For so long by the midseason we turned our eyes towards the draft. This year, we get to look forward so I thought it might be fun to start a thread to ask who are the free agents we ought to re-sign. This past offseason, Peters signed a ton of free agents and most of them got one-year deals, a few got two-year deals. Well, that means that a lot of these contracts that helped propel us to this feel-good start to the season will be expiring. Normally, when we think free agency, we look to the outside. For the first time in a long time, I want to start by looking from within. Who are the guys who took on that prove-it contract and earned a second contract?

If after writing down your keepers you also want to speculate on some outsiders that's okay.

To make life easier, I copied this free agent list for us:

Offense

  • Marcus Mariota (QB) – UFA
  • Zach Ertz (TE) – UFA
  • Cornelius Lucas (LT) – UFA
  • Michael Deiter (G) – UFA
  • Samuel Cosmi (T) – UFA
  • Jamison Crowder (WR) – UFA
  • Olamide Zaccheaus (WR) – UFA

  • Jeremy McNicholas (RB) – UFA
  • J.C. Hassenauer (C) – UFA
  • John Bates (TE) – UFA
  • Davion Davis (WR) – RFA
  • Alex Taylor (T) – ERFA
  • Julian Good-Jones (G) – ERFA
  • Kazmeir Allen (WR) – ERFA
  • Brycen Tremayne (WR) – ERFA
  • Haggai Chisom Ndubuisi (T) – ERFA

Defense

  • Bobby Wagner (ILB) – UFA
  • Jeremy Chinn (S) – UFA
  • Clelin Ferrell (DE) – UFA
  • Jamin Davis (LB) – UFA
  • Dante Fowler Jr. (DE) – UFA
  • Michael Davis (CB) – UFA
  • Noah Igbinoghene (CB) – UFA
  • James Pierre (CB) – UFA
  • Benjamin St-Juste (CB) – UFA
  • Efe Obada (DE) – UFA
  • Mykal Walker (OLB) – UFA
  • Taylor Stallworth (DT) – UFA
  • Anthony Pittman (LB) – UFA
  • Darrick Forrest (S) – UFA
  • Tariq Castro-Fields (CB) – RFA
  • Keandre Jones (LB) – ERFA
  • Jalen Harris (DE) – ERFA
  • Benning Potoa’e (DE) – ERFA
  • Nick Whiteside (CB) – ERFA

Special Teams

  • Tress Way (P) – UFA

Going off the list above, I'd start with

Cosmi (starter money 3-4 years) Deal Done :)
Lucas (backup money 2 years)
Ertz (1-3 years)
Mariotta (maybe)
Noah Brown (backup money/low starter money)

Bobby Wagner (starter money 1-2 years)
Jeremy Chin (starter money 3-5 years)
Fowler (backup money 1-3 years)
Igbinoghene (backup money maybe)
St. Juste (dependent on if he can prove himself a solid #2. I also would be fine seeking an upgrade)

Tress Way (Maybe. But I actually want to see competition. He's getting a bit old.)

Hey burgold - not sure where you got this list but Cosmi signed a new contract back in the summer for 4 years and $74M. He won't be a FA in the spring.

Chinn, Fowler, and Wagner are sign before they hit free agency. Even if Wagner loses a step, his knowledge, experience and leadership are invaluable, especially if they bring in his replacement behind him.

Fowler I think will want to stay, he signed here for Quinn and Whitt. He’s been awesome. Chinn was all over the field against the Giants.

I’d like Mariota back for consistency there.

Also, are we going to lose any coaches? That’s something we haven’t had to worry about in a while.

The coaching free agency question is a good one, Riggo44.

Kingsbury is the obvious question. I think (hope) that he is enjoying playcalling and OCing so much that the pastures out there aren't greener. He said once that he has enough money so fulfillment is the big issue for him. That and I think the hunger to prove himself. The latter could mean he'll want to finish the job here or it could mean he wants to show the NFL, the world, and himself that he can do the head coaching thing.

Still, there's a ton to say about finding a job you love, are good at, and staying. Moving up is not always moving forward.

Neophyte I thought Cosmi had signed  I got the list from BetMGM and assumed a betting website would be more accurate than my memory.

I wasn’t worried so much about Kingsbury, at least for now, as I was Brian Johnson. I think he gets overlooked here. Whitt also will be a candidate in a few years too.

Oh, and definitely want Noah Brown back.

Bet MGM is letting me down!!!

There are no rules/regulations that I know of right now saying that we can't pay our OC and DC a lot of $$$ to stay here and be the highest paid in the NFL. Hopefully, we can convince them to for another 2-3 years by doing so, so a foundation can be laid for this team and organization.

Might get some slack for this but I'm a BSJ apologist. dude is not a #1 corner playing the position. we've seen players improve in just one season with these coaches. I believe with the addition of lattimore and bsj moving back to cb2 and mikey moving back inside, we could see bsj improve. he has the talent and physical tools. just stop gettin all handsy. bring back noah and mariota for continuity although i think with jayden you could plug in anybody and he will bring their level of play up. bring back chinn and fowler

I don't dislike BSJ either--I think he's an average #2 CB. He's had his moments, both good and bad, against some of the best receivers in the league. He's gotten some really ticky-tacky DPIs (the one against Nabers this past week was really weak). He's gotten burned too, badly. I am okay if they bring him back--but it wouldn't hurt to upgrade there either.

i wouldn't be surprised if we take a corner in 1st or 2nd round next year with some more LBs

Although I don’t hate BSJ as potentially a #2, I do think they can do better.
That's how I feel about Dyami Brown. I feel like he's finally being used right and slightly contributing, but I still think he hasn't shown enough to earn that second contract. I am happy for him that he finally has a stat sheet and made some plays though

Dyami Brown: 11 rec 148 yrds, 1 TD
Jahan Dotson: 7 rec 71 yrds, 0 TD
3rd round pick we have yet to draft: 0 rec 0 yrd 0 TD.

My guess…

Pretty sure we re-sign:
Wagner and Ertz - 1 year deals
Chinn and Bates - 3 year deals
Fowler - 2 year deal?
Way - 2 year deal (but we bring in competition)

Maybe/Probably?:
Lucas - 1 year deal
Noah Brown - 2 year deal?
Mariota - 1 year deal
McNichols and Igbinoghene - 1 year deal?

I have no idea, but quite possibly:
Dyami and Zaccheus
Ferrell
BSJ

Tender:
Julian Good-Jones
Tremayne
One of the back end tackles - Ndubuisi/Taylor
Probably a couple others?

And then probably a handful/bunch of back end guys return (maybe Deiter, Kaz Allen, Whiteside or TCF, etc).

All told, the contracts will add up, but we should still have substantial cap space left (and we’ll see what happens with Jon Allen’s contract).

I think BSJ is a 2nd tier guy who's been forced to face top tier talent. I suspect in addition to Lattimore, one of our early picks in the 2025 draft is a book end for him, and BSJ if re-signed is a depth/relief guy. Probably he's gone is my best guess.

I think we should keep Daniel's around. IDK? :ROFLMAO:
