this idea that people like our best football and basketball players would somehow make great soccer players doesn't wash with the game. You can't be 6'8", weigh 250 lb, and be able to run for 90 minutes. Never going to happen.

The US didn't so so well this time mainly because the players' first touches are poor to crap, almost every time. If you can't keep the ball, even in tight spaces, then I don't care how fast you are, how strong you are, or how high you can jump. You will simply tire out at some point, just chasing the ball. The skill of being able to keep the ball, even for 1-2 minutes to settle the game down, allows one team to dictate how the game will be played. The US doesn't need bigger, stronger, faster players - they need BETTER players.

I think the US will catch up eventually...if this sport is taken seriously enough we will go in and take over like most other sports.

but the big IF is IF we take it seriously enough...is the next Pele on the playground right now?

Soccer is a staple for all kids in the US for playing sports. My dad got me in to it because it was very easy for little kids to play, you burn a lot of energy, and its a start for learning team sports. Soccer has always been and always will be a sport I respect. It's just hard to watch...even yesterday I said to Sian, "this is a great match. they are really having some great stops...but the lack of scoring is boring". And its true..that is where I think Americans are lost and lose interest.

I think while btfoom makes a great point about the quality of first touches and the generally poor passing skills of US players comparatively speaking, it's all relative. The quality of US play today is light years better than at any other time and it's only going to get better. The fact that the US can now contend and be a threat to win an international match against all but the truly elite teams - that's no little accomplishment.

That Kimberly Jung Ugh is fun to joke about and laugh at, especially at such times.

It looks like Robinho is now coming to Orlando City.

Kaka and Robinho? That team isn't messing around.
