Will we sign Josh Norman?

The only reason Gallette was available was because the Saints didn't want his off the field problems. Which he has not been a problem for us. If he returns to form he will be inline for a nice payday next offseason

........ it's not hard to see where current players stand. They aren't worried about the salary cap, they aren't scared about his age — all they see is an elite talent that's available, and they want that talent to be in Burgundy and Gold in 2016.

Redskins players make it clear they would love adding Norman | CSN Mid-Atlantic

I suppose 'confidence' is a key part of success, if this signing helps bring it to a higher level amongst the D then it's a good start.

Scot hasn't finished putting together the pieces for the upcoming season, Norman is a significant (albeit pricey) piece but it should allow Scot more lateral movement in the draft to beef up things elsewhere with youngin's.

I've never seen the infatuation with firing a coach after A bump in the road then rinse then repeat 3 years later
sometimes you need patience foresight is always best even if Scott sees us as 7-9 you make this move this year as we continue to get better. Next season is when we should make a deep run into the playoffs if everything pans out but if it pans out earlier we could do it this season

I don't think you bring the highest paid CB in the league to make a deep playoff run in two years. I think you bring that guy in with the understanding that you are expecting a top 7 defense; given that our O was quite good last year, I think Scot is expecting a deep playoff run THIS season.

Is Gruden up to the job? Personally, I have my doubts. But I will grant that he improved immensely in between his first and second years, so yeah, it's possible. My fear is that we hit the perfect storm last year and this coming year should have been viewed as a reset of expectations. Norman being signed tosses that out the window, imo.

if you don't pick them up now chances are you won't have them very rarely hit the market unless you have a cash strapped team. If we can pull 3 -4 solid starters out of this draft then we very could possibly make a deep run this year depends on how Quickly they develop.

If Norman comes here and is untouchable, AND we go to the NFC Championship game, I think the move will be a success. But I don't think we're that close. I was anticipating a step back back this year, but this move means we just went all in. I'm not sure we're ready for that, but I guess we'll find out before too long.

Comparing Gallette and Norman's deals is absurd, one is a bargain, the other just made Norman the top paid CB in the league. There is no comparison.

And so is setting the bar for deeming the Norman pickup a success going to the NFC Championship :) I sort of agree with you, in regards to last season representing major overachievement while other NFC East teams imploded. But that could easily happen again - keep that in mind.

And just because you say a team can't build a SB team through draft and lower level FA signings alone doesn't mean it's true. Remind me of the huge FA deals NE has put out there to make someone the highest paid player at his position. The one time the Seahawks did it with Percy Harvin, it was a disaster.

Lots of teams bring in a top free agent in an offseason. You guys act like we're the first to do it. It's not like McLovin has been doing this left and right - it's the first really big FA acquisition of his tenure in DC. And I think those wringing their hands over it are going to get pretty quiet pretty quick when they see what he does for our defense almost immediately.

History says (and not just history at Redskins Park, I'm talking over the whole NFL) that you are better off not taking another team's trash and counting on them being the missing piece to put you in the SB. History says you're better off drafting and developing; and when you factor in the track record this coaching staff has of being able to adapt their gameplans to the players they have available, the picture gets even muddier, imo.

We are drafting. We didn't give up draft picks for this guy, we gave up cash, cash the team feels we have and that is worth spending on this guy. 'Other team's trash'??? Are you serious? I don't know what the Panther's issue was with Norman, but just like Philly I suspect they are going to regret this move for a number of years. Could he be a problem child? Sure, I guess so. But 'trash'? That's a ridiculous descriptor to use.

Again, just because you say it can't be done through the draft doesn't mean it can't. The risk is a lot lower and the reward is a lot higher, which is why the smart teams stick to drafting.

Lord knows, I hope to hell this works out perfectly for us, but I see some red flags.

Sucker's choice. No team goes all draft or all free agent. None. Every team utilizes both avenues to improve their roster. We just improved the hell out of our defense. I really don't get the anxiety.

I'm not a buyer of the argument against big FA signings by using NE as the comparison, for two reasons:

Tom and Brady.

Brady is obviously a game changer who makes every player on that side of the ball better. Norman may just have a similar affect on the defense here. That will be interesting to watch, as will Carolina's success without him there.

We don't know how good Kirk Cousins is going to be.

Perhaps McCloughan and Gruden think he is going to be an upper echelon QB and the Redskins on offense are ready to roll. The #28 defense is the problem and this offseason and draft is about fixing the defense.

i meant if culliver comes back to form breeland will most likely be the third cornerback. If he doesn't he is still a solid to slightly above average second

I don't understand this post? Breeland may be the most promising young CB in the league right now... He's not Carlos Rogers, but he might be the next Darrel Green...

It's not that hard if culliver returns to form he will cover the 2nd reciever in nickle packages breeland will cover a lesser reciever big advantage redskins
If culliver doesn't return to form and breeland covers the second reciever it's still big advantage redskins

Sorry brother - but I don't see it - Breeland is a star waiting to explode. Culliver (if he gets healthy) is good, not special. Breeland is a #1 on many teams right now...

Boone, I don't disagree with most of what you posted. I just keep reading here and elsewhere that this is a home run, slam dunk no brainer. I see some potential problems and think it's possible we regret this.

My point with trash is just that CAR didn't want him after going to the Super Bowl and that should give anyone pause. He wasn't a salary cap cut, we actually don't know why he was cut. And to my mind, that is an indicator of risk.

I'm not sure why there is consternation with pointing out red flags.

Lost in all of the talk of Culliver and Breeland as a result of the mega-signing is the young, raw talent in Dunbar. It was the play of that kid down the stretch that helped this team win games. I agree with Boone, Breeland is our #2 CB, but I wouldn't sleep on Dunbar...the way he performed gives me reason to think the edges of our secondary are set for at least the next 3 years...with or without Culliver hitting the field. I guess that makes the Norman signing even that much easier to swallow.

No - you're wrong. The Redskins know why Carolina didn't want him. Trust me - they do :) That they don't feel the need to put it on their Facebook page, that I understand.

The 'trash' comment was and is utterly ridiculous. Sorry - but it is.

Risk is in the eye of the beholder. You know what I view as risky? Releasing a top 5 cornerback over 1-2 million per year in salary. I'm not sure I agree that picking up said top 5 cornerback is any more 'risky' than any other player acquisition. All free agent pickups are risky. All draft picks are risky. You know what mitigates the risk of those decisions? The skill and intelligence of those making the decisions.

Im not saying he isn't if culliver is healthy he will cover the number 2 reciever if he struggle breeland will quickly replace him it's not that hard. Culliver was supposed to cover the number 1 last year till his injury. They will give Culliver a chance. You guys act like I'm calling breeland a scrub.

No - that's not what I'm saying. But last year was last year. I can't imagine Culliver being ahead of Breeland on anyone's NFL depth chart right now. Not going to happen.

Sorry Boone. I'll try to get in line better. Didn't mean to be ridiculous.

Or you could defend calling a top 5 CB another team's 'trash'.

I'm not stupid - nor are you. I 100% agree that there's no guarantee every move is a stroke of genius. I'm just trying to figure out why one would hyperventilate over this one? It was an expensive pickup - that's a valid concern (although I'm guessing the team has figured out how to mitigate that).

But ultimately, you either trust McCloughan is able to make good decisions, or you don't. I find it ironic that the McLovineers are panicking over picking up a top 5 cornerback. It's no more risky than sitting an inept RG3 was. It's a solid move imho.

How is pointing out concerns hyperventilating? And the Panthers didn't want him, they threw him off their team. Not sure how that doesn't make him trash, by definition.

Scot has earned a lot of trust. But we've done all this before and it doesn't work. Shit, we've done this in the secondary before and it didn't work. Our coaching staff gets rid of players that don't fit, they don't adapt.

It's an expensive risk to take that Norman will fit.

But I'm not hyperventilating, I'm concerned. My apologies if that bothers you.

Because calling a top 5 CB 'trash' is impossible to defend Goal- it implies a foregone conclusion that, because Carolina released him, he must not have value or be fatally flawed. The Panther's released him - that's true. That doesn't diminish his talent level - come on man - you know that. We have a living, breathing example of that dynamic already on the roster.

I agree, the 'hyperventilating' comment was unfair. Sorry about that. You could dial back the snark you apply to anyone who's not as negative as you are too :)
