Will we sign Josh Norman?

Wow, did you guys see close Norman was, to remaining a Panther ?
The team must really be kicking themselves, when they found out he was ready to sign the offer.

But when Norman was “blindsided” last Wednesday by the news the Panthers were pulling the tag, he contacted team officials saying he was finally ready to sign it, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.
But it was too late: The Panthers’ front office had already notified the league it was rescinding the tag.

So, how does everyone think this went down? Scot called Danny and Bruce and said, "Hey, we need this guy!" or Bruce and Danny called Scot and said, "Hey, we can afford this guy...do you want him?"

History would say the latter. Scot's team building approach from the draft would also point to the latter.

Hey, Norman may work out, but up until this point, I'd say Scot had been enforcing his build-from-within philosophy, but has gone over to the dark side. Too many shiny things in Danny's world. It's hard.

he has never said he would never grab a big free agent. He signed Nate Clements. Look at the free agents that Ron wolf brought into GB he operates in a similar way won't chase the first day dollars and overpay. But don't let your hatred of Snyder let facts get in your way

Futile. I knew it.

No matter who's in charge,no matter any evidence that directly contradicts your incessant bleatings, it never sways or changes your opinion.

We get it. You hate every move this club makes no matter what. As long as Snyder is the owner, nothing the team does will ever be any good.

I've said it before,I'll say it one last time: I liked you better when you stuck to badgering Cowboys fans.

Nowadays, you're nothing more than a Redskins troll.

Que Sera Sera.....

McCloughan said Norman was first player in NFL history to be named All-pro and then become free agent next offseason.

@MikeJonesWaPo

Fat Albert was named All-Pro in both 2007 and 2008 then was signed as a free agent by the Skins.

Is there an owner in the league that wouldn't have been involved?

Snyder has shown that he is a skilled closer. It would be stupid not to have him do so when the decision is made to pounce.

I think the similarities end there. Haynesworth was ALWAYS known as a guy with character and work ethic issues. Norman never has been unless you call his on field behavior a character flaw. He's been a hard worker and well behaved guy off the field his entire life by all accounts. I think the Haynesworth analogy (especially when used by outside critics of this team who don't pay attention much) is intellectually lazy. The likelihood that Norman skates the way Haynesworth did and is a locker room stink bomb the way AH was is quite low. I get why people are nervous, I am too but it's really not a back breaking deal when broken down and this team so desperately needs top flite help in the secondary that the risk is worth it IMO.

I disagree with tr1 but you guys are being pretty tough on him. Chris - I've been saying that same thing for years. This fan idea that owners should have zero say or influence in mega million dollar decisions has always struck me as naive. That being said I am confident it is McCloughan making the final calls.

Wonder how the split to Norm's 'co-agent' thing works out, does the new guy get more?

As far as the influence Snyder had on the deal, it's a pretty safe bet he signed off on it sometime during the process .
See no reason to suspect he did anything other than offer timely resources to get it done when Scot decided to go for it.

If this FO has it's shit together football wise the combination of Scot picking targets, Bruce/Schaffer structuring contracts and Snyder's willingness to see it through should make for a formidable combination regardless of how the players become Redskins.

Dont get me wrong. I have zero belief that the two signings are analogous at all. I love the Norman signing. I was simply pointing out that while our GM may be excellent at his craft his knowledge of history, at least in this instance, is lacking. :)

If anyone takes the time to watch Scot's pre-draft presser from yesterday, you know who's running the show.

Maybe true or also maybe true is the notion that he is aware, had nothing to do with those moves, doesn't care about the past and is going to make the best decisions he can as they become available to him. This Norman signing was a VERY rare thing, in fact I can't remember it ever happening before. It wasn't a character cut, it was a financial move. Like I said, I get the nervousness from our fan base, we've earned the right to it, but that doesn't make it relevant or applicable to SM personally.

Every organization I've ever known or been associated with knows that the guy with the money runs the show.

It's no different for the Skins.

Remember, the Danny will fire Scot some day.

A tiger can't change his stripes.

But, getting back to the football angle, without a sustained pass rush, the $75 million man could look naked. I'd have rather spent the money or some picks on the d-line.

Carolina is good because their o-line and d-lines are damned good. Norman was the icing.

Who says we aren't going to spend picks on the DL. Signing Norman doesn't have any effect on our draft picks. We still have the same amount of picks and according to Scot, just because we signed Norman doesn't mean anything for the draft.

Sure we could have spent money on the DL, but who? Knighton? Tried to bring him back and he went elsewhere. I don't recall many top of the line DL out there this year in FA.

'the guy with the money runs the show'
........ of course he does. What ever led to the belief that we all didn't know that.

If Scot screws the pooch doing his job in running the football side then yeah 'Da Danny' will fire him just like any other owner would fire for failed performance by an employee.

All that is being said is that 'Da Danny' is letting Scot do his job and by all appearances Scot is pretty damn good at it so there is no reason think that 'Da Danny' is just waiting make the impetuous move and take over the job.

Going into the third season with the coach, going into the second season with the GM, where are we at?
Any evidence of progress or not? Let's judge by results not by methodology.

That and the reverse is true - an awesome secondary is going to elevate DL play. The performance of the two units are linked and are impossible to separate.

perhaps its the fact that he is antagonistic regardless of how people talk to him. or the fact he cant stop calling him "the danny" which shows he just wants to talk shit.

I guess I would prefer we confront each other with facts (or what we believe are the facts) instead of name-calling (troll for example).

I don't agree with tr1 but I can't really blame any fan for being skeptical. That being said, people, even greedy cut-throat owners, can learn from their mistakes. I don't buy the idea that Snyder is incapable of being more hands-off.

While tr1 is asking for links, I'd love to see his source/evidence that Snyder is calling the personnel shots. I won't hold my breath though.

I agree. It should be better than that.

Except for Henry. We all know Henry isn't better than that.

You're nothing but a cotton-headed ninnymuggins!

Er ... anyhow, I agree that you guys are being a little tough on tr1. He's not actually being rude. He's just being stubborn as hell. :)

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twic... er, 1M times, shame on me.

I am hoping the Scot is in charge, but history says Danny just can't help himself. I think he has enough self awareness to know the fans despise that about him so he goes to great pains to hide his involvement, but I have to believe he is still involved.

And I don't blame Tr1 one bit for saying it. The man has earned all doubt and scorn that he gets.

Oy vey. All I was referring to was this:

@MikeJonesWaPo

And he was wrong. That makes it relevant and applicable to him personally.
