Who will be the 'breakout' player in 2026?

I think it means a surprisingly good season from someone who has yet to produce one. I don't think guys like Conerly or Kinlaw or Amos should even be in the discussion because they have been expected to play well and often have. We have so many guys with 'potential' (according to some). I have sort of come to hate that word - because honestly, any player who has enough native ability or talent to make an NFL roster has 'potential'. Another way to say 'potential' is 'has yet to produce', it's really just a more hopeful way of saying it.

But you can also use potential for talented players who are producing but look like they could produce even more. Sometimes their conditions prevent them from a huge statistical jump.

Take Tom Brady in 2001-2006. Won Superbowls, but wasn't a dominant producer. He suddenly got Wes Welker and Randy Moss and the narrative was, let's see how he produces with weapons more comparable to Peyton Manning. And boom, 2007 production was worlds different than before.

Steve Smith Sr was elite, but would he be in the Hall of Fame if his QB's weren't always below average? He had the potential for it to be sure.

My hope with Sainristil, is that conditions for him are better than ever. Pass rush, defensive scheme, and his set position as an outside corner all could allow him to produce at a higher level than the prior 2 years.

Likewise, maybe Jayden Daniels produces more than 2024 with a scheme that's far less rigid and takes the training wheels off. Daniels has clearly already arrived, but the conditions haven't been good for him to excel. He could still use more weapons, but Daniels has potential to produce more statistically than he has before.

Yeah, but JD had a ‘breakout’ rookie year. I understand what you are saying but ‘continuing to grow’ or having a ‘career year’ is different from breakout (which by my definition is achieving what you’ve never come close to previously). I included Sainristil because he has yet to prove he’s an NFL starter.

I agree that Mikey doesn't really feel like he fits that mold, because he had a great rookie campaign. I'd go Luke based on Boone's criteria

The only challenge Magee is going to have is how much is he going to play? If they do a lot of what they did in Minny, the Edges are going to take OLB spots, DTs will play the 3 down positions, and that leaves 2 LB positions, one of which is most likely Styles.

Chenal, Magee, Luvu are all going to be competing for snaps.

It’s going to be fascinating to see how they get snaps for all the LB/edge players.

I don’t disagree about Magee, if he can stay healthy, he could do really well. But he might have waited a year too long to develop and he might not see the field a lot unless he can beat out Luvu and Chenal.

What’s wild is we went from Ron not thinking there was no need to have LBs on the roster to having potentially more than we can play. And it’s so ironic Ron was a LB.

I agree to a great degree except with the ‘waited too long to develop’ part. There is no way that Quinn was going to reduce Wagner’s role. Just no way.

That's probably true except one of the reasons why he never saw the field at all was, if I am remembering correctly (and not confusing him with somebody else), he was constantly hurt.

I don't think he was even available to take over more from Wagner. Which slowed his development.
