Why is Malcolm Kelley still on this team?

DS has it right. As long as they have a roster spot open, there is no reason to cut the man loose. The potential is still to high. The minute they are forced to make a roster-based hard decision, they will.

I said he was done last year. I stand by that. The body is just too fragile.

But I'm not in a hurry to cut him loose until we have to. I mean ... stuff happens.

Well, eventually they will have to, there just aren't enough roster spots.

In Murph's Homer McFanboy column he goes over the battle for the WR slots on the team. In his analysis the first slots go to Moss, Anthony and Gaffney with the backups being Hankerson and Paul. The last slot (assuming they carry 6) will be a battle between Banks, Austin and Stallworth. Nowhere in his discussion does he even mention Elijah Price, er, I mean Malcolm Kelly.

I would agree it's just a matter of time. When are the first cuts?

He's making a good case for himself, but I believe special teams could be his downfall. Of the 3 that were mentioned who could be fighting for the final spot at the WR spot, I think Austin has the best chance if he maintains his intensity during the pre-season. He had a quality game at receiver and a decent return.

Banks? Well, we've discussed his contributions on special teams and lack of contribution in the offense. Is his value as a return man, as risky as it is, worth the spot over someone like Austin who provides value at both spots?

And Stallworth? He has had a solid pre-season. I like what I have seen in person and on the field Friday night. But he does not play special teams.

You have to weigh the relative contributions. Austin can return kicks, sure, but at the same level of Banks? He's at an almost Hester-like level. He had 5 kicks returned for TDs last season (3 called back on "away from the play" penalties)!
The question that has to be asked is if Austin's offensive contributions will outweigh Bank's KR contributions, and vice-versa. I think the coaches can scheme Banks into the game well enough to make him effective.

Keep in mind, Stallworth has 19 receptions in the past 3 years. He's always been a potential guy (except one that can get on the field) and never quite lived up to it. I believe he needs to have a spectacular preseason to make the team.

seems like Banks is already fragile if he is missing this week with a "sore knee". Im sure the ol "If it was regular season I could go" will come out but Im not the kind of guy that likes that excuse.

The knee is a concern, but if you think about it, there is no reason to play him. They already know what he brings to the table, plenty of film. If the knee is swelling up, there's no reason to chance it by playing him in a meaningless game. Just my 2 cents though.

Are you kidding? Hester's best season was 6 KR/PR TDs in 2006, he had 5 in 2007, zero in 2008 and 2009, and 3 in 2010. Banks would have had 5 if his teammates didn't commit stupid penalties (at least one I recall was arguably not even a penalty). They are directly comparable in that stat (in a single-season comparison) - are you perchance suggesting Banks' electric returns are somehow less influential, or less meaningful than Hester's?

Eh, maybe I'm viewing Banks with burgundy-colored glasses, but at the very least he's the most electric returner we've seen SINCE Devin Hester. Where would YOU rank Banks on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being Antwaan Randle-El, and 10 being Devin Hester? You say he's not even "remotely" close to Hester, so would you put him at a 2 or 3? Just curious.

Frankly, as you are well aware, Banks is in danger of being cut for reasons aside from his football talents. If Banks had a quiet offseason, there would be zero doubt whether or not he makes this team. He's certainly the best Redskins returner since BMitch. Ask Lawrence Phillips about off-the-field stuff getting in the way of talent!

Eh, when the calls are away from the play as all three were for Banks, the return still shows his talent. Put it this way: Banks had 3 KRTDs called back due to penalty. Only two teams in the entire NFL had 3 KRTDs!

I would put him somewhere in the 7 or 8 range. I will not deny the kid is dynamic and very talented, but with his knee and questionable character, I don't care if he had Hankerson or Kelly talent I would pass in favor of a solid return man in Austin who can also make some contributions on offense. If Banks loses any of that burst, his worth is diminished drastically.

On what grading scale have you ever seen between 7-8 anything more than maybe a little above average? I did not say 8, I said between a 7 and 8.

And his explosiveness has suffered from the knee issues. He should have broken the long return from the end zone to the house last Friday and would have had he been up to the same speed as last year.

Lanky, the kid lost speed last year, and he is not as fast this year and in all likelihood he will continue to lose speed because he is just too small to last very long.

He's not the Super star you think he is. He is a major upgrade from Randle-El, but that is like saying he is an upgrade from you or I! He's exciting, but not what you think he is. Why wasn't he in the Pro-Bowl last year? Why wasn't he an all-pro?

The fact of the matter is that we're not a good enough team to have one roster spot dedicated solely to a KR. Am I correct in saying that he plays no other positions? I mean, I know he's a WR, but if he were soley competing for a slot in the WR rotation, he wouldn't make it. And with the new rules in place, you can pretty much start at the 35 every time.

Brandon Banks is not durable, we are seeing that with the knee injury that he has had now for the past 6 months.

With the rules changes and his lack of ability to play wide receiver, I think you seriously have to look at a guy like Terrence Austin who is healthy, can return kicks and has some ability and upside at WR.
