WORLD CUP 2010

Here's my dilemma, I have been a fan of the Dutch since the days of Johann Cruyff. It would be nice to see them win it all. Hey, it would be nice to see Spain with it all. But, I feel the Germans are too strong going in.

Wow, there's a great name from the past, Cruyff.

I watched him as a boy for the Diplomats.

Back in the good ole Pele, New York Cosmos, Rodney Marsh with the Rowdies days.

Both the Dutch and Spain are famous for choking at the end. They are the sentimental favorites, for sure.

It would be nice to see either the Dutch or Spain win it just so there would be a new name on the Cup. Germany has taken it home before. With only 7 countries having won it all in the whole history of the event it has to be about the most exclusive club around. Be cool to add someone to it.

But I still think Germany is the team to beat.

When I was a 12 years old, my team played a game at RFK before a Diplomats game. The unfortunate thing was, we did not get the chance to meet any of the players, although I did participate in their camp outside of RFK the year before and met a few players. Johann was not one of them. Camp Git Your Kicks...LOL!!!

I remember going to one of Pele's last games ever, at RFK. It wasn't his last, but maybe his second-to-last, or third-to-last game before retirement.

With 3 minutes left on the clock, and the outcome still wide open, he threw his jersey down, and ran off the field as quickly as possible to avoid an enormous crowd.

Two Diplomat defenders ran over, picked up the jersey, and began fighting each other for it. And they weren't fighting friendly. The jersey ripped in half, and both of the Dips players split a piece of history.

Downtown Amsterdam last night. :)

Nice video Om. I would love to see that in this country. Well, maybe in four more years.

The Spanish defense is making me look smart so far, holding the Germans to only one shot in the first half. On the other side, the German defense has had Villa on lockdown pretty much all game. This game is gonna be 0-0 and decided on PKs, methinks.

Sure was a questionable non-call right there at the end of the first half where Ramos dropped Ozil. So far, this has been a pretty sedate match, almost like a friendly. Wondering when these two teams are going to crank it up.

This game is playing into the hands of the Spanish. The Germans are used to playing ahead and the Spanish just had a late game winning goal. Plus the Spanish just seem faster. Even though the Germans seem to maintain control, they can't seem to keep the pressure on.

The take down at the end of the half was a penalty. The ref could have called that just outside of the box at least.

Edit: This drives me crazy. Lallas just said the above mentioned take down in the box was negligible. Negligible or not, it is still a foul! It negated the opportunity for a one-on-one scoring opportunity! Negligible or not, there was contact from behind and it is a foul!

Spain's putting a lot of pressure on the Germans now-their passing is simply gorgeous to watch.

That header for the goal by Puyol is a highlight reel-damn, what a beautiful score that was. Germany's got their work cut out for them alright-and little time left.

Well, it looks like I was flat out wrong! The Germans were simply outplayed by a better team! Looks like those of you who would like to see a 1st time World Champion will get your wish.

Congratulations to the Dutch and the Spanish!

Not only are we going to have a first time WC champion-the matchup looks to be excellent as well. Ought to be a fun watch (with apologies to fansince62, of course :)).

Not just a first time winner of the World Cup but a first win for a European team OFF European soil. Tough to believe that has not happened before now.

I called both semi-final games exactly wrong :) Hate it when that happens. Props to the Spaniards, I seriously didn't think they could do what they did today. I think Spain-Netherlands is going to be extremely evenly matched and should be a great final. That neither have ever won the thing should make it even more exciting.

I picked the Dutch over Uruguay. I thought Uruguay was an overachiever anyway. Still makes me think we should have seen the U.S. in the semis.

As for today, Spain proved to be a lot better than I figured against the Germans. There is no doubt the Spanish were the better team. Today's match was a great one to watch to see great soccer.

You guys are talking as if the Germans have already beaten the Spanish. Don't count them out just yet - they are the best defense the Germans have seen, and have a premiere striker in David Villas. I think its gonna be Spain/Netherlands in the final.

Ha!

I do think the Spanish are going to prevail today. Just a hunch, as I'm not a huge soccer fan or anything - but the Spanish are an excellent side. We shall see - as they say, "that's why they play the game."

*cough* *cough* *cough*

Yes yes, Lanky prevails. This proves that the NFL Pick 'Em was a fluke, I should have won! ;)

Little late in the game for a World Cup Pick "em, but it would have been fun. Here's to a World Cup Pick "Em in 2014!

As far as picking Spain, you were just going against the grain. It was you rebel spirit. You know you liked Germany in that game!:insane:

15 minutes to the match I really thought the US team had a shot at playing following the results of the Group stage.

Go Germany!
