Who was the best free agent signing in Washington History

I don't want to Google either. Seems to me they used a 3rd supplemental pick on Ricky Sanders. However I don't remember how those supplemental draft picks worked.

It was so long ago and I was so young. I dunno. Maybe?
Jim Kelley was drafted by both the Houston Gamblers and the Buffalo Bills, but chose Houston. Did not arrive in Buffalo until the USFL went the way of the dodo bird.

On a side note: I attended the final Washington Federals game at RFK. Plus the final Skins game and the final DC United match.

I do remember Ricky played with Kelly in Houston and wanted to play in Buffalo with him.

I assume he thanks his personal God each night for not taking that path. ;)

Bobby Beathard played the folding of the USFL like a harp from hell, to borrow the line by Danny DeVito.

You get:

Gary Clark
Doug Williams
Ricky Sanders
Kelvin Bryant

That's pretty much the Redskins offensive skill players in 1986 and 1987, and for the receivers 1991 as well.

That's 2 Super Bowl wins and another trip to the NFC championship game.

Not bad.

If only we could have gotten Reggie White as well.

If we did we probably would have won another championship.

Kelvin Bryant was supposed to be like getting Hershel Walker but he turned out to be more like Joe Washington. He was the USFL league MVP and won 2 championships before joining the Redskins. I never understood why he never did much for the Redskins considering we didn't have a top RB at the time.

Injuries.

Bryant was a super talented guy, fast with good hands and decent size.

He just could never stay healthy and that's why Joe Gibbs ultimately used him more out of the backfield in the passing game, to get him in the open and away from the DL to the inside.

There is a forgotten moment in SB XXII. Williams twist his ankle and leaves the field. Schroeder comes in for him and throws the easiest pass in the world to an open Bryant who inexplicably fails to catch it. It bounces off him as if he has forgotten to put his hands on the ball. We have to punt. On our next possession, Williams is back and he, Ricky Sanders, Timmy Smith & Co initiate the slaughter.

I always wonder what would have happened if Bryant had caught it and sustained the drive.

For me it’s a tie

if you go with >2000, the answer is Fletcher. Then there is a gap. Then there are some others, most notably Garcon.

But the answer is Fletcher from 2000 onwards.

I’d have to really think about it for the 1990’s.

Pre 1990’s, Riggo is pretty clearly the front runner.

Correct. Santana was not a free agent. You could choose Lavernious Coles though. He had a helluva year before he decided he wanted to get paid more than play.

Santana is a candidate for best trade though :)
Best trade by and far was Sonny
