That's the only reason I can fathom for this whole fishing thing. Was talking with one of my fishing buddies from college and we were just laughing our asses off at his comments.

Well your friend apparently doesn't fish either. I live next to a charter boat captain. He's been running a boat out of Rudee Inlet for 27 years. When I showed him your comments, he just shook his head and said the know-it-alls like you are his worst customers, because they don't realize what a load of bs their antiquated ideas are.

I suck at fishing. I can do charter fishing, I can also do hand fishing that was fun in Belize even if those locals were shady... I can also do drive around on the boat drinking beer trying to fish fishing.

If it's not one of those then I suck at fishing.

I did catch a fish hand fishing in belize using a soda bottle as the reel. Was very interesting... at one point in time I thought my wife and I were going to be kidnapped and murdered, but they turned out to be very nice locals!

Now crabbing... there isn't a person here that knows more about catching, cooking, and eating crabs than me.

My buddy took me crabbing a couple times. He uses a trotline - its a lot of fun snapping up the crabs with the net; not so much fun tying turkey necks to the line. :\

EDIT: I am not arguing. I am definitely not a crabbing expert. Oh, except eating them - I can do that with the best of them.

Thank god. That's the only way to crab. Throwing out pots and coming back hours later is slackers work.

Your problem was using turkey necks. Use bull lips. They last forever. It is a pain setting them up though.

Well, seeing as how I now live in Texas and he lives in VA, it will probably be a long time before I go out again. Bull lips? Like, literally lips from a male cow? LOL

Crabbing with pots isn't crabbing, that's lady stuff.

You know what works great for catching crabs? Rotten fish. It's amazing how much their natural diet attracts them It's a bitch to work with though.........that smell..........vomit.

I had to look up bull lips, that was a new one for me.

While I am not expert, I did spend a summer on the Chesapeake pulling pots. It's hard work when you're pulling them up by hand! 300 a day!

I never said it isn't work. I've worked a crab boat, I didn't enjoy it. Neither did my shoulders. I was making a joke, because I don't know of anyone who says hey kids, let's go crabbing, then goes and throws out some pots. I guess I should have said lame instead of the lady reference

Well, yeah, pulling 300 a day as a job is not the same as throwing 3 in and coming back in a few hours. That's a job.

Chicken legs tied to nylon on one end and the post of a dock off the other. My brother and i could catch two deozen per day easily.

I would be sent to my grand parents for weeks during the summer and I'd do that all day ever day (too young to go out on the boat by myself). So much fun... I'd use those pyramid traps to get them. I even named one of them because it was humongous, he was my pet for the day.

Then we cooked him and ate him.

It's because they like whatever the end result mixture is of salt water and freshwater combining in the area, so they hang out there.
Crabs are very sensitive to that. If it rains really hard for a long period of time the crabbing sucks for a few days because all the freshwater mixing in with the bay sends them into deep water to get away from the fresh water. So I would guess that spot a good mix of the two that the crabs like

This is a very specific trip though, and only in the bay. Once in the ocean, anything goes. But, I realized this might be where the confusion started, since Ex is from that region. So maybe your sole experience with boat fishing has been with Rockfish? I'm not sure. Anyway, maybe that's where the confusion came in. There are, however, many fishing charters available in the VA Beach area that advertise the different types of fish you may catch, but those are all the offshore trips.

My sole experience? Not hardly. I practically live on the water in good weather, and I've never gone fishing for Stripers on a boat. Ever. Almost every single one I've ever caught was off the first island pier in the lower bay. The only one I ever caught off a boat was cast netting for baitfish

As far as the boats advertising the types of fish you can catch.....it's called advertising. Charter captains are as honest as used car salesmen. No offense to our used car salesmen here And because of the variables and different seasons, do you really think a charter captain is going to individually list all the seasons and conditions where you can catch each type of fish?

For the record, I've stated repeatedly that I'm not a fishing expert, never claimed to be. But there are some basic fallacies being pushed in this thread, that my internet-arguing soul cannot allow to pass freely.
