I'd rather have both any day of the week and keep Kerrakpo intact, but would let 'Rak walk as a UFA next year rather than lose Kerrigan.

I'd prefer we pay what it costs to keep kerrigan. Whatever that cost is.
 
I'd pick up the 5th year at that price. We still don't know if Rak will be hear a year from now, and the loss of both could set us back 5 years. Work Rak's contract in the off season if the team wants him, and worry about Ryan and Robert the following off season.

I've seen it attributed to so many... lol. Still works, tho. And not that I'm disparaging Kerrigan, just that he's a known quantity. A quality quantity, at that!

It sounded pretty good to me. Maybe top of the value curve for him, but as I've said about other 'Skins, worth more to us than other teams.

I had a little revelation about the amount of scratch we're throwing at Rak this year, too. Maybe we're willing to let so much go 'cause we're paying 1) for continutiy under the new coarch and 2) to show him after a year that he's not actually worth that much (unless, of course, he balls like an all-pro) and we pick him up longer term for scratch after matching low-ball offers.

Not fully fleshed out, but it's a thought.
 
I'm curious what, if any, this will change orakpos view on his situation.

Pretty clear message if kerrigan gets extended long term and he gets franchised

I think the odds of Ryan getting a long term deal at this point are pretty slim. If we don't pick up the option, then we could have to sign both of our starting OLB's next off season, and it will be very costly. The safe move from a financial and talent standpoint is to secure him for the next two seasons at a low cost.

Orakpo and Kerrigan have a lot to prove in 2014.

Both of these guys believe they are elite talents, but to this point they have been inconsistent.

Sometimes dominant, sometimes disappearing. In Orakpo's case, sometimes hurt.

The smart move for the Redskins is to see what happens in 2014 and make a reasonable decision based on who projects to being the franchise player for this team on defense.

I don't have a problem with having them both or of only bringing back one if that one separates himself to be really special.

When I think of the best OLB in the NFL neither player to this point is in the top echelon.

Again, they are solid performers. But laying top 5 money on both of them to me seems untenable given the cap.

We can't do at OLB what we did at WR where we now have two fairly large contracts to manage.

Recall that Trent Williams, RGIII and others will need new contracts as well.
 
They could bite on the option - not in the Redskins favor though if they are going to try to negotiate a long term deal. Might be a little tough to talk him down to $4M or $5M @ year with a longer contract after you just gave him a one year deal for $7M. Better to try and get something long term done and they still have the option to tag him later for the fifth year if it looks warranted.

Look, if they can't work out something long term (and there is plenty of time to do so) the exercised option could be more like a franchise tag in advance. The player already knows what your giving him for one year - the team just handed over their bargining position. Without it, a little more motivation to get 'er done on both sides. Maybe he'll be deserving of $7M or more - maybe a little less. There is year to play with that.

Here's a link @ OverTheCap.com that shows Rookie options picked up. JJ Watt, Robert Quinn - sure. Those guys would be a pretty safe bet to get over $7M on the open market in their fifth year.

Anyway, take a glance at that list. It's pretty easy to see the line between the 'no-brainers' & 'let's think this over' as far as exercised options go.

Have they been working on a Long Term Deal w/ Ryan that I haven't heard of? 'Cause the option has to be signed by like next week.

My personal opinion is 'do it' because he's always on the field. AND if he does ball-out next season, you have a tradeable asset.
 
Looks like they're exercising the 5th year option on Kerrigan. Good choice, but I hope they can retain both. RK seems like a complimentary player to me; he needs an Orakpo on the other side to be at his full effectiveness. IMO.
