I know who I'd like to see in the skins backfield again....Darrel mother effin Young! No reason he couldn't truck some fools for say 10 plays a game...if not more.

Will the ginger GM do it?

They let him walk but Chicago just cut him. IDK, I don't think they really know how to use a FB. A TE could probably cover what a FB can. But, wouldn't mind it - a boost on STs at least.

Bulldog's Twin
After waiving Paea and Riley and bringing in Jenkins who is 35, I see the Redskins signing a veteran back who can help take some heat off Matt Jones.
Kelley picked up some preseason yards but we have seen this before with guys like Royster and Marcus Mason who flash a bit but are not projected as starting backs in the league.

You think they might till after the first week so the contract isn't guaranteed?

Mack made a strong case for a roster spot the last two weeks. If he gets cut there's no way he clears waivers. I'm thinking we're keeping four RB's--Jones, Thompson, Kelly, Brown--and figuring what to do with Marshall when he comes off IR.

That would be my assumption too - although there's always the chance that the performance last night, however impressive by the two young guys, is viewed as a product of the weather conditions and the level of competition in a 4th preseason game.

Oh absolutely that's a possibility. Both of them have looked pretty steady all preseason though. For what it's worth.

They are talking about the RBs right now on 980. Cooley is suggesting that Jones has the starting nod only because he's a McLovin guy, and that based solely on performance (and talent level according to Cooley) Kelley should get the start. Cooley was surprised they didn't bring anyone else in to compete for the starting job, and assumed that was because McLovin really likes Jones for some reason. They are also debating whether or not Mack would clear waivers. They likened him to Seastrunk :) who looked awesome in the pre-season and then cleared waivers after his release.

They all agree that the top priorities for our backs this season will be pass protection and not fumbling.

Chris Thompson is the one that intrigues me the most. But that damned injury bug, tho...

When he got regular playing time last year, I thought he looked better than Jones or Morris. If he could stay healthy, which doesn't appear to be possible, I'd be interested in seeing what he could do.

Thompson is a good guy to have on the team. I don't know that I'd ever expect him to start. I do like what he contributes, in the role he's given.

I think by game 4 Kelley will be the #1 and Jones will drop to 2.
I was NEVER on the Marcus Mason or any other scrub preseason star bandwagon, but Kelley genuinely looks different. He hits the hole fast, has good vision, and makes yards after contact. Even more impressive, he looks very good in pass protection.
Marcus Mason was the weakest kind of 'tweener - too slow for a scatback but not powerful enough to run between the tackles. Another mancrush, Sultan McCullough, had all the speed in the world, but suffered from Skip Hicks level myopia and thus spent more time dancing then moving forward.
I don't see these weaknesses in Kelley, not even in week 3 when he faced the Bills first teamers. Kelley may not be Clinton Portis, but he is, I believe, on par with the best era of LaDell Betts, but better than Betts ever was at blitz pickups (which isn't saying all that much).

One of the things Cooley said this morning was that Kelley's blitz pickups were the best, by far, of the bunch.

Yeah, pass pro for young runners is key. As long as they show quick learning ability, they don't have to be perfect coming out of the gate. Preseason has only offered vanilla blitzes for the kids to practice on. Hopefully, Barry & Co are throwing some wild shit at them during practice, and Kelly's even better at it than we think.

I'm still not against bringing in a vet with a proven track record in pass pro.

Who knows, if we need to make room for such a guy, maybe one of the kids will develop some never before seen strain of a non fatal 3 month Martian flu that will land him on the IR/PUP list for safe keeping. ;)

He was up near 250 at times in college and played FB. Probably got to block quite a bit. He sets his feet extremely well and keeps his guy in front of him.

Damn! Hope he doesn't come down with a case of Lacyfattyitus.

The one thing I noticed about Kelley is he seems to have the vision/recognition skills that Jones lacks.

Jones often fails to take advantage of the holes the OL creates or 'forces' the play by running up the back of his linemen before they set up their blocks.

He also still runs in that upright style, which given Marion Barber's history in Dallas, would lead one to believe there may be more injuries to come.
